CHAPTER ONE: ECOUNTER
The young woman stepped into the store early that morning, making her way toward the back door. “There you are!” she called, spotting her cat. “Cindy, you made me look for you everywhere. Come on, let’s go home. I still need to get some sleep before six.” She picked up the cat and hurried out of the store, completely unaware of what awaited them just two blocks from home. THUD! A loud crash suddenly echoed through the quiet street. Reign froze. Then a man's furious voice rang out from a nearby warehouse. “You idiots! Do you have any idea who you’re messing with?” Reign narrowed her eyes. Something was wrong. Very wrong. And for some reason, the strange feeling in her chest told her that whatever was happening had something to do with her. Inside the warehouse, a young man stood with a gun pointed directly at him. “Zephyr, Zephyr, Zephyr…” one of the masked men sneered. “Who would've thought that even with a gun pointed at you, you'd still be this arrogant?” Zephyr smirked. “What? Does my arrogance make you want to fall for me?” He shrugged. “Well, I'll pass, because I'm straight. I'm into girls only.” SMACK! The slap echoed through the warehouse. Zephyr's head snapped to the side. A young woman's voice suddenly came from the entrance. “I'm curious. What exactly are you waiting for?” The masked men turned toward her. One of them, a man who appeared to be in his mid-forties, stepped forward with a smug smile. “Young miss, won't killing him be a waste?” he asked. “We should ask for a ransom first. His family can give us whatever we demand. Then we kill him.” The young woman smiled. “Sounds like a plan.” Meanwhile, outside the warehouse, Cindy was trembling in Reign's arms. “Reign, I'm too young to die! Let's leave this place!” Reign stared at her. “You're a cat.” “Exactly! I have nine lives!” Cindy struggled out of Reign's arms. “I've already used three. That means I have seven left, and I would very much like to keep them!” She jumped down. Unfortunately, her paw hit something on the ground. CLANG! The loud noise echoed through the warehouse. Reign's eyes widened. “Cindy!” “Who's there?” one of the masked men shouted. He immediately raised his gun toward the direction of the noise. Another man signaled for him to search the area. Reign stepped out from behind the doorway. “Release him right now!” Cindy stared at her in disbelief. “Just so you know, that was the worst introduction ever.” “We'll come up with another one later. For now, focus.” The young woman standing beside Zephyr raised an eyebrow. “Who are you?” Reign took a deep breath. “I am his girlfriend, so I want you to release him.” Zephyr immediately spoke up. “She’s lying. I don't have a girlfriend.” Reign's eye twitched. “I’m a playboy,” Zephyr added proudly. Cindy slowly turned around. “That's it. I'm going home.” She began walking toward the exit. “Cindy, wait!” Reign called. “We have to help him!” Cindy stopped and looked back. “That guy is a nutcase. He doesn't even want to help himself!” Reign glanced at Zephyr. He was still smiling despite the gun pointed at his head. She sighed. Cindy stared at her. “Why?” “Because something bad is about to happen.” “Something bad is already happening!” “I mean something worse.” Cindy's ears immediately perked up. “Worse than a gun?” Reign nodded. “Much worse.” Cindy slowly looked around the warehouse. “Okay. I suddenly support leaving.” Reign grabbed her by the tail. “Too late.” “MY TAIL!” “Sorry.” “You are absolutely not sorry!” Before Reign could respond, the masked man nearest to them raised his gun. “Both of you! Hands where I can see them!” Reign slowly raised her hands. Cindy raised one paw. The masked man stared at her. “What's the cat doing?” Cindy lowered her paw. “Being cooperative.” Everyone went silent. The masked man blinked. “Did that cat just—” “Meow.” Cindy quickly interrupted herself. Reign covered her mouth to stop herself from laughing. The masked man shook his head. “Whatever. Get on your knees!” Reign frowned. “No.” The man pointed the gun at her. “I said get on your knees!” “And I said no.” “Do you have a death wish?” “No.” Reign glanced at Zephyr. “But apparently he does.” Zephyr grinned. “Finally, someone understands me.” “Shut up!” “Make me.” Reign's eye twitched.
