Prologue
Beep beep!
The sound of an alarm clock woke a girl up. Her eyes, though half squinting, tried their best to see clearly, then turned the alarm off. She slowly sat down on her bed, rubbing her eyes, trying to get the boogies out. Not trying to waste any more time, she quickly hopped from her bed and went into the shower to get ready.
"I cannot offer to flop on the first day of high school," she mumbled whilst picking out her outfit. After thinking for what seemed like five minutes, she finally picked a grey cargo pants and paired them with a simple white shirt. Hurrily, she puts a little make-up on, just to cover some spots on her face and make her look a little bit more...alive. She then brushes out her insane bed hair from her good sleep last night.
"Eva! Breakfast ready!" Her mom called from downstairs.
"Coming!"
Eva grabbed her backpack and went down the stairs to get something in her stomach. Her parents had already waited in the dining room, apparently. It's a family tradition. They would have breakfast together on every Eva's first day of school. Not that they won't do it every day, but usually her parents would be a bit more emotional.
"Hi dad," she said as she kissed her dad's right cheek, who was currently reading news on his phone.
"Morning, sweetheart. Excited about school, are you?"
Eva smiled while sitting down, "a little bit?"
Her mom brings their breakfast to the dining table and kisses Eva on the cheek. "I can't believe you are a high schooler now! I don't know how to feel."
"Mary, calm down. Your daughter is not getting married yet!" Eva's dad, Alan, tried to calm his wife down, who was tearing up right now. He then grabbed a piece of tissue and gave it to her.
Mary took it, dabbing her inner eye corner. "Oh, I know! I'm just emotional looking at how grown she has become."
"Mom! Are you really crying?!" Eva stopped spooning her food into her mouth and paid attention to her mom.
Mary, feeling ashamed, shook her head while sheepishly smiling.
Eva gets closer to Mary's face then lets out a little giggle. She can't believe that her mom cried about her going to high school. "Oh mom, come on. It's just high school!"
"You tell her, Eve," said Alan, pointing at his half-smiling-half-teary-eyed wife.
Mary then dabbed her eyes again, "okay you guys, stop laughing at me. Go finish your breakfast! You guys don't want to be late, right?"
That morning, their house was filled with laughter and excitement. A lot of chattering was happening, mainly from Mary and Alan, who gave their daughter some tips on surviving high school life. But Eva's head went somewhere else! She's thinking about how exciting life's going to be for her. She's basically almost an adult. And her future? Oh my! So many new things to see and to learn about.
After breakfast, Eva's parents decided to take some pictures together. Her mom then kissed both her daughter and her husband goodbye as they drove away. "Have fun today at school, lil Eve," she whispered before entering the house.
Thankfully, Eva's school isn't that far away, only about 15 minutes of driving and she has arrived to Northwood High School. Stepping from her dad's car, she smells the fresh air as they blow her hair. Her face was full of excitement and glee.
"Bye dad!" She squeaked.
Alan waved his daughter goodbye then drove off to his office.
Full of confidence, Eva walked down the corridor, smiling at some of her past classmates. A new beginning, she thought to herself.
"Eve!" Someone had called for her.
Eva quickly looked around, searching for the voice source, only to find out that it was her best friend, Rosie. She ran to her and gave a big hug.
"Eve, you are killing me with this hug."
Eva just laughed. "I'm so sorry, Rose! I missed you so much!! How have you been?"
"I missed you too. I'm doing fine, but i have lots to talk about today."
"This is exciting," Eva smirked.
Rosie giggled, "it sure is! But we should go to bio class right now. We wouldn't want to miss first period on our first day, right?!"
"Oh, please. Race you to the class then?"
Eva sprinted, without looking back. Thankfully, she had already read the class announcement yesterday, so she knows exactly where her class is going to be. Meanwhile, Rosie is still standing. Shocked to see how cunning her best friend is. Motivated, she quickly joins her for the race. Going second doesn't mean she's going to be in second place.
Arriving at her classroom, the girls ran out of breath. They both walk staggerly to their seats. Placing their bags down, they quickly sit with their heaving breaths.
"You.. outwin.. me.. Rose. How..?"
Rosie chuckled. "I.. played.. in-" she stopped, gasping for air before continuing, "more sports than you. Don't underestimate me!"
"Alright fine. You win! Hooray!"
"Oh come on, that sounds insincere, Eve." Rosie rolled her eyes.
"What?? No! I'm being serious. Congrats, Rosie." She smiled at her friend. "So, what are the things you want to tell me?"
Rosie's face softened and turned into a thinking face. "Hmm, well i-"
"Alright, good morning class."
Both Rosie and Eva stood upright almost immediately. "Morning, miss."
"I'm Miss Beth, your bio teacher for this term. I hope we can all get along nicely with each other, and please, if any of you have questions, feel free to ask me. In this term, we will study-"
Suddenly, Miss Beth's voice slowly disappeared inside of Eva's head. All those thoughts are now filled with her high school scenario.
Of course, this year will be perfect too, as it all been before.
