The eyes in the dark

662 Words
The canopy of the Dark Forest formed a dense, suffocating ceiling that blocked out every single ray of moonlight. Wrapped in pitch blackness, the woods felt entirely different from the manicured, protected grounds of the Nightfall estate. Here, the air tasted heavy with rot, damp earth, and the metallic tang of hidden predators. Elena pulled her thin, tattered dress tighter around her shivering frame, stumbling blindly over gnarled roots and sharp rocks. Every snap of a twig and rustle of leaves sent her heart racing into her throat. She was exhausted, freezing, and utterly defenseless. Without a pack link to ground her or a weapon to defend herself, she was prime meat for whatever monsters hunted these ancient trees. I have to keep moving, she told herself, blinking back hot tears of exhaustion and betrayal. If I stop, I die. But the forest seemed to conspire against her. A sudden, violent gust of wind whipped through the branches, pushing her off balance. She tripped over a thick root and tumbled hard down a steep embankment, scraping her palms and knees against the jagged stones. Groaning, Elena pushed herself up onto her hands and knees. That was when she heard it—a low, rhythmic, vibrating growl that seemed to rattle the very ground beneath her. It wasn't the growl of a normal wolf. It was deeper, darker, and possessed an ancient, terrifying weight that made her inner wolf whimper in pure terror. From the shadows of the towering pines, two glowing, blood-red eyes materialized, fixed entirely upon her. A rogue wolf, massive and scarred with matted black fur, stepped out from the darkness. It was twice the size of a standard pack warrior, drool dripping from its foaming jaws as it lowered its head, ready to strike. It let out a vicious snarl, catching the scent of her fresh, unshielded fear. Elena scrambled backward until her spine hit the solid trunk of an ancient oak tree. There was nowhere left to run. Her breath hitched in her throat as the beast lunged forward, closing the distance in a single, lightning-fast leap. She threw her hands up defensively, squeezing her eyes shut, bracing for the tearing of flesh and the end of her short life. Bang. A deafening shockwave shattered the silence of the forest. The impact didn't hit Elena. Instead, a blinding flash of silver light erupted in the clearing, accompanied by a heavy, bone-crushing thud. Elena opened her eyes slowly. The massive rogue wolf lay crumpled ten feet away, motionless, its neck snapped cleanly. Standing over the carcass was a figure so imposing and terrifying that the air in the clearing turned instantly freezing cold. He was tall, draped in a midnight-black cloak, with silver-streaked hair and sharp, aristocratic features carved from stone. But it was his eyes that locked Elena in place—pools of brilliant, luminous silver that glowed faintly in the dark, radiating an aura of absolute royalty and dominance that made the Nightfall Alpha’s power look like child’s play. This wasn't a standard pack wolf. This was a Royal Lycan. The stranger slowly turned his head, his piercing silver gaze locking onto Elena. She expected him to finish off what the rogue started. Instead, a strange, profound stillness washed over the clearing, and a deep, resonant voice echoed not just in her ears, but directly inside her mind. “Well, well,” the stranger murmured, a dangerous, enigmatic smile touching the corner of his lips. “What is a fragile little dove doing all alone in the dead zone... carrying the scent of a broken bond?” Elena couldn't speak. Her chest burned fiercely, but for the first time since the rejection, the pain didn't feel hollow. Beneath her skin, a strange, burning heat began to pulse through her veins—awakening something ancient, fierce, and entirely untamed.
