The Debt Collector
The rain was falling hard on 5th Avenue, and my shoes were full of water. I stared at the red FINAL NOTICE letter in my hand. The hospital logo at the top was blurred from the rain. $47,320. Amount due in 3 days. Mom's second surgery. I crumpled the paper and pushed open the door to the small diner where I worked. The bell rang. "Elena! You're late again!" My boss, Mrs. Patterson, shouted from the counter. "Sorry, the bus—" "I don't care about the bus. Table 6 needs coffee. And your father called again. He sounded drunk." My stomach dropped. My father. The reason for everything. Two months ago, he had come to my tiny apartment, crying. He said he just needed a small loan to fix his truck for work. He begged me to sign as a guarantor. I signed without reading. I was stupid. I trusted him. The next week, two men came to the diner looking for him. They said he borrowed $2 million from Blackwood Corp and disappeared. Two million dollars. My father, a failed mechanic, borrowed two million from the most dangerous company in New York. Everyone in the city knew the name Blackwood. Officially, it was real estate and private security. Unofficially, it was the mafia that owned half the city. And its owner, Kael Blackwood, was not a man you wanted to meet. I was pouring coffee when the black Range Rover stopped outside. It was too clean, too expensive for this street. The door opened and every customer in the diner went silent. He walked in. He was tall — at least 6'4, with black hair pushed back, wet from the rain. He wore a black suit that must have cost more than my yearly rent. But it was his eyes that made my hand shake and spill the coffee. They were not normal. They were amber, almost gold, like a wolf's eyes. And they were looking directly at me. "Elena Cruz?" His voice was deep and cold. It had an accent, slight, controlled. Mrs. Patterson stepped back. "Who— who are you?" He didn't look at her. He took off his gloves slowly. "Kael Blackwood. I'm here for what I'm owed." My legs almost gave out. The coffee pot clattered onto the table. "You have the wrong person," I whispered, but my voice betrayed me. He took three steps closer. I could smell him now — rain, expensive cologne, and something wild, like pine and smoke. My heart was beating so fast it hurt. "Your father is Victor Cruz. He borrowed two million dollars from me. He signed your name as collateral. You are the debt now." The diner was dead silent. I could feel everyone's eyes on me. "That's not possible. I didn't agree to—" "You signed." He placed a folder on the counter. Inside was a paper with my signature, shaky and stupid. Underneath, in bold letters: *IN CASE OF DEFAULT, THE GUARANTOR AGREES TO FULFILL THE CONTRACT AS DETERMINED BY THE CREDITOR.* "I was tricked! I can't pay two million! I work in a diner!" "I know you can't pay," he said quietly. He leaned in, and for a second, his gold eyes flashed. I thought I imagined it. "That's why I've come to collect you instead." "Collect me? What does that mean?" He looked me up and down, not in a dirty way, but like he was assessing something, like he was confused by what he saw. His nostrils flared slightly, as if he was smelling something. "You smell... different," he muttered to himself. Then louder, "You will come with me. You will live in my house for one year. You will work off your father's debt. As my personal assistant. You will be under my protection. And you will not run." Assistant? That was not what I expected. "And if I say no?" He smiled, but it didn't reach his eyes. "Then I call the police and report your father for fraud. He goes to prison for twenty years. And I call the hospital and tell them your mother’s bills will never be paid. Your choice." My mother. That was the button he needed to push. I felt tears burn my eyes. I thought of my mother in the hospital bed, smiling even though she was in pain. I thought of my father, wherever he was, drinking while I suffered. "One year?" I asked. "One year. You live in my estate. You follow my rules. After one year, the debt is cleared. Your father is free. Your mother’s hospital bills — I will pay them in full." He was a monster, but he was offering the only lifeline I had. "How do I know you won't... hurt me?" For the first time, his expression softened, just a fraction. "I have no interest in hurting women, Elena. I have interest in getting my money back, one way or another. Your father thought he could cheat me. He was wrong. But you... you didn't know." He pulled out a black card and placed it on the counter. "A car will be outside your apartment tomorrow at 7 AM. Pack one bag. If you are not there, I will know you chose the other option." He turned to leave. The rain had stopped. His men, two huge guys in suits, opened the door for him. Just as he reached the door, he stopped and looked back over his shoulder. His gold eyes locked onto mine, and a strange shiver ran down my spine — not from fear, but from something else I couldn't name. Something ancient and warm, spreading from my chest. "We will see each other soon, Elena Cruz. Don't keep me waiting." Then he was gone. The Range Rover disappeared down 5th Avenue, leaving puddles and silence behind. Mrs. Patterson rushed to me. "Elena, dear, who was that? Are you okay?" I wasn't okay. I was holding the black card. On the back, there was an address embossed in gold: *BLACKWOOD ESTATE, HUDSON VALLEY* and a single line handwritten in sharp, elegant writing: _You can't escape a debt owed to an Alpha._ Alpha? What did he mean by Alpha? That night, I went to my apartment and packed one bag. I looked at my sleeping mother’s photo on the wall and cried. I didn't know that tomorrow morning, when I stepped into his car, I would be stepping into a world where men turn into wolves, where my scent could drive a billionaire Alpha insane, and where the debt I was paying was not money at all. It was fate.
