Chapter 1
(Evelyn POV)
The night hung over the ocean like a heavy curtain. No stars. No moon. Only a distant, faint navigation light—like a dying flicker of hope.
Waves pounded against the steel container again and again, each impact echoing hollow and deep, like a massive beast breathing.
I curled up inside the narrow container, my palms pressed hard against the freezing metal floor, knuckles white. The water had already reached my ankles, the icy cold creeping slowly up my legs.
I dared not move too fast—my body felt sluggish and heavy with the baby inside me.
Another wave slammed against the container—BANG! It lurched violently. I was thrown to the side, my shoulder smashing against the steel wall. The pain was so sharp it stole my breath.
Then—A harsh metallic tearing sound split the air. c***k—
I shot my head up. A longer fracture was slowly spreading across the wall, like a silent mouth mocking me. Seawater surged in through the gap. My breathing spiraled out of control.
"No…no…" I whispered, my voice trembling so much it was barely audible.
I forced myself forward and pressed my hands against the c***k, trying to hold it shut.
The icy water rushed through my fingers, violent and relentless, as if trying to rip me apart.
I bit my lip, tears finally escaping. "They think…I'll die…" My voice was small but stubborn. I lowered my gaze to my belly, my hand resting gently on it, instinctively soothing the other life inside me. "I can't die…I really can't…"
Three hours earlier
The sea wind cut like knives. I was kneeling on the deck, hands wrapped protectively around my stomach, breathing ragged. My dress whipped wildly in the wind. I felt like an abandoned animal.
"Daniel…please…" My voice was hoarse, barely my own. "I'm carrying your child…"I looked up at him. My eyes were wet and bright. No pride. No defenses. Just the last, fragile thread of hope.
Vanessa walked slowly toward me in heels, each step light, like she was watching a performance. She stopped in front of me, bending slightly, her smile cold, perfect. "Do you still not understand?" she said softly. "He's mine now." She slipped her arm through Daniel's, intimate and possessive.
My pupils shrank in shock. "Vanessa…why?" I whispered, voice breaking. "I treated you like family…my brother—he loved you so much…"
The smile vanished from her face, replaced by a chilling boredom. "Don't mention Lucas," she said calmly. "He found out too much." She paused, then added softly,"So he had to die."
The air froze.
I went rigid. "You…what did you just say…?" Daniel sighed, a flicker of impatience in his eyes. He pulled Vanessa into his arms, the gesture gentle, but my heart felt ripped apart.
"Enough," he said. "Let's not waste time. Once we deal with her, we've got other things to do."
"Wait," Vanessa said, smiling lightly. But her eyes—sharp as knives—were fixed on me. "I'm not done watching."
She crouched slowly. Her fingers slid into my hair. And then—She yanked.
"Ah—!" My head snapped back, tears spilling instantly. I trembled as I grabbed Daniel's pant leg. "Daniel…please…" I sobbed, barely able to form the words. "That's your child…"
Daniel looked down at me. There was nothing in his eyes. No warmth. No hesitation. Then he kicked my hand away. "That's yours," he said coldly.
He turned, hand resting gently on Vanessa's stomach, his voice soft now. "My child…is here."
That moment—Was crueler than death.
My hands fell limply to the floor. My world collapsed in an instant.
"Why…why are you doing this…" My voice was barely a whisper.
For the first time, Daniel's expression changed—real this time. Not anger. But resentment. And ambition. "Because of you," he said. "And your untouchable father." He looked down at me, his words like knives. "Once you're dead, your shares become mine. Simple as that."
Vanessa laughed softly. Then—she shoved me.
BANG!
The back of my head slammed against the container. The world went black.
In the last moment before I lost consciousness, I heard Vanessa's voice, soft and distant:"Next life…try to be smarter."
The door slammed shut. The lock clicked into place.
ROAR—!! The container was pushed into the sea.
Freezing water swallowed everything.
The container was dark, damp, and suffocating.
I choked on seawater, coughing until it felt like I couldn't breathe. When I opened my eyes, icy water had already reached my chest. My wet clothes clung to my skin, every muscle protesting.
Trembling, I struggled to my feet, hands pressed against the freezing steel wall. Through the small gaps,I tried to take in my surroundings.
Memories cut into my mind like blades—Daniel had suggested a sea trip, even renting a dual-purpose cargo boat… It wasn't a trip at all. It was a trap. A murder plot.
Despair washed over me like a tidal wave. Out here, in the middle of the endless ocean, if I died, almost no one would ever know.
I lowered my head and gently touched the curve of my belly, my fingertips brushing against the faint warmth of the life inside me.
"Baby… don't be afraid. Mommy won't let anything happen to you. I'll protect you." Tears mixed with the seawater streaking down my face, my voice barely audible, swallowed by the waves.
