Chapter 2: The Deal

1305 Words
Elena's heart hammered against her ribs as Damien's words hung in the air between them. The city lights behind her cast his face in shadow, making him look even more dangerous, more untouchable. "What kind of deal?" she asked, hating how breathless she sounded. Damien stepped back, giving her space to breathe, and moved to the floor-to-ceiling windows. He stood with his back to her, hands in his pockets, looking every inch the powerful billionaire who had built an empire that rivaled the Blackwood family fortune. "Marcus wants control of Blackwood Industries," he said, his voice calm and measured. "The merger with your father's company gives him the leverage he needs to push out the other board members and take the CEO position. He's been planning this for years." "And you're just going to let him?" Elena moved closer, her anger giving her courage. Damien turned, and the look in his eyes made her breath catch. Cold. Calculating. Ruthless. "I've been waiting for him to make his move," he said softly. "Marcus has always been ambitious, but he's also reckless. He thinks he's smarter than everyone else. That arrogance will be his downfall." "How?" "You." Elena blinked. "Me?" Damien closed the distance between them in two strides. This time, she didn't back away. She held her ground as he towered over her, his presence overwhelming. "Marcus's entire plan hinges on your family's support," Damien explained. "Your father's political connections, your family's reputation, and most importantly, the merger. If you divorce him now, especially citing infidelity with your half-sister, the scandal would destroy his credibility. Your father would pull out of the merger. The board would never trust him with the CEO position." Elena's mind raced. "But the scandal would destroy me too. My family's reputation—" "Would survive," Damien interrupted. "You're the victim. The betrayed wife. Society loves a sympathetic heroine." His lips curved into that dangerous smile again. "But there's a better way. A way that doesn't just stop Marcus—it destroys him completely." "I'm listening." "Marry me." The words hit Elena like a physical blow. She actually stumbled back a step, her hand flying to her throat. "What?" "A contract marriage," Damien clarified, though his eyes gleamed with something that looked almost like amusement at her reaction. "We divorce Marcus on grounds of infidelity, and within a month, you marry me. It sends a clear message: you're not broken by his betrayal. You've moved on to someone more powerful, more successful, more everything than Marcus could ever hope to be." Elena's mind spun. "That's insane." "Is it?" Damien moved to the bar, refilling both their glasses. "Think about it, Elena. Marcus used you for your family connections. I'm offering you the chance to use me for revenge. It's a fair trade." "What do you get out of this?" She took the glass he offered, her fingers trembling slightly. "The satisfaction of watching my nephew realize he's lost everything," Damien said, his voice dropping to a dangerous purr. "Marcus has always thought he was entitled to the Blackwood empire because of his last name. He's never had to work for anything, never had to fight. I built my company from nothing while he coasted on family money. And now he thinks he can take what's mine?" The possessiveness in his tone sent a shiver down Elena's spine. This wasn't just about business. This was personal. "There's more," she said, reading between the lines. "What aren't you telling me?" Damien's jaw tightened. For a moment, she thought he wouldn't answer. Then: "Marcus's father—my brother—died ten years ago. The family blamed me. Said I worked him to death, that my success made him feel inadequate. Marcus has hated me ever since. This merger, taking over Blackwood Industries—it's not just about power. It's about proving he's better than me." "And you want to prove him wrong." "I want to crush him." The words were spoken softly, but with such cold conviction that Elena felt it in her bones. "Completely. Utterly. Until there's nothing left of his pride, his ambition, his future." Elena should have been terrified. This man was offering her a devil's bargain, using her as a weapon in a family war that had been brewing for a decade. But instead of fear, she felt something else entirely. Power. For three years, she'd been Marcus's perfect wife, his trophy, his tool. She'd smiled and played her part while he used her family's influence to climb higher. And all the while, he'd been planning to discard her the moment she was no longer useful. Now Damien was offering her the chance to turn the tables. To be the one in control. "What would this contract marriage entail?" she asked, surprised by how steady her voice sounded. Damien's eyes darkened with approval. "We'd live together, present a united front in public. Attend events, play the devoted couple. The marriage would last one year—long enough to completely destroy Marcus's reputation and business prospects. After that, we divorce amicably. You walk away with a substantial settlement, enough to never worry about money again." "And privately?" "Separate bedrooms. Separate lives. This is a business arrangement, nothing more." But the way his gaze dropped to her lips for just a fraction of a second suggested that might be easier said than done. Elena took a long sip of her whiskey, buying time to think. It was crazy. Absolutely insane. Marrying her husband's uncle, a man known for his ruthlessness, his cold heart, his complete lack of mercy in business. But then she remembered Marcus's words: Elena's too weak to leave. She thought of Vivian's laughter, her father's disappointed face when the merger fell through, the pitying looks she'd receive at every social event as the woman who wasn't enough to keep her husband faithful. No. She was done being weak. Done being used. "I have conditions," Elena said, meeting Damien's gaze head-on. His eyebrow arched. "Name them." "First, I want Marcus to know. Not right away, but eventually. I want him to know exactly why his world is falling apart." "Agreed." "Second, my family can't be collateral damage. Whatever happens, my father's company stays protected." Damien considered this, then nodded. "Your father is a good man. He doesn't deserve to suffer for his son-in-law's sins. I'll make sure the merger transitions smoothly to a different partnership. One that benefits him." "Third," Elena took a deep breath, "if we're going to do this, we do it right. No half measures. I want Marcus to see us together and know that I've moved on to someone he could never compete with." A slow, predatory smile spread across Damien's face. "Elena Hartley-Blackwood, I think I've underestimated you." "Everyone does," she said quietly. "That's their mistake." Damien extended his hand. "Do we have a deal?" Elena looked at his hand—strong, scarred from years of building his empire, so different from Marcus's soft, manicured fingers. This was a man who had fought for everything he had. A man who understood the cost of power. A man who could teach her to fight back. She placed her hand in his, feeling the warmth of his palm, the strength in his grip. "We have a deal." Damien's fingers tightened around hers, and for just a moment, Elena saw something flicker in his eyes. Something hot and dangerous that had nothing to do with business arrangements or revenge. Then it was gone, replaced by his usual cold control. "Good," he said, releasing her hand. "Then let's begin. Tomorrow morning, you'll file for divorce. By tomorrow evening, the whole city will know that Elena Hartley-Blackwood is no longer playing the victim." Elena smiled, and it felt like the first genuine smile she'd worn in years. "Let the games begin."
