At first, they hesitated. Then they glanced back and saw many more other people getting closer. Suddenly, their feet started running for them. It was a short underground tunnel and at the end of it was a small door. The man said something and it opened. It led to a room, or more like a hall. The room was simple, it did not have much. From it, they entered a bigger room. Inside were other people.
“Where are we?” asked Louis since Asya was left speechless. She was still recovering from that dangerous experience. She could not believe her eyes. Underground life with weird looking people.
“This is the New York institute, where the guardians of this city operate.” The man said. “By the way, I am Meliorn”.
Meliorn had light brown gear on with a white symbol in the middle of what looked like an up-down latin s. He was tall with dark hair, around nineteen. There was something about him having similar ears as Asya.
“Guardians?” asked Louis “Who are those people and why did they attack us?”
“They are a part of the Shade, corrupted fairies that side against us.” Said Meliorn.
“Fairies? What are you talking about? You are crazy. Asya what do you say we leave?”
Asya was just standing there speechless, mouth open, looking around the place. All of the people looked similar to her. Something about their ears with extended upper part. They were just walking around, probably working. Many people looked at them but no one gave them any attention. That made Asya feel more comfortable since they can talk in peace. There was something about them that attracted her.
The whole place was covered in vines and everything was wooden except for something in the middle. In the middle, was a giant map with some technology she had never seen before. And below it, was a small drawer with spears made of iron. Even Meliorn had one in his hand while talking to them. They were simple and plain, around 2 meters and made out of iron. There were letters written on them. “May the defenders cleanse this world of darkness”.
“Why does this place look familiar? Where have you taken us? Are you messing with out minds? And why do these people look like me?” questions poured out of Asya.
“Would you like to take a seat and allow me to explain?” asked Meliorn.
“No. Explain right here and right now before we leave.” Louis was getting impatient and sick of whatever stories Meliorn has been telling them.
“Very well. Please come in this room so no one can hear us.” And they went in another smaller room.
“The stories about fairies are true. We exist and all these people are you are part of them. There are corrupted fairies called the Shades and us, normal good fairies. We live in another dimension of this world which you can go to through the portal you saw in the forest. It is opened with a special tool. Usually, there is nothing but this time there was a line which means that someone portaled through not long ago. All portal activities are registered. Weird. This one was not. Anyway, in the other world we are ruled by a king and a queen. There is an army and I am a part of it. Every male fairy is a part of it. Part of the army stays in the kingdom, and a part stays in places like these and guards the cities. I, along with these people, guard New York. We register every fairy attack and troops are sent to stop it. We saw you were attacked and we went to help. We do not mean any harm. Forgive me if all this sounds crazy. And sorry your first impression had to be based of surviving” Explained Meliorn.
“You are insane. Stop telling us childish stories we are not kids.” said Louis “Let us go home Asya”
When Meliorn realized he could not talk to Louis, he turned to Asya who was just listening with wide eyes and looking at the people through the window.
“I know you Asya. All the strange people going to your house, they are sent by us to check on your safety. For some reason, our whole lives we have been protecting you and there must be a reason. Do you not know anything about this?”
“How do you know so much about my life, you creep?” said Asya. “I only know none of this is real. An illusion”
“No, I swear I am not lying” protested Meliorn.
“Answer my question. Have you been following me?” Asya got impatient.
“Of course not. I know you are very important and we check up on your life.”
“Then stop coming to my house. How do we leave this illusion?” asked Asya.
“It is not an illusion, it is all real. The dark fairies are still outside. You can go once they leave”
“Can I talk to Louis? In private?” she asked
“Yes, of course” said Meliorn as he picked up his spear and left the room not knowing what to say.
Louis was standing there listening with his eyes wide. After Meliorn left the room, they sat in silence. Both of them had been left speechless by this situation. They were starting at the ground just thinking about everything, until Louis broke the silence.
“That guy does not seem friendly, he keeps lying to us. I do not like him or this place. It is like a prison”.
“I do not understand these stories but what if he has a point? I do look similar to the other people here. And the “people” as you called them, did not look like normal people to me, they had something on their backs. Wings, I think. So, what if it is true?”
“Are you out of your mind? This is all fake. If fairies did exist how come no one talks about them or knows anything about them, it is scientifically proven. Fairies do not exist!”
“You do have a point. Fairies do not exist. I do not know what this place is and I bet those people outside are just normal people trying to help us”.
“I told you we’re just wasting time lets head back before it gets dark”.
“I do not know if he will let us go” said Asya anxiously.
“If he does not, I will make him” Louis spoke confidently.
They exchanged eye contact one last time and head to the door when Meliorn comes in.
“Wait-“ Meliorn suddenly runs in through the door. “I overheard a bit, I am sorry it is just my powers. I can help you Asya, only if you let me though”.
“How will you help me and with what?” asked Asya
“Give me your hand, I will show you”. He said as he extended his hand.
“Do not trust him Asya. He only means bad things” said Louis.
“He was nice to us, so do not worry, I can handle this” said Asya as she reached out.
Meliorn gently took Asya’s hand in his and suddenly her vision went blurry.
