22The trouble began when Al and I bought the house in Piedmont, Janice told me as we sat at one of the low glass tables near the redwood deck of the elegant Café San Marcos on Market Street. Well, first of all, it was his idea to buy it. Having just gotten my doctorate, I was more concerned about find a teaching position in the area. That’s when you ended up in Denver. My only other option was going to Cleveland, which is farther and colder. Al was furious when I told him. He wanted me to stay home and be a housewife. But that would have been the end. It was certainly a long commute! I remarked. Which I managed to make almost every other weekend and holidays. And Al came to see me in Colorado four times that first year. I think he even enjoyed the trips. God, it was a hectic time!
