CHAPTER 21The Summoning The sky wept as Monte sprinted through the patch of woods behind Downfield Place. The pain of his decision was much harder to bear than the pinching of his boots as he plodded along, his backpack bouncing against his body. He pressed his hand against his chest pocket where his mother’s telestone was stored. He had been in search of a pair of thick socks, which had led him to Garrick’s room where the telestone, shiny and black, had sat nestled within the folds of the bed covers. It had probably slipped from Mrs. Darrow’s pocket during her last vigil, and now Monte had it.
