Chapter 50: Silver wolf

Diana’s pov I took my hand away from Derek. “Really? With such a cold welcome, I didn’t think you would make such a proposition,” I retorted, and he smiled. His smile was as charming as always. , And the dimples that appear every time he smiles didn’t help. “Measures have to be put in place. And you, my darling Diana, are always welcome here. The problem is the company you bring along.” He didn’t even try to hide it and looked at Ezra. He had a smirk, as if challenging the Alpha King to say something. Well, Ezra managed to keep calm and didn’t say anything. I looked at Derek, although he seems carefree I can tell something is weighing on him. He is more cautious than usual; by now, I am sure he would have said something to absolutely piss Ezra off. “Ezra here promised to behave, and I would like to ask you to do the same. I have things I want to talk to you and your father about.” I lowered my head and looked up at Derek once again. I made sure that my voice was gentle, and a few tears appeared in my eyes. This guy might be a notorious playboy, but he can’t stand it when a girl is crying. He looked at Ezra and then back at me. This is why I called him here; if someone else came, then we wouldn’t be allowed inside. “And anyway, we are tired of driving. We just need a place to stay for the night,” I added, looking at the setting sun. I watched as he looked at me, and I knew what he saw. He saw the little girl he defended when we were young. Because even I see the little boy who would tug at my ponytail and call me weird names. I don’t want to take advantage of that connection, but I have to. “He'd better be on his best behaviour. And you will only stay for the night,” Derek said after some time. “It would be like we were never there,” I said, raising my hand in surrender. They opened the massive pack gates, and we got back into our cars and drove in. Derek was quiet the whole time, but I know that look. He has warned everyone that he will let us in. But I don’t think that my little act is what allowed us to be let in. I think they did it to avoid any suspicion towards them. Eventually, they would be viewed as a threat, and the Alpha King might really declare war on them. With how secretive they are, Ezra could have their pack raided. He could say that he was scared that they were starting a rebellion, which is why they wanted no one around. In their own way, this is to help mediate things and keep the peace. It’s better not to make an enemy out of Ezra or out of me. As we got closer, I noticed that the members of the pack were waiting for us. My eyes landed on Gracie, who was still sitting in her wheelchair. You see, Derek’s younger sister was born with a weak wolf. And because of that, she hasn’t been able to walk ever since she was born. I believe that she turned around 20 years ago since she is a few years younger. And from the look of things, she has turned into a healthy young girl. We got out of the car, and Ezra mostly avoided looking at them or addressing them directly. “Is that really you, little Diana? Look how beautiful you look, you are looking like your mother,” Alpha Gomez said as he hugged me. I looked at Derek’s father; the man has certainly gotten a lot older. And from what I can pick up, he is just an Alpha by name. His eyes seem to be in bad shape, but with him, it is nothing suspicious. Alpha Gomez has suffered a lot, more than most people have. His children were murdered; they were already grown up and were about to start their own families when they were killed. And the pack decided to find him a wife, a young girl, and she gave birth to Derek and Gracie. So the man is old enough to be their grandfather. However, he insisted that she give birth via insemination. To show how kind he is, he couldn’t bear to be with someone who was half his age. His ex-wife was basically a surrogate. But the pack laws required them to be married first, so their kids are considered legitimate. After she had Derek and Gracie, the two got divorced, and the young girl got married again. She found her mate, who is in another pack. Yes, she still comes to visit her kids, but she also has another family with her husband. Such a unique story, isn’t it? , And whatever it is that made him hang on to his title for this long must be big. Because something tells me that it has everything to do with what they are hiding. “Gracie,” I said as I hugged the girl in the wheelchair. I picked it up the moment I stepped out of the car, but I couldn’t tell where it came from. I looked at Ezra, and he was wearing his glasses, so it was hard to tell where he was looking. But something told me that he had already caught it as well. Even though the hug confirmed my theory, I noticed another thing the moment I stepped out of the car. The soles of Gracie’s shoes were dirty. Why would someone who is always stuck in a wheelchair have dirt on her shoes? They didn’t waste any time; they showed us to our room. “You already know what is going on here, don’t you?” I asked Ezra. “I might have a rough idea,” he replied. He took off his glasses and sat on the couch, making himself comfortable. I sat next to him. If Ezra says that he has a rough idea, then it means that he is about 97% sure about what he is about to say. “My father once told me he was disappointed in Alpha Gomez’s daughter.” I found myself smiling. He doesn’t even want to say her name. He is like that. I have only heard him say a few people’s names before. “Why was he disappointed?” I asked him. “Well, as I am sure you know. The Gomez and my family go a long way; most of the Queens in history came from this family. And from what my father told me, so did the silver strands of our hair.” I let what he just said at this moment sink in. I knew the Gomez had power and influence, but if that is true, then it's more than I thought. “The females in this family, every once in a while, a female is born who is a pure silver breed,” he added. A pure silver breed, and when they have kids, the kids have silver strands of hair. But it seems like this only manifests if they are married into the royal family. Ezra’s father is obsessed with power; he probably wanted Ezra to marry Gracie if she indeed had a silver wolf. But when she reached a certain age and couldn’t walk, he was disappointed. That is why he set his sights on me instead. But it seems like Gracie did get her wolf after all, which explains this pack’s actions. They wanted to protect Gracie from the Alpha King. “And if she really has a silver wolf? Are you going to make her your Queen instead of me?” I asked Ezra. The aura in the room changed, everything turned cold, and the room was dark. That was all the answer I needed; I had to be reminded that Ezra isn’t like his father. Now, what do I do about this whole situation?
