Chapter 2

525 Words
(Daniel POV) My collar was suddenly yanked tight, jerking me forward. It's William. His hand was shaking, but his grip was iron—tight enough to tear me apart. “What did you just say?” His voice was hoarse, breaking. “What happened to Evelyn?” I lowered my head, forcing my breathing out of rhythm, letting my shoulders tremble. The performance began. “Dad…” My voice caught, like I couldn’t go on. “It was me… I should’ve been watching her…” I dropped to my knees. They hit the ground hard, pain shooting up through my bones—but I didn’t move. I needed this. The posture. The guilt. “I wish… it had been me… the one who fell into the sea…” I said softly, my voice cracking at just the right places. The next second—A fist slammed into my shoulder. Pain exploded. I let myself collapse onto the floor, gasping, one hand bracing against the ground like I couldn’t take the hit. “You worthless piece of trash!” William roared. I kept my head down. No resistance. I couldn’t fight back. The more broken I looked, the more believable it was. “My daughter…” His voice trembled now. “She can’t be dead! She’s pregnant!” The baby. For a split second, irritation flickered through me. I buried it instantly. Now was not the time for mistakes. I slowly looked up, eyes reddened, deliberately making my breathing more uneven. “I’ve already sent people to search…” I said. “But the storm out there was too strong…” I let the sentence trail off. Better unfinished. More convincing. A sob broke out nearby. Elizabeth stumbled forward, grabbing William’s arm, barely able to stand.“My princess… how could this happen…” Her voice tore apart in grief. I glanced at her. Real. Painfully real. Vanessa stepped forward then, gently supporting Elizabeth with careful hands. “Aunt…” Her voice was soft—perfectly so. “I know this is hard to accept…” She paused, just enough. “But there was a storm. She was standing at the bow… she must have slipped.” Every word steady. Flawless. I didn’t even need to look to know her expression—grief, restraint, helplessness. Perfect. William’s head snapped up, eyes bloodshot. “No!” he shouted. “I don’t believe it!” He pointed at me, his hand shaking violently. “Go find her! Find her now! She’s still alive!” For a moment, I could almost feel it—He truly believed she was alive. What a shame. I lowered my gaze, hiding the flicker of coldness in my eyes. The next second, his body swayed. A hand clutched his chest. Then he collapsed. “William!” Elizabeth screamed, throwing herself toward him. “Call an ambulance! Hurry!” Chaos erupted instantly. And I remained on my knees. Head lowered. Like a man who looked like he had lost everything. No one noticed the faint, almost invisible trace of indifference at the corner of my lips. Everything—was going exactly according to plan.
