CHAPTER 5 “Good evening ma'am,” I greeted Angela while walking into the house. She rather ignored me and walked away, leaving the door open. I shrugged, thinking she was in a terrible mood. Walking into the house, I noticed that something was off. For some reason, the atmosphere seemed thick and I wondered what had happened here. Looking around for Rebecca, I spotted her sitting on the sofa. “Justin! When did you arrive?” I asked jovially. “A few hours ago,” he replied cockily. What was happening? The cold treatment from the family couldn't be ignored. I knew how they all behaved around me, what was the sudden change. Justin was like a brother to me. We talked about issues disturbing us and we were closer than he was to Rebecca. I had expected him to call me and tell me that he was around. That was how he usually does but I guessed something wasn't right. “Why are you here?” Rebecca asked, finally saying something. Her voice came out coarse like she had been crying just before I walked in. I tried to think if today was her father’s death remembrance but it wasn't. What the hell could have made her cry? Maybe she wasn't really crying, maybe something else happened. Her eyes were red and puffy and it proved me wrong. Something definitely happened here, I tried to think of what could have happened but couldn't find a reasonable answer. The way she had asked the question was in a harsh tone, it felt like she didn't want to see me here. “It was late and I hadn't seen you, I decided to come over,” I replied uncomfortably. I turned my gaze and met Justin glaring at me. What the hell did I do? I tried to think of something but I was stuck! This was a new development and it scared me to the brim. Whatever I had done, at least they should have discussed it with me. I was getting scared by these attitudes. I couldn't afford to lose another family again, I would be left alone! They had filled a gap in my empty heart after my family left without even looking back. “Or did they find out about my real identity?” I thought alarmed. Even if they did, at least they should ask me something or say something to me. “Is there any problem?” I decided to finally ask. Angela scoffed before walking into her room, totally ignoring me. Justin also left but not before squeezing his sister's hands. “Can we leave now?” I asked her after we had stayed quiet for a while. She didn't want to leave, I could see how reluctant she was to do that, she looked like she wanted to stay far away from me. “Let's leave,” she replied and we got up and left the house. All through our ride back home I couldn't stop thinking about what could have gone wrong. My instincts were right, I knew something was going wrong when her mother asked to see her. I had been so bothered that I had to come here myself. Usually, her mother invited the both of us. I also could see the uncertainty in Becca’s eyes when she came over to my office earlier today. She seemed nervous and I had noticed that. We walked into the house without bickering or talking as we always do. Rebecca strolled into the room, totally ignoring me. I couldn't help but worry, what gravity of offense could I have committed to receive such a response? I knew I wasn't cheating, the only thing that made me worried was my family. “Or should I tell her?” I contemplated. I walked into the room and met her on her phone. “Becca, what happened at your mom's place?” I asked her, hoping that she was going to say something. I didn't like that she was saying anything at all, the silent treatment was killing me and I couldn't take it anymore. After waiting for a while and she still didn't respond, I pressed on further. I would never allow us to sleep without sorting out our differences. It was what made our relationship this strong after years had passed. “Can you say something? I am very worried.” I added feeling very hurt. “Just leave me alone!” she shrieked. I couldn't believe this, I hadn't seen this side of Rebecca even once. She was always calm-headed and would rather walk away. I sat down on the other side of the bed, deep in thought and totally concerned. Why did all of this have to happen now? Why was God trying to soil my happiness? Just as I was still deep in thoughts, I felt an arm tug me. “I need this bag, it just costs 500 dollars,” Rebecca said. “Can you get it for me?” she asked with a smile. I was happy that she was finally speaking to me but I couldn't afford what she had just shown me. At this point, I wished to be wealthy. She deserved something more expensive than the bag but I just couldn't afford it. “You know I can't afford that, babes,” I said, feeling slightly embarrassed. Her mood immediately changed before she dropped her phone back. “I knew you were going to say that, just so you know, I am tired of living like this!” she shouted before storming out of the room. “What do you mean?” I shouted back but she didn't even respond. I stood in shock, trying to process everything that had happened. I wanted to run after her wanting to understand all that was going on but I decided to let her be for a while. Something was going on with her and she needed to figure it out. This wasn't my Rebecca anymore, it was like she changed these past few hours. Even Angela’s attitude also changed. After some minutes, I heard the loud bang of the front door. She left! It was past ten in the night, where the hell was she going to? Rushing out of the house, I noticed I couldn't find her figure again. I checked left and right but she had disappeared into thin air. I was going insane, how the hell does someone change this fast? I could still picture our lunch clearly in my head, she wasn't acting this way. She was her usual safe, the one with smiles all over. Going back into the house, I felt defeated. I felt like someone who had just lost a battle. I felt broken and useless as I sat down on the cold floor. All these times, I felt like I was a perfect husband and my wife enjoyed me. I didn't know I was failing in my part, I wanted to hit the wall so badly. I needed to vent my anger all out, I knew Rebecca deserved more but I couldn't afford it! We were living in this little house in penury, she deserved better but I couldn't do it. She had always told me that she wanted her fashion house when we were in college and I had promised her to build one for her. Deciding to do what I should have done all this while, I picked up my phone and dialed a number. The phone rang while I waited patiently, hoping for the person to pick me up. Who was this person?
