Chapter 01
~HAILEY~ “For the last time, Hailey, get your ass down here for breakfast.” My mom yelled from the living room of our small three bedroom apartment in NYC, but I didn't flinch, I kept myself buried under my duvet, my hair a total mess and still had the heartbreak song playing from the speaker. My eye lids were a complete ruin and my reputation? f****d up completely. Another whimper tore out from my throat as the scene played in my head again and again, “Bianca has always been my girlfriend.” Jacob's confession to the entire school after his team finally won the game reverberated in my head, I closed my eyes tightly as their kiss scene slammed its way into my head again. He was cheating on me while I was playing the perfect girlfriend for a year. When he asked me to be his girlfriend a year ago, I was over the moon, but three days ago, I had just realized it was a trap. Bianca had orchestrated it to ruin my reputation in the whole school for standing up to her in the past. I let out a low scoff. I was never even his girlfriend in the first place. My heart thumped so hard in my chest I thought it was going to rip out if I didn't stop thinking about it. I had been crying myself to sleep for three whole days, barely eating anything. Suddenly, there was a knock at my door and while still underneath the duvet, I yelled, “Go away Mom, I'm not hungry.” “I don't f*****g care, I'm coming in so put on something if you have to.” My brother, Colton yelled from outside and in two minutes, the door opened. Damn that broken lock I hadn't fixed yet. I still didn't lift the duvet off my body while I prayed Colton wouldn't find me where I was. “Goodness, this place is a graveyard, Hailey. What the hell?” He yelled, turning off the music and suddenly lifted the duvet off me with a strength I knew I couldn't match even if I wanted to. The bright light through the window blinded me for a few seconds and I quickly lifted my arm to block it, “What do you want, Colton?” “Come downstairs and have breakfast. Mom and Dad are worried about you.” “I'm not hungry.” I said, about to cover myself again, but he grabbed the duvet before I could reach for it, “Stop acting like a chicken over some dickhead, Hailey. You're only 19 and you'll meet other guys who…” “Stop talking. You won't understand what it feels like when you've never even liked a girl before.” He suddenly went quiet, but I didn't stare at him. Then, I heard him heave a sigh as he took a seat on the bed beside me. Colton and I were twins and spent most of our years getting on each other's nerves all the time. He was older than me by five minutes, and never failed to rub it in my face since we were kids. “Fine, I'll help you talk to Mom and Dad for a transfer to my school, if and only if you agree not to mess things up and be good.” His eyes softened as he stared at me. My brows knotted as all I could think about was that he was probably teasing me. I had begged my parents two days ago that I wanted to transfer but since I couldn't give a tangible reason, my request wasn't granted. I knew Colton could convince them for me, but he had refused to help because apparently, he was famous in his school as a football star and didn't want people knowing he had a sister who got on his nerves all the damn time. “Promise? No, pinky promise.” I said, bringing out my pinky fingers, but he rolled his eyes at me. We never broke pinky promises since we were kids, “Do you really still do this childish stuff?” He uttered and I pouted, still with my pinky out, “It's the only way…” With a light groan, he brought out his pinky fingers and locked it with mine. “Downstairs in five minutes.” As Colton walked out of my room, I rose up and headed for my desk. Last night, I had gone through my diary to realize how foolishly in love I had been with Jacob but all of that was going to change soon. I picked up the diary and immediately tossed it into the trash can close to my door, then I heaved a sigh of relief. In ten minutes, I got dressed and headed downstairs to see my brother, mom and dad seated at the dining, “About time young lady.” Mom uttered as I took my seat next to Colton, “What did you threaten your brother with?” Mom said before I even dug into my meal, “Colton approved your transfer to his school. It's like I don't even know my son anymore.” She continued, and I immediately tilted my head towards him, hiding my excitement as I stared at him. I could kiss him right now, but that would be stealing his first kiss and gross, I would never even dream of kissing Colton. “Does this mean I'm really transferring after the holiday?” “Your dad would handle it before the holiday runs out.” Mom uttered and when I stared at Dad, he nodded his head. “Thanks mom, thanks dad.” “You should thank your brother.” Dad uttered. I stared at Colton, and smiled at him, but he gave me an ugly face and I rolled my eyes at him. He was such an asshole. “And while you're at it, ensure not to make his life hard. Your brother's training hard for his games next session so no arguments in school, young lady.” I nodded my head happily. Colton had always been my parents' favourite even though they never admitted to it. He had a clear dream which was obviously a football career and also the full support of my parents, but I had no idea what I wanted yet and somewhere deep inside, I had a feeling I was going to figure everything out in this new school. My life was going to change, I would make sure of it, but first, I had to forget that bastard, and that he ever even existed in the first place.
