There was a knock on the door.
“Enter.”
Jon Corbett entered, saluted. “Good morning, Lieutenant. Colonel Macey has requested I escort you to the parade ground.”
“Then I guess we’d better not keep him waiting.”
“Not a good idea, ma’am.”
Damascus turned to the left, picked up the cap, and passed a polishing glove over the peak. Placing the cap on her head, she removed the glove.
“Lead the way, Sergeant.”
“Yes, ma’am.”
Corbett turned, began the walk to the parade ground. Damascus matched him step for step.
“It’s a strange feeling, knowing that when I next make this walk, I will no longer be a lieutenant.”
