“Give me a second to get ready” Arryn was still in his pyjamas.
She closed the door and let him change. Suddenly, she got a flashback from yesterday.
Meliorn had left them in front of the training rooms. Asya stood frozen like she had seen a monster.
“You must be the new girl. I am Arryn”.
“Um, hello. I am Asya”.
“Nice to meet you Asya. From which island do you come from?”
“Actually, I come from earth. I do not know if that-“
“I am joking, I do not really care” he turned back and called a girl “We can continue later, Lily. I have to go now”. Lily smiled and blew him a kiss. Then he turned to Asya.
“Alright, let’s go”.
Asya started walking towards the training rooms, but Arryn gently caught her hand.
“There is no fun in that. Come” he said.
“But Meliorn said-“
“Yeah, but that is Meliorn”.
They went down the path. At the end of the path were streets. But weird thing was that there was not a single car. The streets were made of dark asphalt, outlined with white lines. On both sides was a sidewalk made of the same bricks as the paths to the castle. Asya was wondering what they would do on the streets. Arryn whistled and a car came. Or what looked like a car.
“It is a fairy car. It is an upgraded version of your cars since it can fly and get us anywhere faster than anything” Arryn said. “Take us to the Sacred Timberland” he said to the driver.
Asya did not bother asking what the Sacred Timberland is. Arryn was right, the car was faster than mundane cars. It did not even feel like the car started and they were already at the place. Arryn paid the driver and they got off. Asya could see that it was a forest of oak trees. They went through the forest. It was night time, so they could not see much. Arryn was used to the forest and knew exactly where he was going. Asya followed him along. They reached a lake.
“This is Hinliers Lake” Arryn went to the edge of the dock and sat down facing the lake. Asya sat down next to him.
Above the lake were tons of fireflies. It was really peaceful. The full moon was shining right at them.
“The reason I brought you here Asya is to explain to you the situation. We have been at war with the Shade for at least a hundred years and the whole protecting the fairies thing is getting boring. I am tired of training and fighting for my life. I am sure you must have been through a lot and thought you needed the break”.
“Thanks, but how do you know so much about me?” Asya asked.
“Well, you have been here for three days and there were whispers about a fairy coming from the mundane world which has never happened before. I checked on you every day, but you were always asleep. Sleeping so deep, lost in your own world”.
Asya blushed. Arryn was checking on her every day. He cared for her. But he had a girlfriend.
“Is this really a good idea?” she asked
“We are safe within the walls, do not worry”.
Aryn stood up and put off his shirt. He was certainly a pro at working out. Apart from his handsome face, he had huge abs and slightly muscled arms. Then he jumped in the water. Asya looked at him.
“Join me”.
“But I do not have a bikini”
“Come with whatever you like. Keep your clothes on if you would like”.
Asya took off only her jacket and went in the water. The water was cool on her body. Arryn splashed her with water and she splashed back. She had not felt happy in a long time. They continued their nights playing and talking in the water.
“I am back. Let’s actually train today” Arryn said, coming out of the room.
Asya realized she had been staring and smiling at the wall thinking about last night.
“Why are you so happy?” asked Arryn “excited that we are finally going training?”
“No, it is personal” said Asya, but even she did not know why she was smiling at that.
They went down to the training rooms. It was early in the morning and a lot of fairies were at the front of the training rooms, preparing to start. As Asya and Arryn passed be, many greeted them, but many were whispering too. She overheard whispers like: “That is the new girl. What is she doing with Arryn?” And so on. This did not bother Asya a lot, since she was used to it.
Next to the training rooms was another smaller building. It looked older and more decorated.
“What is that?” asked Asya.
“Those are the training rooms for the people with powers. I will take you there at night when everyone is asleep” Arryn told Asya, smiling.
They continued down the training rooms. A small hall led to them, and on the left side was a room for gear and on the right, a room for weapons. She could choose from any gear or weapon she would like. The gear could be golden, silver, wooden, with or without a helmet, gloves or a shield. Weapons started from bow and arrow, to daggers, to chakrams, to swords. They skipped the armor room and went for the weapon room.
“Everyone chooses a weapon with which they fight for the rest of your life. Choose yours”
Asya looked around the weapons. The bow and arrow would take a lot of aim practice, she thought. The chakrams seemed cool but hard to control. Swords were too simple and there was one left. She went to the daggers slowly and picked them up. They were sharp and short. They fit well in her small hands.
“Excellent choice. Now come”.
Arryn pointed to Asya where she was supposed to stand. He showed her how to hold the daggers standing in a place. He also took other daggers.
“Just follow my moves. Ready?” asked Arryn.
“Whenever you are” she said confidently, but on the inside, she knew she was feeling nervous.
First, Arryn explained how the daggers work. Then he started doing slashes with the daggers. From the right side to the left, from bottom to top and the opposite. Asya was following him carefully. Then he started moving with his legs and arms at the same time. He showed her some tricks. When they got tired, he told her some tips. They were training for four hours already.
“Let’s try to fight later” he smiled “Go easy on me” he said with a sarcastic tone and let out a small laugh. “Let’s go get lunch now?” he asked after.
“Of course. Let me change first though.” said Asya.
They left their weapons and went up the castle. Both of them went in their rooms. After Asya finished, she could not see Arryn anywhere and went to his room. There were whispers in the room. Asya stood in front of the door and eavesdropped.
“… I saw it with with my own eyes” said Meliorn
“She is waiting, I have to go” Arryn told him.
“Report back to me as soon as possible” said Meliorn as Arryn got up to leave the room.
Asya quickly got to her room panting.
“Asya, are you ready?” asked Arryn.
She took a minute to leave her room. She acted as if she had not heard anything and gave him a polite smile. They went down together to have lunch.
