The mating ceremony
The overwhelming scent of roasted meat and heavy oak blossom filled the grand hall of the Nightfall Pack, but to Elena, it felt like suffocating smoke.
For seven years, ever since her parents were lost in the border wars, Elena had lived in the shadows of the packhouse. She was not treated as a warrior or an honored member—she was a servant. Her days were spent cleaning dusty corridors, prepping feasts, and enduring the quiet sneers of high-ranking wolves who viewed her as nothing more than an orphaned outcast.
Tonight, however, was supposed to change everything. It was the night of the Blood Moon Mating Ceremony.
Elena stood near the stone pillars at the back of the ballroom, clutching a silver tray with trembling hands. Her heart hammered wildly against her ribs as the air in the room grew heavy with Alpha aura.
Damian, the newly appointed Alpha of the Nightfall Pack, stepped onto the central dais. He was tall, striking, and radiated terrifying power. Every unmated female in the room held their breath, desperately hoping to be chosen by the strongest wolf in the territory.
Elena kept her gaze fixed on the marble floor. She knew better than to dream. Outcast girls like her didn't get fairytale endings.
Then, the air shifted.
A sharp, intoxicating scent hit Elena’s senses—wild rain, cedarwood, and crackling ozone. Her wolf, silent for years, suddenly sat up in her mind and howled.
Mate.
Elena gasped, snapping her head up. Across the crowded hall, Damian’s piercing amber eyes locked onto hers. The crowded room seemed to vanish. The spark of the ancient mate bond snapped between them, so intense that Elena nearly dropped her tray.
Damian froze, his jaw tightening as he stared at her. A heavy, shocked silence fell over the entire ballroom. Hundreds of eyes followed Damian’s gaze, landing squarely on Elena in her faded, servant-grade dress.
Mutters began to ripple through the crowd.
"Her?" whispered a high-ranking wolf nearby. "The servant girl?"
"An Alpha cannot mate with an outcast!" another sneered.
Damian descended the steps of the dais, his heavy footsteps echoing across the quiet hall. He stopped five feet away from Elena. The warmth of the bond pulled at her chest, urging her to step closer, to reach out to him.
But there was no warmth in Damian’s eyes. Only disgust, humiliation, and cold fury.
He glanced back at Chloe, the wealthy, pureblood daughter of the Beta family who stood near the throne, waiting in a custom silk gown.
Damian looked back at Elena, his voice booming across the grand hall with absolute authority, cutting through her heart like a silver blade.
"I, Alpha Damian of the Nightfall Pack, hereby reject you, Elena, as my mate and future Luna."
