23. Runaway

I knew the King lost his mind in that night, twenty years ago. I heard that story, that everyone tells.

But how many know the truth about what happened that night? I can tell you that few people know for sure.

My mother was one of them.

She was the royal healer at that time. And she was close to Queen Noelani.

She was a wonderful woman, my mom! This is what everyone tells me. This is what I remember. She died when I was 3.As for my father..she never talked about him..no one knows who he is.

My name is Amaya Blackwood and today is my birthday. I'll be 23 in 6 minutes.

This was the day I've been thinking about since I was 10.The reason? Well, the reason is that little notebook my grandmother gave me 13 years ago. It was from my mother. Next to it was a letter telling me how much she loves me and also to not open the notebook till today. I think it was a diary. It was hard to keep away from it. But whenever I tried to open it I failed.

Today is the day I will finally get to know what's inside of it.

I went into my room, get on the bed and tried to open it. To my surprise this time it worked, it's open! So I start reading. Maybe is something about my father?

Dear Amaya,

First of all, happy birthday! I hope this day finds you well! I wish I could be there with you, but it seems like life has other plans for us. Just always remember that I love you!

I know you wonder what is this about. I'll explain everything to you here.

The reason I wanted you to open this now, on your 23rd birthday, is because this is the time when you will be needed and when you will need help! I want you to leave the Water Kingdom as soon as possible. It won't be safe for you anymore!

With teary eyes and hands trembling I put the diary next to me.

Who is Evolet Zephyrine?

Zephyrine..?this sounds familiar.

"Amaya! Amaya! You need to go!Now!" my grandmother worried voice came.

"He found out about you, Amaya! You are no longer safe here! Go! Find her! You will be safe as long as you're with her! Find Evolet! "

"Gran! Wait! What's happening? Who found what about me? What are you talking about? "

"There's no time Amaya! You will find out soon! Take the Book of Life with you! Everything you need to know is there!" she said giving me the diary from my mother while pushing me out the door.

"What book?! This is just a simple diary! A blank one!"

"Blank? Good! That means there's still time! Go! Go to the Fire Kingdom! She is there!"

"Who Gran? Why should I leave you?"

"Amaya, please! Have faith! This is all it takes! Trust me! Trust your mother! She died protecting her! Now is your time to keep her safe!"By now I was already outside. She closed the door leaving me alone in the dark in the backyard.

I heard a loud bang in the front door and my desperate grandmother's voice imploring me to run.

So I run! Even if I didn't know the meaning of all of this!

I've been running for hours. Everything around me was unfamiliar. My legs were killing me.

It was so cold and dark, the only light was coming from the moon. I was thirsty and l and all my body were in pain. I feel like I just was struck by a horse. But my grandmother's words made me keep running. 'He found out about you! You are no longer safe here! Find her!'

My lungs were burning. I couldn't breathe, so I just stop. I should be safe enough now. Maybe if I can rest for few minutes. I sit down on the ground, checking the diary. I still got it. I put it back next to my chest, under my handmade jumper. My lids were closing, I was so tired. At least is no snowing.

I jump at the sound of a deep voice.

"Who's there?" It was a man. I open my eyes and realised it was already morning. It seems like the sleep won the fight and I fall asleep. I can tell he is a water elemental by his look.

"Uh..i...I'm a messager! Yes! King Kai sent me to give this letter to the Fire King. "I said showing him the letter from my mother, hoping he will believe me.

"Yeah, sure! And I'm the Goddess of the Forest!" he said sarcastically. "What are you doing so close to the border? You are not a message, that I can tell. Maybe you are a spy!"

"A spy?Me? Do I look like a spy? I am a water elemental. I already told you that I'm a message on my way to deliver His Majesty letter!

"Ok! That's enough! I'll take you back to the palace! We'll see if you are truly a messager when we got there!" he said stepping closer to me.

"And if I am? Are you willing to lose your life just because of a harmless girl like me? We both know that if I'm right, and you are the reason this letter won't arrive at the Fire King in time, King Kai will kill you on the spot!" I said getting up and showing him the letter again.

He was silent for a minute, deciding what to do.

"But you also can help me get there faster and I'll make sure the King will find about your kindness ."

A grin appeared on his face and he nodded.

Thank Goodness he falls for my lie.

"I'll show you to the border, as I can't go any further! Come messager, my horse is few minutes from here!"
