On February 18 Roman Varenytsya went to the Maidan for the first time. He hadn’t told his parents anything about his plans. Just as he was getting on a bus, he called his mother and broke the news.
“It was like a bolt out of the blue. He didn’t take any warm clothes, nor any food,—recalls Roman’s mother Hanna Ivanivna, — I implored him to stay, or at least to put it off till later. His father begged him to wait a bit. But he wouldn’t listen.”
