Chapter 1: The Beginning..
Her paws pounded against the soft earth as she raced through the woods, her sleek fur rippling in the wind. Joy and freedom filled her heart as she reveled in the simple pleasure of running. The pack had finally settled down after months of constant wandering, finding refuge in an abandoned warehouse on the outskirts of a dense forest in the Oregon mountains. She was grateful for the stability and security, no longer having to roam like nomads. However, there were still some members of the rogue pack who struggled with staying in one place for too long.
For the past several months, every moment of free time was devoted to her wolf form, racing through the untamed woods behind the abandoned warehouse that had become her home. Along with fulfilling pack duties, there were always endless chores to be done. But in her wanderings, she stumbled upon a hidden cave nestled deep in the mountains. A gentle stream ran through its center, its soothing murmur echoing off the cavern walls.
The entrance was adorned with shimmering crystal formations, capturing stray rays of light and transforming them into a mesmerizing display of stars against an obsidian sky. In this tranquil haven, she could escape from reality and let her mind drift towards a more idyllic existence while reflecting on the life she once knew.
As she rounded the edge of a giant redwood tree, its rough bark pressed against her palm and its towering height made her feel small. She climbed the face of the mountain, feeling the strain in her muscles, but determined to reach her destination. Finally, she arrived at the entrance of the sanctuary, a small cave nestled among the jagged rocks. It was her refuge, the one good thing in her chaotic life.
She stepped inside and immediately heard the soothing sound of fresh spring water running through the cave's center. The scent of damp earth filled her nostrils as she approached the stream. With cupped hands, she drank deeply from the cool water, feeling it replenish her tired body. A wave of relief washed over her as she collapsed beside the stream, grateful for this peaceful moment.
Lazily she lay there, marveling at how the light reflected off the crystals embedded in the cave walls. They sparkled like stars in a night sky, casting an otherworldly glow around her. Despite its simple appearance, this sanctuary held a beauty that was both mesmerizing and mysterious.
Her thoughts drifted to her past, memories both painful and distant. But in this moment, surrounded by nature and tranquility, she felt lucky to have this space of her own. It was a haven she could retreat to whenever life became too overwhelming, a place where she could find solace and peace amidst chaos.
As memories from a decade ago flooded back, she shuddered uncontrollably. Vivid flashes of destruction and loss overtook her senses, as if they were happening in real time rather than just recollections. The images were like a movie playing in her mind - a home reduced to rubble, lives snuffed out too soon.
At only eight years old, she had experienced more devastation than most people do in a lifetime. Her newly acquired wolf, still learning how to communicate with its human counterpart, whined in the back of her mind as it felt the weight of these painful memories. Every emotion from that fateful night surged through her body, pulsating like hot blood through her veins. With trembling limbs and eyes squeezed shut, she surrendered to the all-consuming power of her lingering recollections.
Terror and desperation consumed her as she sprinted through the village, shrieking for her parents. The once peaceful village was now a scene of chaos and destruction. Buildings were engulfed in flames, sending billows of dark smoke into the air. The acrid smell of burning flesh and blood filled her nostrils, making her gag. But within the chaos, there was an eerie quiet that deafened her senses.
She had been exploring the woods behind their home when she heard the screams and saw the smoke rising above the trees. Racing back to the village, her heart pounded with fear as she searched for her parents. She called out their names over and over again, but there was no response. Her body ached, and her chest heaved with sobs as she pushed past burning buildings and charred bodies lining the streets.
Every alleyway, every home became a potential hiding place for her missing family. But as she frantically searched, it became clear that they were no longer alive. The realization hit her like a punch in the gut, but she refused to give up hope. Breathless and exhausted, she continued to run through the devastation, determined to find anyone who might have survived. But each door she opened revealed more disaster – more burning homes and lifeless bodies.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, she collapsed onto her knees in the middle of it all and wept. It wasn't until much later that she would understand the pain she felt was not just from losing her family, but from the final break in their connection as they took their last breaths.
Do not give up, her conscience whispered. Shakily she stood and began to walk hastily again, searching for anyone left alive. She had no idea what had happened or why. All she knew was nothing would ever be the same.
She rounded the corner, finally seeing the pack house in a blaze in the middle of the village. As she began to increase her speed, a voice stopped her in her tracks. "Hello, their young one," a voice crept in behind her; she turned to see a man standing behind her. He was as large as a tree, and something about him froze her to the core. She wanted to scream, wanted to run. Still, she stood there frozen, wide-eyed, staring at the massive man. His eyes were red like the fire burning in her village, his hair as black as the night sky, and his features pointed and menacing. He was an unusually large man even for a wolf, and he smelt of burning trees or maybe that was the surrounding village. No words came from her lips. She could not move or scream, only stare at him.
His face softened a little before he spoke again, his voice now laced with a hint of desperation and sadness. "Come here, child," he said, his words tinged with both a sense of urgency and authority. "Your family is gone; I will take you to my family for your survival." His voice sent shivers down her spine, and she wanted to scream and run, but she stood frozen in fear as he approached her. The stranger's piercing gaze met hers, and she couldn't help but notice the complexity in his eyes. There was a hint of kindness there, but also a darkness that she couldn't quite place. She tried to read him, but his enigmatic presence left her feeling unsettled.
She wanted to resist as he picked her up like a sack of potatoes and began to carry her away from the village. But her body felt numb, and she couldn't find the strength to fight back. She watched helplessly as her home faded into the distance, tears streaming down her face like a river. She wanted to scream, to beg for him to let her go, but no sound escaped her lips. And as the stranger carried her further and further away from everything she had ever known, she felt an overwhelming sense of loss and despair.
No words were exchanged between them as they traveled into the unknown. The stranger's grip on her tightened, and she could feel his heartbeat against her stomach. She couldn't shake off the feeling that there was something deeply unsettling about him. As they journeyed on, her town vanished into thin air as if it had only been a dream. The pain in her chest intensified, and it was so unbearable that she eventually lost consciousness. But even in her unconscious state, she could still feel the stranger's presence, and she knew that her fate was now in his hands.
Snapping out of her daydream, she shook her muzzle, her pain whimpering in the back of her mind. She wanted to forget the past, but it seemed to haunt her still. The nightmares surrounding those events were often fierce, but nothing compared to the nightmarish life she had lived from that dreadful day on. She began to think of the childhood she had since and shuddered at the thought. Pushing everything but her wolf from her mind, she began staring again at the shimmering walls. Her thoughts drifted to better times, times before the night her home was stolen. Images of her father and mother paraded her mind. Playing in the woods, eating meals together, laughing, and smiling. These sparse memories of her family were all the happy memories she had. Suddenly, her happiness was interrupted by a voice in the distance.
“Eliana, where are you?" She heard a woman's voice faintly calling to her. "Damn," she thought, wondering how long she had been away. She raced away from the sanctuary and back down the mountain toward the voice. She did not want anyone finding her place, they would never allow her to go back. Once at the edge of the woods, after shifting to human form, she quickly tossed on the clothes she had left near a tree. This was highly intelligent as this area was out of view from the warehouse the Rogue pack was now calling home. Running toward the warehouse she could see the woman who had become her mother figure, looking warned and angry, was waiting for her. "I'm right here, Marie, I called out, running the last few yards to her."
Marie was extremely thin, with long dark hair, and nearly black eyes, her features were pointed like those of her mate. Those eerie features paid well with her personality. She was intentionally cruel and cared very little for anyone other than her mate and their son.
"Where on earth have you been?" She snapped at me as I came closer. "Just out running in the woods," I responded, attempting not to sound snarky. "Child, you know better than to be off on your own away from all of us; it's not safe," she scorned me. "I am no longer a child," I snapped back. Her eyes turned on me, staring at me with such an intensity I knew, at that instant, I should not have mouthed off. Instead, she strode up to me, stopping two inches from my face, and whispered, "Excuse me." I knew better than to respond, so I stood there silently.
Although this woman had taken me in after her mate had brought me to her from my village, she was not a loving mother but more of a tyrant, always ordering us all around except her mate, of course, as he was more wicked and demanding than her. "That's what I thought, child," she hissed as she stepped slowly back. “Now Eliana, there is cooking and washing; you had best get to it.” She spat at me. Then she sauntered away without looking back, knowing I would do as ordered.
-Marie's P.O.V.-
Ungrateful little brat, I thought, as I stalked away from Eliana. Why did he save her? The plan was for Draco to murder the entirety of the Eastwood pack, not save a Beta’s daughter and make her his own. She would be a fine servant of a chosen mate for our son Roman. "Not if she doesn't learn to listen," my wolf chimed. "You’re right," I responded to Malory, my wolf. I walked back inside this abandoned building we call home. This stay was all because that ungrateful child had turned eighteen a few months ago. Draco demanded we settle in until she and Roman were mated. "Poor Roman," I thought, "my brave, strong, cruel, relentless prince." I loved my son and wished he did not have to marry any daughter of that horrible pack that exiled me after their Alpha found his true mate.
Exile is what I got for loving the Eastwood Alpha. Neither he nor his mother took kindly to me, fighting his true mate for what was mine. Had he not stepped in, I would have killed her and not thought twice. She was nothing compared to me. I could not believe he had chosen her, or the Goddess had chosen her for him. Either way, attacking the future Luna in a jealous rage had gotten me beaten and exiled. My only crime was loving my Alpha enough that I was willing to risk it all to get him back. The day I was exiled, I warned them they would regret it.
I knew the way things ended was inevitable. But it didn't stop me from loving my Alpha with all my heart. I was willing to do anything to get him back, even if it meant sacrificing my own safety and risking the wrath of the pack. My love for him was strong enough to drive me to seek revenge on those who had wronged us. While in exile, I found the perfect opportunity. I took it without hesitation.
