Blurb

She was his mate. His wife. The one fate carved into his bones. Before the rejection, there was warmth, quiet touches in the dark, shared breaths, a bond he never denied in private. He held her like something precious. Like something he would one day claim. Then he chose power. In front of the pack, the Alpha turned his back on the woman bound to him by fate and law. He named another as his Luna, while she stood beside him, unclaimed, unseen, erased. The bond did not break. It punished.Every heartbeat became pain. Every memory turned sharp. And the woman who replaced her smiled with perfect grace, whispering poison wrapped in kindness.Selene never raised her voice. She never struck. She simply made sure everyone believed the truth was the lie, and the lie was mercy. As the Alpha continued to hesitate, to delay, to believe he could fix everything later, the woman he once loved began to disappear. Not in anger. Not in revenge. But in silence. And when she finally walks away, tearing the bond apart to survive, the Alpha learns the cruelest truth of all. Some rejections are irreversible. And some regrets come far too late.

What was already theirs.
Lyra woke to warmth. Not sunlight. Not fire. Him. Kael’s arm was heavy around her waist, fingers curved like they belonged there. She lay still for a moment, listening to his breathing behind her, slow and even. The bond hummed softly, calm in a way it rarely was during the day. This was the version of him no one saw. She shifted slightly, and his grip tightened immediately, instinctive. “Where do you think you’re going?” he murmured, voice rough with sleep. Lyra smiled without turning. “I moved an inch.” “An inch too far.” His face pressed into the back of her neck, breath warm against her skin. She felt the lazy brush of his lips there, unhurried, familiar. Possessive without meaning to be. Her body responded before her mind did. It always did. “Kael,” she said softly, warning and invitation tangled together. He hummed, amused. “You started it.” She didn’t argue. There was no point. His hand slid lower, thumb tracing slow circles through fabric, not quite crossing the line, like he enjoyed testing her patience. Lyra reached back blindly, fingers threading into his hair, grounding herself in the solid proof of him. This was real. This wasn’t politics or rank or expectations. Just them. He rolled them over without effort, weight settling between her legs, eyes dark and focused on her face like the rest of the world didn’t exist. When he kissed her, it was deep and familiar, the kind of kiss that came from knowing exactly how far he could push before she broke. Her breath stuttered. His mouth curved slightly, satisfied. “Still mine,” he whispered, more to himself than to her. The words sank into her chest, warm and dangerous. “Yes,” she replied, because it was true. Because she believed it. His hands roamed, confident, learned, stopping just before skin turned bare. Lyra gasped softly when his mouth dipped lower, the sensation pulling a quiet sound from her throat she didn’t bother to hide. The bond flared, bright and pleased. Somewhere between kisses and half-whispered words, the world narrowed. Clothes were pushed aside, thoughts blurred, and Kael’s forehead rested against hers as he breathed her in like he needed it. She felt claimed. Wanted. Loved. When it was over, when the heat faded into something slower and softer, Kael stayed close. No rushing. No distance. Just his thumb brushing idle patterns against her hip as if memorizing her. Lyra traced the line of his jaw, watching him through half-lidded eyes. “You’ll be late again today,” she said. He sighed. “Council meeting.” “With Selene.” His jaw tightened for half a second. She felt it. “Yes.” The warmth between them cooled, just slightly. Not enough to break the moment. Enough to be noticed. “She’ll be there a lot more,” Kael added. “Things are… complicated right now.” Lyra nodded, even though unease crept in. “I trust you,” she said. He kissed her forehead, lingering. “I know.” And in that moment, wrapped in his arms, bonded and married and sure of her place, Lyra believed that was enough. She didn’t know yet how fragile enough could be. The pack house was already awake. Lyra felt it the moment she stepped out beside Kael. The air was heavier here, charged with eyes and unspoken rules. Whispers didn’t start immediately. They never did. The pack was polite like that. Respectful. Controlled. But she felt them anyway. Kael’s hand rested at the small of her back, steady, guiding her forward. To anyone watching, it looked protective. Intimate, even. She leaned into it without thinking. This was her place. Beside him. “Don’t wander,” he murmured quietly as they walked. “I’ll be pulled away.” She glanced up at him. “I won’t.” His thumb pressed once, firmer than before. A silent promise. Or a warning. She couldn’t tell. They entered the main hall together. Conversation dipped. Heads bowed. The pack acknowledged their Alpha first, then her. Luna. Mate. The woman bound to him by law and blood and something older than both. Lyra returned the greetings with practiced ease, even as Kael’s posture subtly shifted. His shoulders straightened. His presence sharpened. The warmth he’d shown her earlier tucked itself away. He was Alpha now. “Kael.” The voice cut cleanly through the room. Selene. Lyra felt Kael’s hand still for a fraction of a second before it slipped from her back. The absence was immediate. Cold. Selene approached with a smile that didn’t reach her eyes. Pale hair perfectly styled, expression calm, composed. She wore confidence like silk. Not loud. Not aggressive. Political. “Council’s waiting,” Selene said. Her gaze flicked briefly to Lyra, assessing. Measuring. “We didn’t want to start without you.” Kael nodded. “I’m coming.” He turned to Lyra. For a moment, just a moment, his expression softened. “Eat something,” he said. “I’ll find you later.” Later. She nodded, even though the word felt thinner than it should have. “Okay.” He left with Selene without looking back. Lyra stood there longer than necessary, forcing herself not to watch them go. She moved toward the table instead, fingers trembling slightly as she poured herself tea she didn’t really want. This was normal, she told herself. This was pack life. Still, something twisted low in her chest. “She’s impressive,” a voice said casually beside her. Lyra turned. One of the elder females. Neutral. Observant. “Selene?” Lyra asked. “Yes. Smart. Knows how to move a room.” A pause. “The council trusts her.” Lyra smiled politely. “They trust Kael.” “Of course.” Another pause. Sharper this time. “But power likes mirrors.” The words lingered after the woman walked away. Hours passed slowly. Lyra stayed busy, spoke when spoken to, fulfilled her role. Yet every time she caught sight of the council chamber doors, her chest tightened. Kael didn’t come out. Selene did. Once. Twice. Each time composed. Each time untouched by doubt. By the time Kael finally emerged, the hall was quieter. He looked tired. Controlled. Distant. “You’re still here,” he said, like he hadn’t expected her to be. “I said I’d wait.” His eyes flickered. Guilt? Relief? She couldn’t tell. “We’ll talk tonight,” he said. Not now. Not here. “I need to handle a few things.” Lyra nodded again. She was getting good at that. As he walked past her, Selene followed close behind, speaking low enough that only he could hear. Lyra caught nothing but the way Kael inclined his head to listen. The bond stirred uneasily. For the first time since she’d known him, Lyra felt something unfamiliar settle in her chest. Not fear. Not anger. Distance. And it scared her more than anything else ever had.
