CHAPTER 3 DAMIAN’S POV Things hadn’t gone as expected. I had always wanted a peaceful family with love and laughter everywhere but the reverse had been the case for me. I felt alone and was only reminded by Rebecca that she was with me. She was a lovely wife. I wished my parents could see her right now. They needed to see that I didn't make the wrong choice in getting married to her. She is the best thing that has happened to me since my family had cut ties with me. Their point was baseless, they were always saying no one would stay with me if I wasn't wealthy but I guessed Rebecca proved them wrong. We weren't wealthy but she was staying with me, our lives were stronger than those with wealth. We cared about each other and were willing to help each other no matter what. I was happy that I still went ahead with my decision even after my father did what he did. It was painful, losing one’s family while they were still alive. It was worse that my father had to do it on a call, I wished to see his expression. I wanted to know if he truly meant his words and if he was even hurt by doing so but I couldn't. I lost my family after that call, my father has not hesitated to break our bond over a phone call. Still, I managed to put on a null expression for my new bride. This wasn’t what I wanted for her, I wanted a grand wedding with Rebecca. I wanted to reveal myself to her, everything about me but the situation had turned the other way around. It has been five years! Five good years since I had tried to keep up with myself, I managed to stay strong regardless of what had happened with my family. Rebecca was now my family and she treated me like one. I was working as a designer in a small firm with little income. I and Rebecca got the job fee months after we graduated from college, it was a good thing because I hated being a liability. Worried that I wouldn't be able to get a job to feed myself and my new family, my job came as a relief at the right time. I wasn't earning that much but at least it was something enough to provide shelter and basic necessities. Her family was kind enough to welcome me with open arms into their home. After explaining everything to Angela, she understood perfectly and blessed our marriage. Angela was a beautiful soul, she was kind and nice-hearted. It was rare to see a mother like that and I appreciated her for everything that she has done for us. Even when things were bad and we could barely afford things, she came through for us and helped us out. Still, I couldn't tell them that my father was the richest man in the city. Carrying the secret around with no intention of spilling it soon. I was never going to do so anyway, as far as I was concerned, I didn't have any family. I had accepted that I was a solo man and had to do everything by myself. Life was good, at least for now… “Let's hurry baby, we are already late for work!” I called out to Rebecca. I still don't understand the things with ladies, they get up very early and still end up getting late to work. “Give me a minute please!” she replied. I couldn't help but roll my eyes before sitting back tiredly. “I am sorry, my heels were giving me issues!” I heard her voice and turned to look at her. She was looking as stunning as any lady could ever look, my lips twitched before finally giving into the smile that was threatening to break out. “You look ravishing,” I muttered before walking to her and placing a long kiss. “You are so perverse! I thought you said we were late already!” She said let out with a smile. “I don't mind being late when it comes to you,” I replied with a sly smile while she eyed me playfully. “I wouldn't allow that, we are not about to get fired. Are we?” She questioned while pushing me out of the house. We made it to the company and separated into our various departments. I sunk my buttocks into my chair with a sigh, I had a lot to do with a limited time. Reaching for my old laptop, I started punching the keys as I had something to type. After a while of typing and correcting some errors in the new design that was sent to me, it was finally break time. I anticipated this period because I could spend it with my lovely wife. “Are you still working on something?” I heard a voice that I was familiar with. Rebecca stood behind the door, peeping in. “Why the f**k are you doing that? Come in.” I said with a laugh as she walked in. “I know you will be so engrossed in what you are doing. Let's have lunch, I am starving!” she complained and I immediately shut down the laptop while we headed out. Several pleasantries were exchanged as we walked towards the office exit. We headed to a nearby restaurant which was cheaper and ordered something. “I love their fries!” REBECCA hummed in satisfaction. After me, what she loved next was food. She wouldn't miss their meal for anything in the world. “You have said that every day we come here. They should make you their marketer already,” I joked while we shared a hearty laughter. We discussed this for a while about trivial issues before going back to work. This had been my usual routine since we had started working here and I wasn't exhausted from it. I wanted to live these moments forever. When my family cut ties with me, I had thought that was the end of my life. I begged and tried to explain things but they weren't willing to listen, they didn't hesitate to disown me. Feeling alone, I went back to Rebecca in tears and she accepted me. It was hard for me to adjust to the new lifestyle but I was glad I did and was now enjoying the simplicity of life. I hadn't set eyes on any of my family members but had watched them on television a few times. They all seemed to be doing good without my presence and I was okay with it. The pain was still there and will ever be there. Manu questions run through my mind just thinking about it. Did they ever love me? Did they ever consider me family if they did, they wouldn't have left just because I wanted to be happy. I didn't care about their wealth, all I needed was family support! They were selfish and didn't even think twice about me, I promised myself never to forgive them for what they had done. I was going to build my family and stay away from them, they didn't deserve my love or care. I shrugged off the negative feeling and got back to work only to be distracted by a knock on the door. “Mom said she needed to see me, I will be heading to her place,” Rebecca said once she came in. “Is everything fine? Should I come with you?” I asked her. I was slightly worried and hoped everything was fine. “I honestly don't know but with her tone, it was good news,” she said. I nodded my head and stood up to peck her before she rushed out. What could her mother possibly want to talk to her about? And she only requested for Rebecca's presence or baffled me.
