21A lot of work went into organizing what was originally announced as the first Gay Olympics, scheduled to take place in San Francisco in August 1982. However, when the US Olympic Committee heard about it, it went to court to prevent the word Olympics from being used alongside the word Gay. So it was the Gay Games that brought athletes from many parts of the world to participate in a week of competitions in the city. I paid little attention to the Gay Games 1 until I was called by John Teamer, president of BWMT, to ask if I would volunteer to help during the opening and closing ceremonies at Kezar Stadium.
