Chapter 1: The Alpha Rejected Me
The first sign that something was wrong was that I could smell rain before the clouds appeared. Mooncrest was gathered in the ceremonial clearing, and the night should have smelled exactly as it always did during the mating ceremony: burning cedar, crushed herbs beneath hundreds of restless feet, and the faint sweetness of moonflowers growing along the edge of the forest. Instead, the air changed. My wolf stirred beneath my skin. Something is coming, she whispered. I became nervous that I tightened my fingers around the edge of my cloak and tried telling myself that she was just being dramatic. It was easy to do before I saw Alpha Damien. He had stood near the Moonstone with the elders gathered behind him, dressed in black as though the ceremony belonged to him more than it belonged to the Moon Goddess herself. Though it did. But Everything in Mooncrest seemed to bend around Damien Blackwood. Eventually, Conversations started to lowered when he entered any room. Warriors straightened when he passed. Even wolves old enough to remember his father looked at him with the careful respect reserved for dangerous things. Though I had known him for most of my life. But that should have made him easier to look at. But it didn't. Rather, Damien had changed over the years in ways I hadn't expected. He used to be the boy who race me through the eastern woods, But now had disappeared somewhere between responsibility and bloodshed. Leaving behind a man who rarely smiled and never explained himself. His shoulders had broadened. A thin scar now crossed one of his knuckles. His face had settled into angles that made strangers look twice and sensible women look away. But in my case, I was neither a stranger nor sensible. *** Unfortunately, "You're staring again." Said Lena I nearly jumped. She stood beside me with her arms folded. Amusement was written all over her face. "I am not." I said "You have been looking at him since you arrived." Said Lena "I've looked in his direction." I said "Rosalie." She called I gave her the sort of look that should have ended the conversation. But it didn't. Rather, Lena smiled wider. "One day, Alpha Damien is going to catch you." She said jokingly. "Doing what?" I asked "Looking at him like you've already imagined the names of your children." Heat climbed into my face. "You are impossible." "And you're blushing." "I'm cold." I Said She looked toward the clear night sky. "Yes, It's Freezing and it's absolutely unbearable." I ignored her. *** The mating ceremony took place once every year, during the first full moon after the autumn equinox. Wolves who had reached the proper age gathered before the Moonstone to discover whether fate had chosen someone for them. But most years, nothing happened to me. So I had stopped expecting it. The idea of finding a fated mate had always sounded beautiful when I was younger. And that was because my mother used to tell me stories about it before she died. She told me how a wolf could recognize home in another person's scent, how the bond was supposed to feel like discovering a missing piece of yourself. But as I grew older, I learned that stories were kinder than reality. I realized Mates fought, Mates betrayed one another, some they never met at all, and For some they apparently, stood ten feet away from you without looking in your direction. *** Damien was listening to Elder Marcus speak. His expression was composed, but I knew him well enough to notice the slight tension around his mouth. He hated ceremonies, and crowds even more. Though I shouldn't have found that comforting. "Do you think he'll find his mate tonight?" Lena asked, Interrupting my thought. The question was casual, but something in my stomach tightened. And so I shrugged. "Maybe." I replied "You've thought about it." Didn't you? She asked! "Everyone has thought about it." I replied immediately. "Not like you." I turned toward her. "Lena." And so she lifted both hands. "Fine, I said nothing." she said defending herself playfully. Though I couldn't stop myself from looking at Damien again. Because this time, he was already watching me. For one suspended second, the clearing disappeared. The people around him has left. There was only him. And Damien's eyes were darker than the night around us, and I had the strange, uncomfortable feeling that he had been looking at me long before I even noticed him. His expression didn't change. And that's because it rarely did. But something moved behind his eyes and vanished so quickly that I wondered whether I had imagined it. *** Then Elder Marcus struck the ceremonial staff against the ground. The sound rolled through the clearing. Everyone went silent. "Tonight," the elder began, his voice carrying easily through the trees, "we stand beneath the same moon our ancestors once stood beneath. We ask for nothing that is not freely given. We claim nothing that is not ours to claim." The words were familiar. And that was because I had heard them every year since childhood. Still, my wolf shifted uneasily. So, I pressed my palm against my stomach. What is it? I asked But she didn't answer, so I ignored her. Soon, the first wolves stepped forward. One by one, those participating approached the Moonstone and allowed their blood to touch its surface. And if the Moon Goddess had bound them to another wolf, the stone would react. Sometimes it glowed. And sometimes a scent changed. Sometimes two people simply looked at each other and knew. The first pair that started found nothing. Neither did the second. Later on as the ceremony continue a young warrior named Callum discovered his mate was a woman from the neighboring pack, and the clearing erupted into applause when she burst into tears and threw herself into his arms. I smiled, And that was because there was something beautiful about watching someone receive the one thing they had been hoping for. Then my name was called. "Rosalie Vale." My feet suddenly felt heavier. Lena squeezed my hand and wished me "Good luck." I almost laughed, but didn't. I stepped away from her and made my way toward the Moonstone. The clearing seemed larger from the center. I could feel hundreds of eyes following me, though perhaps that was only my imagination. I Rosalie Vale had never been particularly important in Mooncrest. I wasn't the daughter of an influential family. I had no title, no extraordinary strength, no position worth envying. I was just simply Rosalie. And yet, as I approached the stone, I noticed my wolf became restless. Rosalie. I stopped. Her voice was different. Not nervous. Certain. What? I asked But she had already gone silent again. Elder Marcus offered me the ceremonial blade. I accepted it. The blade was small and silver, its handle carved with the symbol of the Moon Goddess. I had watched hundreds of wolves use it over the years. It had never seemed dangerous. Tonight, it felt cold. "Your hand," the elder said gently. I placed my palm above the Moonstone. For a moment, I hesitated. Then I dragged the blade across my skin. A thin line opened. One drop of blood fell. Nothing happened. I exhaled. Of course nothing happened. Why would it? I started to pull my hand away. Then suddenly the Moonstone cracked. The sound was so sharp that I flinched. A murmur moved through the crowd. And so I stared. Silver light spread beneath my palm. Once! Twice! Then the entire stone began to glow. My wolf surged forward so suddenly that my knees weakened. A scent hit me immediately. Cedar! Rain! Smoke! And something warmer beneath it, something so familiar that my body recognized it before my mind did. No... My head snapped toward the crowd. Damien had gone completely still. For the first time in my life, I had watched the Alpha of Mooncrest lose control of his expression. Shock crossed his face. Then something else, something much worse. My breath stopped. Mate, my wolf whispered. The world narrowed around that single word. Then I stared at Damien. He stared back. The bond slammed into me. There was no gentle realization. No gradual understanding. One moment I was standing before the Moonstone, and the next it felt as though something invisible had reached into my chest and pulled a thread tight between us. Damien! My mate! My body reacted before I could stop it. Every sense sharpened. And I could hear his breathing from across the clearing. I could smell the cedar and rain clinging to his skin. And I knew, with a certainty so deep down it frightened me, that if I closed my eyes, I would still know exactly where he was. A strange happiness rose inside me. But it was brief. Damien took one step backward. Though the movement was small. To the extend almost no one would have noticed it. But i did. My happiness disappeared so quickly that it left me dizzy. The clearing had gone silent. Everyone understood, and so everyone was waiting. I searched Damien's face for something, infact anything that would tell me I had misunderstood his reaction. But he looked at me as though the Moon Goddess had handed him a weapon. "Damien," I said. His name came out softer than I intended. His jaw tightened. That was when fear began to replace the wonder. He should have come toward me. That was what mates did. Or, he should have smiled, or touched me, or at least looked relieved. But rather, Alpha Damien Blackwood looked like a man standing at the edge of a cliff. "Alpha," Elder Marcus said quietly. Damien didn't move. The silence stretched. I could hear whispers beginning behind me. "Is it really—" "The Moonstone—" "Rosalie?" "Her?" I wished I couldn't hear them, I wished I couldn't hear anything. Damien finally walked toward me. My wolf pressed eagerly against my skin despite the warning crawling through my body. She didn't understand what was wrong. She only understood that our mate was close. And I wanted to believe that was enough. When Damien stopped in front of me, I had to tilt my head slightly to meet his eyes. For a moment, neither of us spoke. Then his gaze dropped to my injured palm. Something flickered across his face. Concern. But It was gone almost immediately. "Rosalie," he said. The sound of my name in his voice nearly broke me. And I hated that. I hated how quickly my body responded to him, how badly I wanted to reach for him, and how ridiculous it suddenly seemed that I had spent years pretending I didn't care about the way he looked at me. This was why. Some part of me had been waiting. "You're my mate," I whispered. But his eyes closed. Only for a second. And when they opened again, the man I knew was gone. "Yes." The word should have made me happy. But rather, it felt like a door locking. I frowned. "Then why are you looking at me like that?" His gaze shifted past my shoulder. Toward the elders. And toward the crowd. And for the first time, I wondered whether everyone could feel how badly something was going wrong. "Damien?" "Don't." I blinked. His voice was low, but there was a warning in it. "Don't call me that right now." he Warned! The words landed harder than they should have. I took a small step back. His eyes followed the movement. Something passed between us then, quick and strange. Pain! Not mine! His! I felt it through the bond. My wolf went quiet. "Why?" I asked. Damien didn't answer. Elder Marcus moved closer. "Alpha, the Moonstone has spoken." "I can see that." he replied Casually His tone was sharp enough to make the older man pause. I stared at Damien. My confusion was turning into something colder. "Say something," I demanded. But his gaze returned to mine. There it was again. That look! Fear! Not fear of me. Fear for something I couldn't understand. And then, just as quickly, he buried it. "You want me to say something?" I swallowed. "Yes." I replied immediately. He looked around the clearing. At the wolves who had gathered to witness fate. When he spoke again, his voice carried. "I reject the bond." For several seconds, I didn't understand what he had just said. The words existed. I heard them. But my mind refused to arrange them into meaning. Someone gasped. My wolf made a sound inside me that I had never heard before. I stared at him. "What?" I asked in surprise Damien's face remained unreadable. "I, Damien Blackwood, Alpha of Mooncrest Pack, reject Rosalie Vale as my mate." The world changed. There was no other way to describe it. One moment, I was standing beneath the full moon with hundreds of people watching. The next, I was trying to remember how breathing worked. "No." The word slipped out before I could stop it. Damien's eyes flashed. "Rosalie—" "No." I shook my head. This wasn't happening. There had to be some mistake. "You can't just—" "I can." His interruption was quiet. That somehow made it crueler. I looked around us. No one looked comfortable anymore. Lena had pushed through part of the crowd, her face pale. Elder Marcus looked as though he wanted to intervene but knew better than to challenge his Alpha publicly. And Damien? He looked at me. Only me! As if none of them mattered. That should have comforted me. But instead, it made everything worse. "Why?" I asked him. I didn't care that everyone was listening. And I didn't care that my voice had changed. "Why would you reject me?" Something moved behind his eyes. For one terrible second, I thought he was going to tell me the truth. But then his expression hardened. "Because being my mate doesn't make you worthy of being my Luna." The silence afterward was unbearable. I heard someone whisper! Then another! The words reached me from different directions. Unworthy. Rosalie? What was the Moon Goddess thinking? I wanted to turn around and tell them to stop. But I couldn't. I was still looking at Damien. He had said it. Not them! Him! The boy who had once climbed through my bedroom window at thirteen because I had been crying after my mother died. The young man who had taught me how to throw a knife properly. The Alpha who had stood beside me at my father's funeral and said nothing because he knew words would make it worse. That man was gone. Or maybe he had never existed. "Say it again," I whispered. Trying not believe what he had said earlier. But rather Damien's brows pulled together. "Rosalie." "Say it again." I insisted! "Don't do this." I said with pain within me. A laugh escaped me. It sounded wrong. "Don't do what? he asked! Ask yourself why you just humiliated me in front of the entire pack?" I replied angrily. His gaze darkened. There was anger there now. Good! At least one of us could feel something. "You don't understand what's happening." "Then explain it." "I can't." he said Or you Won't! I fired. His silence answered me. That hurt more than his rejection. Because suddenly I understood something I hadn't wanted to see. He had made this decision before tonight. Maybe not about me specifically. Maybe he hadn't known I would be his mate. But he had decided there were things I wasn't allowed to know. And whatever those things were, they mattered more to him than I did. My wolf trembled inside me. He is lying. I almost laughed again. Of course he is. I looked at Damien one final time. "Fine." His head lifted slightly. I could feel the tension in him through the bond. It was strange. Even after everything, the connection between us remained open. I could feel his anger, his restraint, and beneath both of them, something that didn't belong with rejection. Pain. I hated myself for noticing. And i hated him more for making me notice. "If you don't want me," I said, forcing my voice to remain steady, "then you don't have to pretend this means anything." His eyes changed. Just slightly. But I saw it. "Rosalie—" he called But I stepped away. The bond pulled. Pain tore through my chest. I sucked in a breath and nearly stumbled. Damien moved forward instinctively. His hand caught my arm. The moment his fingers closed around me, everything stopped. The connection between us surged violently. His scent surrounded me. For one humiliating heartbeat, I remembered every stupid thing I had ever wanted from him. A hand held beneath the table during dinner. His mouth against my forehead. And a home that felt like ours. I pulled away before the thoughts could destroy me. Damien didn't stop me."Congratulations, Alpha," I said. My voice sounded steadier than I felt. "You got exactly what you wanted." Then I turned my back on him. The crowd parted. No one spoke to me. And no one tried to stop me. That was almost worse. I walked away from the Moonstone without knowing where I was going. I only knew I couldn't remain there another second. Behind me, I heard Damien say my name. I kept walking. "Rosalie." This time, his voice was louder. I stopped. Against my better judgment, I turned. He was still standing near the Moonstone, surrounded by elders and pack members who suddenly looked very far away. For a moment, the entire world seemed to shrink back to just the two of us. His face was unreadable. But the bond between us wasn't. I felt it. A sharp, unbearable pull. Not relief! And not freedom! But Pain! My wolf lifted her head. He didn't mean it. I looked at Damien. Then at the distance between us. "Then why did he say it?" I whispered. He couldn't hear me. Maybe that was for the best. I turned and continued walking away. I had almost reached the edge of the clearing when pain suddenly exploded through my chest. I gasped. My hand flew to my heart. The rejection bond. It was supposed to be breaking. I could feel it. The invisible connection between Damien and me twisted violently, stretching until it felt as though it would tear something apart inside me. I braced myself against a tree. Around the clearing, voices rose in alarm. Then— Nothing. The pain stopped. I opened my eyes. Slowly. And Carefully. My wolf was silent. Not weak. And not broken. I searched for the emptiness everyone described after a rejected bond. It wasn't there. Instead, I felt him. Damien. Still connected to me. And stronger than before. I looked back toward the clearing. At the exact same moment, Damien's head snapped up. Our eyes met across the distance. And for the first time that night, I saw something that looked dangerously close to panic on the Alpha's face. Not because Damien had rejected me. But because somehow the mate bond had refused to let me go.
