The gathering storm

656 Words
The night before the Harvest Moon, the atmosphere inside the Shadow Hold was taut with anticipation. In the private armory beneath the fortress, Elena stood before a full-length mirror carved from dark obsidian. She smoothed down the front of her new attire—a high-collared coat made of supple, shadow-weave leather reinforced with silver chainmail beneath the surface. It was lightweight, built for lethal movement, and bore the delicate golden emblem of the Sun-Gazer Clan embroidered across the left shoulder. She barely recognized the reflection staring back at her. The bruised, pale servant girl with hollow cheeks and timid eyes was gone. In her place stood a warrior with sharp, confident features, clear skin, and eyes that held a fiery golden ring around the pupils—the unmistakable mark of awakening royal magic. Footsteps echoed softly behind her. Kael stepped into the armory, holding a long leather sheath in his hands. "You look like a queen prepared to reclaim her throne," Kael said, stopping behind her. His reflection stood beside hers in the mirror—tall, powerful, and radiating an unwavering presence that made Elena feel completely invincible. "I don't care about a throne, Kael," Elena replied quietly, turning around to face him. "I care about justice. Damian took everything from me—my dignity, my home, and the memory of my parents whom he branded as traitors to justify taking their land. I am going back to set the record straight." "And you will," Kael said, holding out the sheath. Inside rested a ancient short sword forged from star-iron, its blade shimmering with a faint, eternal radiance. "This was forged for the leaders of the Royal Guard. It responds only to the blood of the Sun-Gazer line. Take it." Elena reached out, her fingers wrapping around the hilt. The moment her skin touched the leather wrap, a surge of golden flames licked up the length of the blade, crackling with pure, raw energy before settling into a steady, warm glow. It felt like an extension of her own arm, perfectly balanced and terrifyingly sharp. "Thank you, Kael," she said, looking up into his silver eyes. "For everything. You gave me a chance when everyone else left me to die." Kael’s expression softened, a rare, genuine warmth breaking through his stern demeanor. He raised a hand, his thumb gently brushing across her cheekbone. "You gave yourself a chance, Elena. I merely provided the tools. The strength inside you was always there, waiting for the moment you decided to stop hiding it." The heavy iron doors of the armory swung open, interrupting the moment. Commander Vane entered, bowing low to both of them. "Your Highness, My Lord," Vane announced, his tone crisp and urgent. "The strike team is assembled in the courtyard. Our vanguard scouts report that the Nightfall Pack has already begun their Harvest Moon festivities. The packhouse is heavily guarded, but Alpha Damian has concentrated most of his forces near the central pavilion for the coronation." "Is Chloe’s family present?" Elena asked, her voice turning icy cold. "Beta Thomas and the entire council are seated on the main platform," Vane confirmed. "They believe tonight marks the permanent consolidation of their power over the region." Elena clipped the sheath to her belt, the star-iron blade resting securely at her hip. She turned to Kael and nodded. "It's time," she said. Kael smiled, his silver eyes flashing with dark anticipation as he drew his own black-steel longsword. "Lead the way, Princess. Let us remind the Nightfall Pack what happens when you cross a Lycan sovereign." Together, they walked out of the armory and into the courtyard, where fifty elite Royal Lycan warriors stood in silent formation, their eyes glowing red and silver in the moonlight. The storm was finally coming to the Nightfall Pack, and Elena was leading the charge.
