23The Democratic National Convention in San Francisco was a headline event during the summer of 1984. Leaflets were distributed at meetings of the Alice B. Toklas Lesbian/Gay Democratic Club calling for volunteers to work before and during the presidential convention. I thought it might be fun to help out but my enthusiasm was dampened early on by reports I heard about the condescending attitude of party officials toward potential minority recruits.
