Chapter 1: The Betrayal
The champagne flute slipped from Elena's fingers, shattering against the marble floor in a crystalline explosion that echoed through the penthouse hallway. But the sound was nothing compared to the crash of her world collapsing around her. Through the crack in the bedroom door, she could see them. Her husband of three years, Marcus Blackwood, tangled in silk sheets with her half-sister, Vivian. The same half-sister who had cried on Elena's shoulder just last week about her "loneliness." The same husband who had kissed Elena goodbye that morning, promising to work late at the office. "God, Marcus, what if Elena comes home early?" Vivian's breathy laugh made Elena's stomach turn. "She won't. She's at that charity gala until midnight, playing the perfect Blackwood wife." Marcus's voice dripped with contempt. "Besides, even if she did catch us, what would she do? Divorce me? She'd lose everything. Her precious family reputation, the lifestyle she's grown so comfortable with. Elena's too weak to leave." Weak. The word hit Elena like a physical blow. She pressed her hand against the wall to steady herself, her designer heels suddenly feeling like they were made of lead. "How long are you going to keep up this charade?" Vivian purred. "When are you going to divorce her and marry me instead?" "Soon, baby. Very soon. Once the merger with Hartley Industries goes through, I'll have control of the Blackwood empire. Then I won't need Elena's family connections anymore. We can be together openly." Elena's breath caught in her throat. The merger. The one her father had orchestrated, using his political influence to smooth the way. The one that would make Marcus one of the most powerful men in the city. And he'd been using her all along. She should have seen it coming. The late nights at the office. The cold distance in his eyes. The way he'd stopped touching her months ago, claiming stress from work. But she'd been so desperate to make their marriage work, so determined to prove to her family that she'd made the right choice in marrying Marcus against their initial reservations. What a fool she'd been. Elena turned away from the door, her movements mechanical as she walked back down the hallway. She didn't run. She didn't cry. She simply moved, one foot in front of the other, until she found herself in the living room, staring out at the glittering city lights below. Her phone buzzed in her clutch. A text from her father: Emergency board meeting tomorrow, 9 AM. Your presence required. Of course. Even now, duty called. Elena Hartley-Blackwood, the perfect daughter, the perfect wife, the perfect puppet. Not anymore. She pulled up her contacts, her finger hovering over a name she hadn't called in over a year. Damien Blackwood. Marcus's uncle. The man the entire family whispered about in hushed, fearful tones. The ruthless CEO who had built his own empire from nothing, who answered to no one, who was said to have ice water in his veins and a heart of stone. The man who had warned her not to marry Marcus. Elena remembered that conversation, three years ago at the engagement party. Damien had cornered her on the terrace, his steel-gray eyes boring into hers with an intensity that had made her shiver. "You're making a mistake," he'd said, his voice low and dangerous. "My nephew is not the man you think he is." "You don't know him like I do," she'd replied, defensive and naive. "No," Damien had agreed, stepping closer until she could smell his expensive cologne, feel the heat radiating from his powerful frame. "But I know men like him. And I know women like you deserve better." She'd dismissed his words as jealousy, as family rivalry. Now, standing in the ruins of her marriage, those words echoed in her mind with painful clarity. Elena's finger pressed the call button before she could second-guess herself. He answered on the second ring. "Elena." His deep voice sent a shiver down her spine. Not a question, just her name, spoken like a statement of fact. Like he'd been expecting her call. "I need to see you," she said, surprised by how steady her voice sounded. "Tonight." A pause. Then: "The Meridian Hotel. Penthouse suite. One hour." The line went dead. Elena stared at her phone, her heart pounding. What was she doing? Damien Blackwood was dangerous, unpredictable, and according to family gossip, utterly ruthless in both business and pleasure. But right now, she needed someone who understood the game Marcus was playing. Someone who could help her fight back. She grabbed her coat and purse, taking one last look at the penthouse that had been her prison for three years. Through the walls, she could still hear Vivian's laughter, Marcus's low murmur. Let them have their moment. It would be their last. Fifty-eight minutes later, Elena stood outside the penthouse suite at the Meridian Hotel, her hand raised to knock. Before her knuckles could touch the wood, the door swung open. Damien Blackwood stood in the doorway, and Elena's breath caught despite herself. At forty-two, he was nineteen years older than Marcus, but where her husband was boyishly handsome, Damien was devastatingly masculine. Tall and broad-shouldered, with dark hair silvering at the temples and those piercing gray eyes that seemed to see straight through her carefully constructed facade. He wore a black shirt, sleeves rolled up to reveal strong forearms, and dark slacks. Casual, yet somehow more intimidating than any suit. "Come in," he said, stepping aside. Elena walked past him, hyperaware of his presence, the way he moved like a predator, all controlled power and coiled strength. The suite was massive, all floor-to-ceiling windows and modern luxury. "Drink?" Damien asked, moving to the bar. "Whiskey. Neat." His eyebrow rose slightly—approval or surprise, she couldn't tell—but he poured two glasses without comment. He handed her the crystal tumbler, his fingers brushing hers for just a moment. Elena felt that touch like an electric shock, and from the slight narrowing of his eyes, so did he. "So," Damien said, taking a sip of his whiskey, his gaze never leaving her face. "You finally discovered what kind of man you married." It wasn't a question. Elena drained half her glass in one swallow, welcoming the burn. "How long have you known?" "About Vivian? Six months. About his plan to use you for the merger? Since the day he proposed." The casual way he said it made her anger flare. "And you didn't think to tell me?" "Would you have believed me?" Damien moved closer, and Elena found herself backing up until her spine hit the window. He stopped just inches away, close enough that she had to tilt her head back to meet his eyes. "You were in love. Or you thought you were." "I was a fool." "No." His hand came up, fingers gently gripping her chin, forcing her to hold his gaze. "You were trusting. There's a difference." The gentleness in his touch, so at odds with his reputation, made something crack in Elena's carefully maintained composure. Tears burned behind her eyes, but she refused to let them fall. "I want revenge," she whispered. "I want to destroy him." Damien's lips curved into a smile that was anything but kind. It was the smile of a wolf spotting wounded prey. "Then, Elena Hartley-Blackwood," he said softly, dangerously, "let's make a deal."
