Chapter 1: The Feast Of Hyaenas
The air in the subterranean bunker smelled of damp concrete, iron, and the sickly sweet stench of gangrene.
Seraphine Vance leaned her back against the frost-covered wall, her breath blooming in faint white clouds before dissipating into the shadows.
Every tremor in her chest felt like a shattered glass slicing through her ribs.
Her left leg was a useless lead weight, wrapped in soiled, blood-crusted bandages that had long ceased to serve any medical purpose.
Out in the ruins of the surface, the sky was a bruised, shimmering violet a perpetual twilight brought on by the dimensional rift that had cracked open three years ago.
The World System had descended like an
unforgiving parasite, bringing with it ethereal blue notifications, brutal monster waves, and an icy apocalypse that froze half the continent in a matter of months.
Seraphine adjusted her grip on the rusted iron pipe resting across her lap.
Her knuckles were bruised, her fingers stiffened by the biting cold.
System Interface, she thought silently.
A dim, translucent blue panel flickered into existence before her eyes, its hue pale and erratic, mirroring her dying life force.
[STATUS]
Name: Seraphine Vance
Level: 14
Class: None
Title: Scavenger
HP: 18 / 210 (Critically Injured / Infection Spreading)
MP: 2 / 50
Subspace Storage: 0.1 / 50 Cubic Meters (Empty)
"Empty," she whispered, her voice a raspy thread.
Her spatial inventory, once filled with canned goods, purified water, heating packs, and low-grade mana crystals, was bone dry.
She had poured every drop of her blood, every ounce of her cunning, and every system point she earned into keeping four people alive in this frozen hellscape.
Heavy footsteps crunched on the gravel outside the bunker door.
Heavy, deliberate, and free from the panic of someone being hunted.
The reinforced steel door swung open with a screech.
Three figures stepped into the dimly lit chamber, their shadows stretching long across the frost-dusted floor.
At the center stood Julian Drake.
Even after three years of hell, Julian managed to look clean.
He wore a heavy leather coat lined with thermal fur—a jacket Seraphine had traded two weeks' worth of rations and her own body heat to scavenge from an abandoned military outpost.
Beside him was Charlotte, Seraphine’s half-sister, wrapped in a plush wool scarf, her cheeks flush and healthy.
Behind them loomed Mark, Julian’s brute of an enforcer, holding a heavy-duty shotgun.
"You're back," Seraphine rasped, trying to push herself up against the wall.
Pain shot up her thigh, forcing her back down with a quiet gasp.
"Did... did you find the supply drop in Sector 4? Is there any mana gel left for my leg?"
Julian didn't move toward her.
He didn't rush to her side as he used to when they were engaged before the sky broke.
Instead, he stood with his hands tucked into his pockets, looking down at her with a look of mild, lingering annoyance.
"There was no supply drop in Sector 4, Seraphine," Julian said smoothly.
His voice was calm, entirely lacking the affection he used to fake when he needed her to open her spatial storage.
It was an ambush site, a nest of Frost-Crawlers.
Seraphine’s heart cold turkeyed in her chest.
"An ambush? But... you were gone for twelve hours, where have you been?"
Charlotte stepped forward, clinging to Julian’s arm with a delicate, possessive grip.
We were at the Eastern Citadel, dear sister, Julian traded the high-tier Mana Core you brought back last night.
We secured two permanent entry passes into the inner warm zone.
Seraphine froze, her mind raced, piecing together the numbers with horrifying speed. "Two passes? But... There are four of us. Me, you, Julian, and Mark."
"Mark doesn't need a pass," Julian replied coolly. "He was hired by the Citadel guard captain as a perimeter scout this morning.
That leaves two passes."
"Two..." Seraphine stared at Julian, then at her half-sister.
"Julian... I bled for that Mana Core.
I nearly lost my arm fighting that Rank-2 Alpha beast while you three waited in the tunnel! You promised... you promised we would go into the Citadel together!"
"And how would you walk through those gates, Seraphine?"
Charlotte chimed in, her tone dripping with sweet, fake sympathy, look at you, your leg is rotting, you can barely stand.
The Citadel guards take one look at infected survivors and shoot them on sight to prevent outbreaks.
You’re a liability. "Charlotte..." Seraphine’s eyes stung with hot, furious tears that froze on her eyelashes before they could fall.
"I shared every morsel of food I found with you! When my father died during the first week, I swore I’d protect you!"
"And you did!" Charlotte sneered, dropping her sweet facade.
Her lip curled in disgust, "You did your job, but you're useless now.
Your Subspace is empty because you couldn't find any more food drops.
Your combat strength is gone, Julian needs a partner who can socialise in the Citadel, not a crippled scavenger who smells like corpse-water."
Seraphine looked at Julian, her chest heaving as rage fought against the creeping numbness in her limbs.
"Julian... say something, tell me this is a joke."
Julian sighed, taking a step forward, he reached down and unholstered a combat knife from his belt, the knife Seraphine had gifted him on his twenty-fifth birthday, right before the world shattered.
"Thank you for everything, Seraphine," Julian said softly, his eyes dead and unfeeling.
"Your Subspace ring ability was truly a blessing for us during these three years,
but every tool has an expiration date."
"You monster," Seraphine spat, her voice trembling with a mixture of terror and white-hot hatred.
"I gave you everything, I starved so you could eat!"
"And that was your choice," Julian said.
He didn't hesitate, in one swift, practiced motion, Julian stepped in and slammed his boot onto Seraphine’s broken leg.
An agonizing scream tore from Seraphine’s throat as the shattered bones ground together.
Before the scream could clear her lips, Julian bent down, grabbed her collar, and drove the combat knife deep into her chest, right beneath her sternum, puk.
The cold metal cut through cloth, skin, and muscle, plunging directly into her heart.
Seraphine’s eyes went wide.
Blood welled up in her mouth, metallic and hot, spilling over her chin onto her threadbare jacket.
"Let's go," Julian muttered, wiping his blade on her sleeve before turning his back on her.
"The Citadel gates close in an hour, and the smell here is getting unbearable."
"Wait, check her pockets one last time!" Charlotte said, her voice fading as they turned toward the door.
"Make sure she didn't hide any high-grade crystals..."
"She has nothing left, Charlotte, she's completely spent."
The heavy steel door slammed shut.
The latch clicked into place from the outside, locking her inside the dark, freezing tomb.
Seraphine lay on the concrete floor, her vision fading into a hazy red.
Blood pooled beneath her back, warm against the frost. Her lungs filled with fluid, each gasping breath yielding less air than the last.
Three years, she thought, her hatred burning brighter than the cold dying inside her.
Three years of suffering, of eating leather and rat meat, of shielding them from monsters... just to be thrown away like trash.
If I had a second chance... if I had only looked out for myself... I would have butchered them with my own hands.
A flashing crimson system notification flared weakly in the dim corner of her dying consciousness.
[SYSTEM WARNING: Host Vital Functions Ceasing...]

[Hidden Protocol Triggered: 'Temporal Reversion / Regression Arc']
[Error: User holds Temporal Anchor...]
[Initiating System Reboot...]
Seraphine couldn't read the words.
The darkness swallowed her whole, pulling her down into an abyss deeper than the frozen earth.
Her heart gave one last, feeble twitch, and then... absolute silence.
BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!
Seraphine bolted upright with a violent gasp, her hands clawing at her chest.
"Julian—!"
Her lungs filled not with the stench of rot and concrete, but with the warm, rich scent of lavender air freshener and freshly brewed coffee.
She sat frozen, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.
Her skin was dripping with cold sweat, she frantically clutched her chest, searching for the deep, fatal puncture wound under her sternum.
Nothing, smooth skin under a soft cotton pajama top.
She looked down at her legs, her left leg, which had been a blackened, rotting stump mere seconds ago, was fully whole, smooth, and painless.
She flexed her toes, she kicked her legs out, no pain, no frostbite, no bandages.
Seraphine gasped, her eyes scanning her surroundings in total disbelief.
She was sitting in a queen-sized bed inside a spacious, sunlit bedroom.
Golden sunlight poured through clean glass windows, illuminating pristine hardwood floors, a designer wardrobe, and a large wall mirror.
It was her luxury apartment in downtown Seattle.
The apartment she had sold for pennies right after the sky cracked open three years ago.
"No... no, this is impossible," she whispered.
She grabbed the smartphone resting on the bedside table.
The screen lit up with a crisp, digital display:
10:14 AM — May 12, 2026
Seraphine’s breath caught in her throat.
May 12, 2026.
The apocalypse—the dimensional rift, the World System integration, the eternal winter, and the monster invasions—did not begin until June 12, 2026.
She was exactly 30 days before the end of the world.
A soft chime sounded directly inside her mind, clear and unmistakable.
[WELCOME TO THE WORLD SYSTEM PRE-INTEGRATION PHASE]
[Unique Title Detected: 'The Regressor']
[Retaining Partial Consciousness & System Authority...]
[Personal Ability Unlocked: 'Infinite Pocket Dimension' (Level 1)]
[Personal Ability Unlocked: 'System Exchange Hub']
A brilliant, semi-transparent blue status window expanded before her eyes, far brighter and more complex than the crude interface she had possessed in her past life.
[STATUS]
Name: Seraphine Vance
Level: 1
Class: Unawakened
Title: The Regressor (+100% Experience Gain, Past-Life Knowledge Intact)
HP: 100 / 100
MP: 100 / 100
Subspace Capacity: 10,000 / Unlimited Cubic Meters (Time-Stasis Active: Items inside will not spoil or age)
System Credit Balance: 0 Points
Seraphine stared at the numbers, ten thousand cubic meters... with time stasis?
In her past life, a five-cubic-meter spatial inventory made someone an invaluable asset to major guilds.
Ten thousand cubic meters at Level 1 was enough space to hoard an entire logistics warehouse.
She sat on the edge of the bed, resting her face in her clean, unblemished hands.
The horror of her death was still fresh in her mind—the cold knife, Julian’s indifferent eyes, Charlotte’s mocking smile.
Slowly, her hands lowered, her face, once soft and forgiving, hardened into a mask of pure, icy resolve.
"Thirty days," Seraphine murmured, a cold, terrifying smile touching her lips.
This time, there would be no self-sacrifice, no sharing rations with ungrateful snakes. No dying in a frozen hole while traitors walked into the Citadel.
"Julian... Charlotte..." she whispered to the quiet room, her eyes gleaming with dark intent.
"I'm going to buy every grain of rice, every bullet, and every drop of fuel in this city.
And when the sky breaks... I'll watch you starve.”
