Friends

Abby’s POV Today has been such a long day. Grocery shopping was exhausting and when mom and I returned home we went straight into preparing for a barbecue my dad had agreed too with our neighbors. The McClains are nice and I know for a fact mom and dad will enjoy being friends with them. Mom and dad have not had great friends in a long time. They had a few friends back home but were not so close. Many years ago, before the twins were born, there was a couple that were good friends with my parents, they had date nights and all but that all came to an end when they moved away to another country. The McClains seem like that nice couple they will be friends with. The McClains only have two children Dylan and his elder sister Sara who is away in university studying law. Mom was happy to know about Sara studying law. Mom is a lawyer and she wants one of her kids to study law. I for one want to major in literature, the twins have random ideas of what it is they want to be when they grow up. We need to give them some time to also understand that they cannot be superheroes. Dylan seems like a nice person, but his persistence in knowing things about me is scary. I want to make friends yes but his pace is just too fast, he is very forward. But anyway, time shall tell and we shall see where all this takes us. This afternoon when he told me he likes me, I froze for a second. A boy has never told me they like me. Hearing him say those words tied knots in my stomach and I felt a blood rush to my cheeks. I have never felt that way before, a part of me was very happy to hear him say that and the difficult part was giving him a response. I was stuck thinking of an escape plan and just then the heavens came to my rescue when mom asked me to get something from the house which took a bit of my time, by the time I returned he had left. I was thrilled but wondered if he really meant what he said. Anyway, I need to relax after the day I have had. “Oh lord what a day.” I say to myself as I fall back on my bed letting out a deep breath. “No man that was uncalled for…..” I hear male voices from outside our house. It does not sound like Dylan and the voices are coming from his room. Must be Dylan with his friends, I guess. I get off the bed and walk towards my desk, I pick one of my literature novels Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. I am hoping to finish this book before schools open. I walk back to my bed and lay on my stomach with the book open to the last page I was on. I might as well buy myself some sleep. ********** Dylan's POV I am seated here with my friends playing games but where I actually want to be is in the house next door getting to know Abby. I think she is so interesting. I have not met a girl that is as fascinating as she is. She only moved in yesterday and yet I find everything about her amusing. Their whole family is amusing actually. Mr Fisher is a doctor with over 20 years of a experience. He is a surgeon at St Patrick’s hospital, one of the biggest hospitals here in our town. His wife is a lawyer who is currently not practicing but mentioned she will start soon. She was so thrilled to know about Sara studying law. Their Daughter Abby is quit something. She is beautiful, gets her looks from both her parents. The hair and body definitely from her mom and then her smile and eyes from her dad. Her personality is intriguing and I cannot wait to know more about her if she lets me. It’s so unfortunate that during the barbecue her mom asked her to do something and she took forever to come back. Perhaps I scared her off by telling her I liked her. I do not understand why I said it but it just came out. Then shortly after the guys called and mentioned they were home so I had to leave, I hope she did not feel bad. “When do we open for final year again?” Andy asks without taking his eyes off the screen, we are playing FIFA, I am not currently playing after being beaten by Andy. “In a week.” I respond while staring at the Abby’s bedroom window, she is not yet in her room. “Damn!! Why so soon.” Jay whines. “I thought you would be excited about getting into final year.” I hear Andy say to Jay. “Eyy there’s that and then there’s also college applications and stuff. If I still played football, I would have applied into one of those schools where I can play and they would advise what I should major in or something but since I no longer play its tough to decide.” Jay responds. Last year Jay got into a nasty football accident which damaged his knee. We all thought it was something he could heal from within a few days but that turned into weeks and eventually months. When he gave football, another shot, it made things worse and his doctor advised him to quit and that was the hardest thing. Andy, Jay and I have all always planned to play together and him quitting was hard on all of us. Jay of course pushed Andy and I to continue playing when we wanted to quit and so we did. “Have you thought about something you may want to do other than play football?” I ask. “Well, I was thinking of Architecture.” He responds after a while. “I agree with your thinking, you are good at all that design and drawing thing.” Andy adds. I too agree. Graphic design and drawing are thing Jay is very good at doing, he has been since we were all little. Jay and Andy go on playing until finally one of them loses. “No man that was uncalled for…..” Andy complains. “Well you thought you were better than all of us.” Jay smirks in victory. “Still, you did not have to injure my best player.” “It’s just a game you two.” I say. I notice the light in Abby’s room is finally on, she must be in. I must get over there but without these two noticing. “Dylan I noticed you have new neighbors. Is there a hot chic?” Jay asks. “Back off!!” “Ohhhh so there is.” Andy chuckles. “Wanna keep her for yourself?” Jay asks. “Shouldn’t you two be on your way home?” I ask with a raised eyebrow. “You are no fun Captain.” Andy sulks as he gets off my bed. “If you need a ride home let us go now.” He tells Jay. “Yeah I am coming. Are we meeting tomorrow?” Jay asks both of us. “I have plans with my family tomorrow. It’s Emma’s birthday.” Andy responds. “Are we invited?” Jay asks. “Yes, you both are unless…..” he stalls while staring at me. “I am busy I will not be able to attend.” I respond. “Okay, so I will see you tomorrow.” Andy lets Jay no. We all say our goodbyes as I walk them both out. Andy and Jay live in the same neighborhood which is about 10 minutes from here. The house is quiet, my parents must still be at the Fisher’s house. Abby’s light is still on, let me see if we can continue that conversation we had earlier. “That novel must be so interesting you haven’t noticed me sitting here.” “What,” she looks up from her novel then smiles. “How long have you been there?” “A minute or two.” “Wow you are very quiet then.” She smiles again. Her smile is beautiful, not to wide or bright, just simply beautiful. I get off the window seal and walk towards her bed then sit at the edge. “What are you reading?” I ask as I try to read the title off the cover. “Jane Eyre.” She responds then closes her book after placing a bookmark on the page. “Nice book. I won’t spoil it for you.” I say. “You’ve read Jane Eyre?” she asks sounding very surprised. “Why do you look mortified?” I ask. “Are we talking about the same book?” she raises an eyebrow. “Yes the one about the orphaned girl who fights for equality and searches for happiness. I won’t tell you everything, that might spoil it for you.” I stop. “Okayyyyy, and how did you end up reading this book?” she asks with chin resting above her folded arms. “Literature.” “You take literature?” she asks and I nod my head agreeing. “For real? That’s so cool.” She says. “Nahh not really.” I chuckle. “Literature is amazing. I hope I take it at my new school.” “Which school are you getting into?” I ask. Would be nice to hang out with her if she comes to Middleton high school. “Not yet sure, my dad is trying to narrow it down among the schools he thinks we should go too. I don’t really mind which school I just want to get through senior year and go to college.” She explains. “Yeah that makes two of us.” “So how come you left the barbecue early?” she asks. “My friends called saying they were home. I am sorry I left without saying bye but you took forever to come back.” I tell her. “I am sorry about that too. I could not find what my mom asked me to fetch.” “You sure you weren’t just running away from me?” “What that’s ridiculous, why would I be running away from you?” she says while getting off the bed. “You never came back did you?” I ask with a smirk. I told Abby I liked her before she went up and disappeared into their house. I must have made her uncomfortable. Fact is I do like her, she is different from the last girl I dated or any of the other girls I know. “I just told you I couldn’t find what I was looking for.” She says then folds her arms across her chest. “Fine, suit yourself.” I make myself comfortable on her bed by laying on my back with my arms folded behind my head. “What are you doing?” I hear her ask. “What does it look like?” I look up at her. “You are making yourself comfortable in my bed.” My emphasis on the last part. “Yes I am, wanna join me?” I wink at her. “Well go get comfortable on your own bed.” She says in a flat tone with her arms still closed. “C’mon I thought we are friends.” I whine. “You have your own bed back at home. Go lay in your bed.” She points at the window. “You are now assuming I have a bed.” I raise an eyebrow. “You obviously do.” “Another assumption. Maybe you should come over and check my room out. You might like it there.” I say then smirk. Her face starts to turn red. Oh lord what is she thinking about?
