I wake up in my bedroom in Alpha Gannon’s basement. I see Susan sitting in a chair next to my bed, I see an IV in my arm, and I feel pain in my stomach, but it’s lessened from before I passed out. I have no recollection of how I got here, but I assume Gannon saved me. I attempted to say, “hi,” but it came out as more of a croak because my throat is so dry.
Susan looks up from her iPad, “oh hey Halyn, good to see you awake. Let me get you a drink.” Susan leaves and returns with a covered cup with a straw. I drink a couple large pulls before letting go of the straw. “Is that better?”
I nod, “thanks Susan. Is the human okay?”
Susan nods before explaining, “thanks to you, he will live, but he has a long road of healing ahead. You know you saved him right?”
“He saved me too by hitting the Delta with a branch when he had grabbed my neck.” I clear my throat before continuing, “did he get bit deep enough to…convert him, to a...a werewolf?”
Susan sighed, “it’s possible. Doc said it’s deep enough, so we should know based on how quickly he heals. If he has a wolf, he will heal quicker than if he remains human.”
I nod my head. “Ya know, even after he was injured, he was ready to fight. Initially he froze, but made the mistake of looking the wolf in the eye. The Delta Warrior probably saw it as a challenge. I feel bad he was attacked.”
Susan licked her lips and said, “it wasn’t your fault Halyn. You saved his life.”
“You don't understand. I’m afraid the Delta followed me here. I’m not sure why he was obsessed with me, but he was a Delta from the Red River pack in Alaska.” I attempted to sit up, but felt the pull in my stomach and laid back down on my pillow. “What if it’s my fault he was attacked in the first place? My scent was probably out there because I had been on that trail yesterday. I don’t know what the Delta’s intentions were by coming here, but I hope Alistar didn’t take what was meant for me.” I looked down sheepishly at the quilt covering me.
“Did you need to get up? If so, please let me assist you. Your wolf is healing you quickly, but the lacerations to your stomach were pretty deep.”
“Naw, thanks Susan, but I think I’m okay for now. You should go home to your family though. I’ll be okay.” I began to pick at the blanket but Susan put her hand over mine.
“You are family Cousin Halyn. Travis is with the baby, and I snuck upstairs to feed him before you woke up. Luna Cat likes having Colson here to spoil anyway. Travis may officially be in charge, but it’s doubtful he is caring for him.” Susan laughed.
“What’s so funny?” I asked.
“I was laughing at the thought of Cat and Paulina attempting to spoil Colson. He is one lucky little pup to have so many people who love him. Between Luna Paulina, Cat, Gannon, Travis, me, and the whole pack, we have no shortage of love or attention for our pup.” Susan was still smiling at me as she finished talking.
“Don’t you worry someone might hurt him since he could be a future Alpha?” I asked with concern.
“Right now, with this pack, no. With another pack, I may. I would certainly be more concerned outside our gates,” Susan explains.
“I’m glad things are changing. It used to be that every Alpha child had a bullseye on their back because everyone was in competition.” I cleared my throat again and could feel my eyes getting heavy. “Thank The Creator those ways are changing. I’m sorry Susan, but I’m really tired.”
“That’s good, you need to rest. Here is a walkie talkie in case you need anything, and I’ll take this one upstairs. Let me know if you need help. Please don’t try to get up alone the first few times. We are staying in my old room tonight so I’ll be close.” Susan kissed me on the head, shut off the lamp, and headed for the door.
In a sleepy voice, I answered, “Thank you Cousin Susan. I love you.”
Susan smiled, nodded, and shut the door as she left.
