The Siren's Song

286 Words
The ocean has always called to me. I feel her raw power, though she's still out of sight. Hoping to witness the sunset, but longing for night. Lessening the thoughts that were more contrite. Crossing the dunes, I kick off my shoes. The sand is still warm from the unrelenting sun. Sandcastles left as remnants of all the day's fun. The day may be ending, but for me, it's just begun. The last vestiges of sunlight are riding each wave. I step to the water's edge to hear the ocean's voice. The wind in my ears drowning out any other noise. Closing my eyes, my soul begins to rejoice. Mother, mother ocean, I heed your call. A land-locked pirate with only rum left for comfort. Pale from the lack of sun, I'm easily sunburnt. Laying down in the sand, I open up about my hurt. My eyes still closed, I see the sun faded on my eyelids. A time when all lights go off so the turtles can lay eggs. I stay without moving til the tide touches my legs. Feeling like I've confided enough of my guilt and regrets. Never more at peace. My suffering released. Getting up, I walk the tide line as it swells up the beach. Remembering days of Beach Boys songs. Being washed by the tide into oyster covered rocks. Struggling with undertow due to hurricanes off the coast. But my love off it all is the thing I feel most. One day, she will take me home. To the depths where those with a heart for the ocean belong. She draws me like a siren. Unable to resist her song. Knowing she'll still be here when I'm buried and gone.
