Prologue

It was a Friday night and Abbie had her whole weekend planned out. She was staying at her boyfriend's house for the first time. Her relationship with James was fairly fresh, but she felt like she couldn't go a single day without seeing him.  She got out of her car and walked up the stairs, knocking on the door. Anxiously waiting for James, the door opened and the man standing in the doorway was not James. He had a pair of blue jeans on that fit him just right, a flannel shirt that was unbuttoned exposing a t-shirt underneath it and she noticed the tattoos peak out from under the sleeves. For some reason, he somewhat looked like a taller, more handsome version of James. "Umm hi?" "Can I help you?" "I'm looking for James." "He's not home yet." "Can I come in?" "Why should I let you in if I don't know you?" "I'm James's girlfriend." "My apologies. Come in." Nodding, I brushed past him and put my bag on the couch. "So, who are you?" "I'm Josh." "N-nice to meet you." Pull yourself together, Abbie. Jesus. "And you are?" "Abbie." "That's a pretty name." "Are you and James related?" He nodded. "I'm his older brother." "Oh, you are?" "Yes. Would you like something to drink?" "Sure." "What would you like?" "Wine if you have it." "Follow me." God, Abbie. Calm down. He's just an INCREDIBLY hot guy. I couldn't help but stare at him as he poured me a glass of wine. "Here." "Thank you." Abbie followed Josh to the living room and sat down next to him. "So, I..." "How old are you?" Josh asked, smiling. "22." "Ah, I'm 33." "Nice. What do you..." Abbie was interrupted by the sound of the door opening and James's voice. "Babe, I'm home. Where are you?" "In the living room." The moment James went to the living room, he nearly dropped the bag of Italian food when he saw his brother. "Josh?" His brother looked at him and smirked. "Hey little bro." "What the hell are you doing here?" "The team's on break, so I figured I could make a surprise visit." "Team?" Josh looked at Abbie, completely ignoring the irritated facial expression on James's face. "I coach the Los Angeles Kings." "Oh my gosh, no way." "Indeed. I..." "Who cares." Abbie looked at James and scowled. "Don't be rude." "I'd like to know why you're here, Josh." "I haven't seen my little brother in a while and..." "Maybe that's because you're too busy." Josh squinted at his brother and scowled. "I have been busy." "Yeah, okay." "Umm... Do you guys want some dinner?" Abbie asked, clearly uncomfortable watching the brothers fight. "I got us food." James said, scowling at Abbie. "Anything to drink?" "Another beer, do you mind honey?" Abbie smiled. "Not at all." The moment Abbie left the living room, James noticed his brother staring at her. "She's a sweet girl." "Yes, she is." "Too bad I can't get a girl like her." "Maybe if you weren't such an asshole, you would." "Excuse me?" "You heard me." "Are you threatening me?" "Maybe. What are you going to do about it?" "You mother..." "Here." Abbie handed Josh a beer can and yawned. "I'm going to go to sleep." "You don't want supper?" James asked. "No thanks." Without another word, she went upstairs and shut the bedroom door.
