Diana’s pov
I think the hardest thing to accept as a child is that fairy tales aren’t real.
You learn that no Prince Charming is waiting out there for you.
No magical dress and glass slippers that only fit you and no one else.
But it’s funny, we get older and stop believing in such fantasies.
But then one day, you are old enough to start believing in them again.
However, I don’t think that I am there yet.
Reality tends to slap me in the face faster than anyone else.
So much has to be done in so little time, and I don’t have time to let myself fantasize.
I closed the door of my bedroom and walked downstairs.
Ezra was looking at me, trying to read me.
“You want to stay? I told you that we can stay here for as long as you wish. Even if that is forever,” he said as he walked towards me.
I didn’t answer him; instead, I just continued walking outside.
What I want and what must be done are two different things.
Ezra didn’t say anything but closed the door behind him, and we got into the car.
I looked at my home, maybe I will come back someday.
But now, there are things that I need to do.
“Please go to Alpha Gomez’s pack.”
Ezra looked at me, confused by my request.
I realized something: if I am going to do this, then I don’t only need enemies, but I need allies.
The Gomez family has been a close ally of my father and family for years.
One of their daughters was meant to marry my father.
But after finding out that he was in love with someone else, they called off the engagement.
They didn’t make a big deal out of it or even threaten to start a war.
Not only that, but the relationship between the two families continued to be peaceful and cordial.
The Gomez family is one of the most powerful families and has been for centuries.
Their family has produced a few Queen Lunas.
Not only that, but Derek and I were close friends, and something tells me we still are.
When the Alpha King was doing his best to turn everyone against my family, their family was the only one that stood their ground.
“It’s a waste of our time; they have closed their borders. No one comes in without an invitation or a valid reason,” Ezra explained.
I have heard that, I know that much as well, but something didn’t make sense to me.
First is Derek’s behaviour for the past few years.
Derek is one of the most intelligent people I have ever met.
His strength isn’t physical, but for the past few years, he has built a reputation for being a drunk.
His name is known far and wide, the Playboy Derek Gomez.
Yes, he has always been a little pervert who chases around a skirt, but he was also upright in a way.
He would always fulfil his duties before he went fooling around like he constantly does now.
I heard that he usually misses the monthly combat drills because he is always too hungover.
And on the days that he shows up, he is tired and barely gets through the first few rounds.
Not only that, but closing their borders completely is understandable after what happened with my parents.
And since they didn’t want to turn on my parents and spread lies about them, the Alpha King wasn’t pleased.
But I heard that they have more security around the pack borders.
Not only that, but the people in their pack are basically quarantined inside.
They don’t host events because then they would be forced to give the Alpha King the mandatory invite.
Not only that, but they also don’t attend other events hosted by other people.
The unmated wolves don’t attend events for other unmated wolves in the hope of finding their mates.
In the mandatory combat drills, they send the minimum number of warriors required, and it is always the same people.
The more I thought about it, the more it felt like it was too much even for them.
Yes, it’s best to be safe than sorry, but they were being overly cautious.
And I know that this must have been really hard for them.
The name of their pack is Fraps; it was a name given to them because of their life-of-the-party nature.
They were always hosting events, festivals, and had a rich culture.
Attending an event here with my parents was always the highlight of my day.
We stopped at the pack border, and I looked around with a frown.
An omega walked towards us and bowed his head respectfully.
“Forgive me, Alpha King, but we are not accepting guests at the moment,” the guard said.
I looked at him, his body language, and my eyes landed on the phone in his hand.
“Derek, it’s me, please come here and talk to me in person,” I spoke directly to the phone the guard was holding.
I know Derek, the moment he was told that we were coming, he would have wanted to know what we would say when they turned us back.
He didn’t answer, but the call ended, and the guard looked at me, surprised.
I need them to let me in.
There is more to this, and I need to understand what. I looked at Ezra; he might be a problem.
His father is the main reason that they have done all of this.
Not only that, but Ezra and Derek don’t see eye to eye.
Derek is flirtatious and also comes from a powerful and he knows it.
So he was never really scared of Ezra and didn’t cower to him as everyone else did.
One would say that they are very distant cousins because some of Ezra’s ancestors came from the Gomez bloodline.
“Be on your best behaviour, do you promise?” I asked him.
He looked at me as if the question I was asking him was foolish.
“I don’t like that asshole. He is going to smile at you and say flirtatious words. I don’t like it,” Ezra said with gritted teeth.
“Well then, I guess I will just go in alone. If you won’t be able to control your murderous thoughts and actions, then I can’t ask him to let you in,” I retorted.
I watched how his frown deepened, and he was glaring at me.
Even if he is the Alpha King, if he is not permitted to go in and he still does, then it’s war.
Ezra probably finds war to be tedious and exhausting.
Not only that, but people from his father’s faction could use this chance and get the old Alpha King back on his throne.
I mean, it would make sense.
The son has only recently become Alpha King, and now there is a war.
Not only that, but if I don’t go in with him, then it’s going to kill Ezra.
He will constantly wonder what I am doing and if I am falling for Derek’s charms like all the other girls.
I watched how he gritted his teeth and then looked at me.
“I will be a saint.”
He took a few steps towards me and leaned in.
“You really have pushed your luck, Dee. Tonight I will make you pay for all of it,” he whispered in my ear.
A cold shiver ran down my spine, and I did my best to hide my anticipation.
I caught Derek’s scent and looked at Ezra, who had a small smirk.
He then pulled me into his arms and placed a kiss on my lips.
Marking his territory already, but I will let him have this if it gets him to behave.
“Look at that, I see your obsession with her isn’t over yet. What would people say if they found out that their Alpha King is a love-sick puppy?” Derek asked with a smirk.
The air around us changed right away.
I will have my hands full trying to stop these two from killing each other.
I looked at Ezra, whose eyes were now starting to glow.
‘Saint, you said that you will be a saint,’ I reminded Ezra through the mate bond.
I watched how he gritted his teeth and then took a few steps back.
“Derek Gomez, we meet again. I came to personally thank you for bringing my wife back safely the other night,” Ezra said.
He didn’t smile, and his voice was cold and hard, but I wasn’t expecting a miracle.
This is as saintly as Ezra would ever get.
“Your wife? Last time I checked, the two of you aren’t married yet. How about you marry me instead?” Derek asked as he held my hand and kissed it.
Is he really not scared of dying?
