(Daniel POV)
The hospital room was deathly quiet.
The heart monitor beeped steadily—slow, mechanical, almost indifferent. The only sign that life still lingered here.
William’s eyes snapped open.
He bolted upright from the bed, breathing hard, his gaze unfocused—yet disturbingly clear at the same time.
“Evelyn—!” His voice tore through the silence, hoarse, raw. “She’s not dead… she’s out there… she’s calling for us…”
I froze. My heart dropped. How could he possibly know?
For a split second, it felt like ice water had been poured down my spine. Impossible. No one knew. Everything had been handled cleanly. Perfectly.
And yet—The look in his eyes… This wasn’t delirium. It was certainty.
“She’s calling me…” William clutched the sheets, his knuckles white, his whole body shaking. “She’s out there in the ocean… crying for help… she’s still alive!”
Something tightened deep inside my chest. I stepped forward immediately, my face already shifting into concern—controlled, measured, believable.
“Dad, you need to calm down—” I placed a hand on his shoulder, applying just enough pressure. To everyone else, it was a comfort. In reality, it was restraint.
He struggled violently. “Let go of me!” he roared. “I have to find her! She’s out there! In a container!”
My breath hitched. A container? For a moment, I almost thought everything had been exposed. If he insisted on a search—if he pushed hard enough—they would find her. Too dangerous. I had to control this. Now.
Vanessa stepped in smoothly, her hand gently supporting his arm.“Uncle… you’re just overwhelmed,” she said softly. “It must have been a nightmare…”
I cut in immediately. “Dad… the doctor said you can’t leave the bed…” My voice dropped, thick with emotion. “Evelyn… she’s… she’s gone.”
“No!” he shouted, his voice breaking into a roar. “I wasn’t dreaming! She’s out there! She’s waiting for us!”
Beside him, Elizabeth looked like she was falling apart. She stood by the bed, swaying, clutching the railing as if it were the only thing keeping her upright.
“William… please… you have to think clearly…” Her voice trembled, on the edge of collapse. “Our Evelyn is…” She couldn’t finish. The word dead never came out.
She was too afraid of it—afraid it would shatter what little sanity William had left… afraid it would make it real. They had already lost their son. They couldn’t survive losing their daughter either.
I watched her. Pathetic.
Vanessa moved quickly, wrapping an arm around her.
“Aunt, please don’t do this to yourself…” she said gently, even reaching up to wipe her tears.
“No!” William cut her off sharply. His voice was hoarse—but unshakable. “She’s alive!”
His eyes locked onto mine, sharp, searching—as if trying to tear the truth straight out of my face. “She’s in the ocean! She’s calling me!”
He struggled again, the entire bed shaking under the force of it.
I had no choice. I pressed down harder on his shoulder, keeping my expression steady, controlled.
“We’ll go,” I said quickly. “We’ll go find her right now… but the doctor said you need to rest first.” A flicker of unease crept in.
Something about him… felt wrong. Too certain. Too close.
“Dad…” I lowered my head slightly. “The search team is already out there…”
“Uncle, Aunt… all we can do now is wait,” Vanessa added smoothly, sealing it—closing the door on any action.
Elizabeth finally broke down completely, collapsing onto William. “Please… don’t do this… please…”
The room dissolved into chaos again.
And I stood there. One hand still pressing down on William’s shoulder. Holding him in place. Keeping him from moving.
Keeping him from searching. My gaze darkened for the briefest moment.
Just a little longer. Just a little more time—and everything would be finished. The company would be mine.
