CHAPTER 1
"6 months?" The words reverberated through the room, a stark proclamation that seemed to echo in the luxurious living room. Benjamin stood there, his father's unwavering gaze fixed upon him, the weight of those words pressing heavily on his shoulders. The luxurious surroundings of the living room felt constricting, almost suffocating under the weight of the unexpected ultimatum that had been placed upon him.
His father's voice was firm, his eyes piercing through the space between them. "Find a woman, fall in love, and get married within 6 months, or I'll have no choice but to reconsider your place in the company and by reconsider, I mean removing you from the company.
The words hung in the air like an unexpected storm, catching Benjamin off guard. His father, David Grant, stood before him, David was a tall man, his salt-and-pepper hair neatly combed, his suit impeccable as always. He radiated an air of authority that had been instilled in him through years of running the family's billion-dollar business.
"Reconsider my place, Remove me from the company, Fall in love, and get married in 6 months ?" he repeated these words as he could not understand, his voice carrying a mix of disbelief and astonishment at the audacity of his father's expectations.
"Yes," David replied, his tone unyielding. "It's time for you to consider the bigger picture, to think about the family you want to build." There is more to life than just burying yourself with work.
"Your mother and I had a life outside of the business, A family." He said
I know," but, I'm focused on building the company, Father. Relationships can always wait."Benjamin replied, his tone steady and filled with frustration.
David's gaze studied Benjamin for a moment before he spoke. "You've accomplished a lot, Benjamin. The partnership deal we secured is proof of your dedication and hard work." But it's also important to strike a balance between business and personal life.
"6 months to fall in love and get married?"Benjamin repeated this time his voice filled with tension. The notion felt almost preposterous, like a plot from a melodramatic novel. The guarded heart he had cultivated over the years now stood as a barrier against his father's expectations.
As the atmosphere in the room tensed, a sudden buzz from David's phone disrupted the heavy silence between them. His focus briefly shifted to the device, and with a composed nod following the call, he turned and left the room his footsteps echoed like a quiet refrain, a reminder of the journey that lay ahead. Benjamin stood there, his gaze fixed on the retreating figure of his father as he could not come to terms with the conversation that had just transpired between him and his father.
Benjamin knew his father had always been concerned about his lack of interest in relationships since his college days. The topic had surfaced in various conversations over the years, his father's worries expressed in subtle ways. Yet, as he stood there, struggling with the ultimatum that had just been delivered, he had never expected his father to go overboard like this.
Could this be happening? He murmured to himself, a mix of disbelief, confusion, and a touch of anger swirling within him, his mind racing as he struggled to process the magnitude of what his father was asking. He had always thought that his dedication to the company would be enough for his father and that even if he was ever going to consider marriage it was never going to be on such a tight timeline.
Was this the reason behind his father's abrupt cancellation of the board meeting? He thought to himself
He had just secured a multi-million-dollar deal, a major achievement that had required weeks of negotiation and strategic planning. Benjamin had been excited to tell the board members about the success of the partnership deal. But then his father suddenly canceled the meeting and said there was something important they needed to deal with urgently at home. This unexpected change in plans surprised Benjamin and made him wonder what could be so urgent that his father had to stop the meeting.
He stood at the large window of the house, staring out at the city skyline. The sun was setting, casting a warm, golden color over the buildings. He felt a twinge of irritation and anger, he had always been content in his solitude.
How could he possibly find someone to love in just six months? The idea seemed absurd, an impossible feat given his guarded heart and the skepticism he held toward romantic notions. Love was a word he had rarely taken seriously, and the concept of falling for someone was foreign territory for him. His parents' marriage had been a source of inspiration for him, but he couldn't bring himself to follow the same path and the idea of entertaining a relationship seemed both daunting and unnecessary.
As evening fell, Benjamin retreated to his bedroom, He sank onto the bed, staring up at the ceiling, lost in thought. The room seemed to close in around him as he pondered the magnitude of what his father had just said... Six months? He let out a loud sigh "What on earth was his father thinking?", as his fingers unconsciously traced the edges of the silk bedspread beneath him, He couldn't deny the knot of anxiety that had formed in his chest, the knot that seemed to tighten with every passing second.
His mind filled with doubts and questions as he closed his eyes. He couldn't help but wonder why his father had chosen this particular day to deliver such a life-altering ultimatum. Thinking through possible scenarios, trying to imagine how he could get out of this.
His thoughts slowly shifted to his mother, he considered her affectionate smiles and the love she shared with his father. Love had played a significant role in their bond, something he struggled to fully understand the essence of.
"Could she possibly be aware of this?"
"Would she also be in support of this?" As he slowly drifted to sleep.
