Elena pressed her back tightly against the rough bark of the oak tree, her breath hitching in her throat. The silver-eyed stranger took a slow, deliberate step toward her. Leaves crunched beneath his heavy boots, but his movements were terrifyingly fluid, like a shadow gliding across the forest floor.
"S-stay back," Elena choked out, her voice trembling despite her best efforts to sound brave. She tried to scramble backward, but the tree trunk blocked her escape.
The stranger stopped a few feet away and tilted his head. Up close, his regal features were breathtaking, but the raw power emanating from him made her inner wolf bow in instinctual submission.
"If I wanted to hurt you, little dove, you would already be dead—just like the rogue behind me," he said, his voice smooth like velvet over steel. "My name is Kael. And you are trespassing on land that has belonged to the Lycan Royalty long before your petty pack erected their borders."
Kael’s silver eyes dropped to her chest, where the lingering, faded mark of Damian’s rejection still burned red against her pale skin. A dark, dangerous flicker passed through his eyes.
"An Alpha rejection," Kael murmured, stepping closer and crouching down to her eye level. "Damian of the Nightfall Pack, I presume? He always was a fool driven by arrogance rather than wisdom."
Elena’s eyes widened. "You know Damian?"
"I know of every Alpha who rules near my territory," Kael replied calmly. "And I know that discarding a mate is a severe offense against the Moon Goddess. But more importantly..."
He reached out a large, calloused hand. Elena flinched, but he didn't grab her. He simply hovered his palm an inch above her chest, right over her heart.
A sudden, intense surge of heat erupted from her sternum. A brilliant golden light flared beneath her skin, illuminating the dark forest around them. It wasn't the faint, weak light of a servant wolf. It was an ancient, royal crest blooming across her collarbone.
Elena gasped, her eyes flying open wide as a rush of warmth flooded her blood, washing away the lingering pain of the broken mate bond.
Kael’s eyes narrowed in shock before a slow, dark smirk spread across his face.
"Fascinating," Kael whispered, retracting his hand as the light dimmed. "The Nightfall Pack treated you like an unwanted servant, yet you carry the dormant bloodline of the First Blood Lycans. Your parents weren't mere casualties of a border war, Elena. They were hiding you."
"What... what are you talking about?" Elena stammered, her mind spinning. "My parents were low-ranking trackers!"
"Your parents were royal guards who fled the capital to protect the last surviving heir of the Sun-Gazer Clan," Kael corrected, standing up and extending an open hand toward her. "Damian didn't reject a weak outcast tonight. He rejected the true ruler of these lands."
Elena stared at his outstretched hand. Everything she had believed about her life—her weakness, her low status, her tragic past—was crashing down around her.
"Why are you telling me this?" Elena asked, looking up into his silver eyes. "What do you want with me?"
"Damian and his pack discarded you to be eaten by beasts," Kael said, his voice dropping to a low, lethal hum. "I offer you shelter, training, and the power to reclaim everything that was stolen from you. Come with me to the Royal Court. Unleash the wolf sleeping inside you, and make them regret the day they cast you out."
Elena looked back toward the border of the Nightfall Pack, thinking of Damian’s cold rejection, Chloe’s mocking smile, and the years of abuse she had suffered in silence.
She turned back to Kael, placed her small hand into his broad palm, and pulled herself up.
"Teach me," Elena said, her voice no longer trembling.
