Chapter 1: The Experiment
In front of a tall gray building Isaac and I pull up in his very old gray-looking Beatle. It is a terrible car but he has a small allowance so I just don't pay attention to the cramped, ratty, interior. We park in the parking lot, and I slowly unfold myself as I get out of the car. I feel like the clown getting out of their circus car.
We walk up to the building but then I stop and freeze. Isaac is the same age as me, fourteen. We both are poor but he hangs out with the “cool people,” as some may call it.
Then there's me. My name is Jessica Bonatelli, a nerd, who is only five foot tall, socially awkward with anxiety and allergies. One day I am told I’ll snap out of it but we all know it won’t be in the next couple of years, or at least probably will never happen. I am always afraid of what people think of me. Their thoughts on me are not great since poor is not something people look up to. Blue jeans that are ripped at the knees, a black tank top with white dots all over, a jean jacket with a hole in the pocket, and yellow hightops with white laces that are covered in dirt. My whole look just screams out I’m poor, don't come near me. Or at least that's what the older kids tell me. It seems like people either want to kill me or date me. Isaac tells me I’m a threat to the women with my green eyes, light blonde and brown, thick hair that's always up into a messy sock bun.
Isaac Tahara is trouble, but he protects me. I guess that’s what matters. Standing six one he is always very intimidating to other people. His clothing choices also just tell it all, dark black ripped jeans, a black sweatshirt, and black high tennis shoes with a white base like he always does. He tells me it's his way of showing dominance. i***t. He has light blue eyes and jet black hair that looks like he just woke up out of bed. He never listens to me when I tell him to fix it.
“Jess you are going to be fine,” Isaac says to me in a soothing way.
“Can you help me?” I ask, terrified. I clutch my folders tightly, cutting off the blood flow to my fingers.
Isaac replies, “why?”
“Because I can’t move,” I snap at him, my mind going all over the place telling me not to do this. I feel as though a monster is tearing at my insides. Isaac sighs and goes and pushes me to the building. “My mom says that she doesn't know what's going to happen to us!”
“Jess it won’t be that big of a deal,” the monster loosens up in my stomach and I finally can feel like I can breathe again as he rubs my arm trying to calm me down. “Lets just go in, all right?” Isaac asks.
“All right,” I say in response. I stand right outside the door so I can watch who all is here and another car pulls up with two people inside.
Noah Riley and Delannie Tapper. Noah is a decent kid who is only a jerk to her because secretly he loves her when I have no clue why. Delannie is the school bully. She has bullied me since pre-school and it has elevated ever since. She is something I probably should not say. She has always been a jerk to everyone, including me. Especially me. She thinks that she is better than me because I am basically a midget and she is five’ four. I think the reason I think that is because she always makes sure to tell me when she gets the chance. She hates me and I hate her. It doesn't help that she has always been a rich, popular, makeup wearing, snake.
She is wearing a dark green sweater that is placed at her shoulders. She has a short black skirt, with black tights that you can see through, and black very high heels. She wears it with confidence. Telling everyone she’s rich and the best. She flips her blonde wavy hair that goes down to the middle of her back and her light gray eyes that can stare into your soul. Medusa, an evil beauty.
Then Noah, a fifteen year old boy who has always been and looks like trouble. He seems to be wearing a black t-shirt and black pants that have zippers on the knees. Never understood that style. His dark black eyes and sandy brown hair is what makes his handsome face.. He runs after Delannie and grabs her arm. He yanks it back so that her face looks at his.
“Delannie, we need to talk!” Noah exclaims.
“I have nothing to say to you” Delannie replies
“What did I do to you?” he asks.
“Listen Noah! If you don’t know then I certainly am not going to tell you,” she storms into the building giving me a dirty look that makes me think maybe I turned to stone. Noah follows and smiles at me.
As Noah and Delannie go inside another car shows up carrying a nine year old and two older boys, fifteen and fourteen. The youngest is Luke who I babysit for. He is a cute little kid but has a bunch of sass and for some reason he loves me. He has hazel eyes and light blonde hair. He looks terrified as he squeezes his older brother's hand.
The older brother is Johnny. The definition of tall dark and handsome. Dark black hair and gorgeous light blue and green eyes. I have had a crush on him for as long as I can remember. He always talks to me but he has told me a couple times that I remind him of the sister he never had. Hurts everytime. I’m friend zoned. On the other hand he was the one that had taught me how to pick locks. He always wears respectable clothes, like the beige khakis, and a blue checkered button up, with dark black tennis shoes he wears now.
The middle child or Edward is a big bonehead. He is as stupid as they come and he can’t even come up with a good comeback, but he does try. He has more of a hard face, pitch black greasy hair that goes just above his shoulders and black eyes. He is a big trouble maker. Let's just say the police know his name and address. He has been arrested for vandalism, stealing, but “he’s only been arrested for assault twice.” That’s what always says to me, like it’s going to make the situation better. He can never convince me enough. He has chains all down his neck and piercings all over. He wears a black shirt with a skull logo, pants that have rips on the knees, and black high top shoes.
Then last but not least the youngest. At seven years old he has already been caught stealing five times. Other than that he is a very sweet kid. His light blonde hair, and ocean blue eyes make him look like a sweet boy. He dresses like Johnny. Green tinted khaki pants, a dark royal blue button up, and a white tie.
“Johnny, what's going to happen inside?” Luke asks Johnny. Johnny bends down and tells him “Listen Luke, it's going to be alright. It's just for a few weeks.”
“Yeah and then they’re going to abduct you and steal your brains,” Edward tells Luke.
“Edward!” Johnny yells. “Was that necessary to say?”
“Yeah!” Edward exclaims.
“Can we just go in? I think I might be ready.” Luke mumbles.
“Yes we can,” Johnny replies.
To not see Johnny I pull Isaac inside before I can embarrass myself anymore then I probably already have.
As everybody goes inside the crowded building my mind fights like it has two sides. One side says you can do this and the other one says just give up. The next thing I realize is that a lady is telling us all to go inside the big room on the side. We sign our names. A difficult task when your hand is shaking. I pass the desk and walk to a seat.
There is one girl who I recognize. She looks at me with dark, swollen, teary eyes and she mouths out the word ‘leave’. She seems young and scared like she is being forced to be here. I don’t like this. Something stirs inside of me. I can’t do anything to help this poor girl. Her face is drawn of all color, she looks dead almost. Maybe a zombie, and her lips shudder each time she looks at the leader. Her face is round and seems to be pretty but caked in snot and tears from her sobbing.
“I'm sorry I don’t know what is happening,” I whisper. She chuckles tearfully and voice cracking, almost like I made a joke and it’s the highlight of her day.
“You'll see soon enough,” she replies. She shakes and doesn't stop. She is terrified, but I don’t think she will tell me why so I just need to drop it.
As we sit into the beautiful gold trimmed room, that seems even more crowded with students, a lady in a knee high skirt with a face that has resemblances of a donkey that’s had a little too much to drink, comes and sits down in the large chair that is encircled by the others, then she starts to speaks.
“Hello children” she says very softly. “My name is Amanda Robin, you guys shall address me as Miss Robin, since most people just call me Robin. You are not here for any plain reason besides the fact that you guys have done many bad things. Troublesome kids as you might call it. I don’t want to bore you but…” Edward jumps up and interrupts her. Classic Edward. Jokes either too big or too small
“Too late!” he yells and then dies of laughter. Too big.
“I see,” Robin stares at him for a moment. “Anyway in each of your papers it explains what is going on. I want you to read the page and then raise your hand when you are done.”
I look at the page to see it has a beautiful bird on the top of it, a Robin, and start reading inside my head.
This is mostly safety precautions but you are about to enter a non reality. If you don’t know what it is, it is a type of juice that puts you to sleep. There are chances that if you go too far into the non reality then you will not be able to get out but you should not have to worry about this since it will only be a week. Since you are troubled kids you are our test subjects. This is the first time that we have done this so naturally we are unsure on a couple things. The way you can go farther is by going back to your beginning state. You will have to die to go back. Each death brings you back one-hundred loops of reality. You shall only be in this simulator for a week. If you die in the fake reality you just come back to here. This should not be too difficult. Each of you has a simple person you are paired up with and those should be the only people you encounter. If you encounter others that is not necessarily a bad thing it just could mean a glitch in the system. You will have new personalities, new thoughts and memories. You will not remember all of this, only little bits and pieces here and there and sometimes a sensation that you’re getting it wrong. Any questions?
I raise my hand and notice that Robin is standing right in front of me. A tingling runs down my spine as though ants are crawling underneath my skin.
“Yes?” Robin asks.
“Umm…is this legal?” I ask.
“What is your name?” Robin asks. Her voice sounds cold and harsh. She is obviously avoiding my question.
“Jessica, but I prefer Jess” I respond nicely as I can but still shaking from head to toe.
“You, Johnny, and Luke are not on the list,” she says as she looks at the clip board that her long boney fingers are wrapped around. Her dark black eyes fix on the clipboard and I start to feel very nervous, then before I know it Robin says, “Johnny come here!” I watch and stare at him as he walks over. When I snap out of it Robin says, “You two still want to be in this?”
“Sure” Replies Johnny. He smiles at me and without thinking I nod my head even though my mind is telling me not to do it. Her smile turns to a sneer. Something is very wrong.
I walk into a room that looks like it would be in a hospital. It has the smell of two men in a gym. I walk over to the bed and sit down, waiting. It feels like hours, days, months, or maybe even years. Robin walks into the room carrying her clipboard. Her donkey-like face is smiling as she searches through drawers. She grabs a piece of paper with a Robin on the top of the paper. Then she puts it down and then grabs something that looks like a shot. Then filling with thoughts about how I might die gives me goose bumps up and down my arms and legs. I open my mouth but no words come out of it. The monster erupts inside again and I start to feel fear. While I am waiting for a really long time I say over and over in my head I don’t want to be here.
“Now are you sure that you want to do this?” Robin asks politely.
Before I can say no or get me out of here I blurt out, “of course!” I then second guess myself. Robin puts the needles in my arm and the green-blue colored liquid pours through. I then started to feel calm and collected.
“Hey Jessica, I will just say, Make sure that you don’t fail me. I have been cast aside by my business partners and now this is payback to the families that have ruined me. Now in return I have taken something….important to them,” Robin says with a serious face. She mouths out the word that I believe is you, but why would I be important.
“I changed my mind,” I mumble sleepily.
“Too late,” she sings creepily. I try to get up but everything goes black.
