The Program
Light shining behind the curtains woke me from a strange dream. I was in the middle of a forest, and it seemed like I was only five years old. I was crying, surrounded by red. That's all I could remember.
I rolled over in my bed and sighed. Today was the first day of a program I signed up for. The directors of this program would give us free schooling for as long as we wanted to participate. Nobody gave us too much information about the program, but they explained we would be going to a new age school. I was told to be there on Friday, and classes would start Monday. Not having the money for college, I jumped at the opportunity.
Rolling out of bed, I stretched. My bed was so comfortable. I just wanted to curl up in the silk sheets and go back to sleep. I looked at the clock on my nightstand, stating it was already seven o'clock in the morning. Orientation was at noon, so I decided to take a long bath to relax myself.
As I walked into the simplistic bathroom, I looked in the mirror. I really needed to get out more. I'm sure I'd find a boyfriend easily. Auburn hair fell to my lower back, with bangs that slightly hid my left eye. My eyes were a soft golden with specks of green and blue. I never understood the color of my eyes, and had yet to meet anyone with ones even similar to mine.
Standing at five foot three, I always had others teasing me. Always about getting something off the top shelf. My body gave me some looks though, thin, with curves in all the right places. Never really had a guy to experiment with though, so I didn't think too much of the whole s*x thing.
I hooked my thumbs under my straps and let my gown fall to the floor. Nothing I could complain about. I always kept myself well shaved everywhere and had a perfect complexion. I threw a couple towels onto the rack and started the water. The sound drowned out any uneasiness I had minutes ago. As the water filled, I brushed my teeth and flossed.
Sliding into the tub, I let out a long sigh. It was so nice to soak sometimes. Laying in the tub, I closed my eyes and tried to recall more of the dream. I could see a tall figure, looked like a man, covered in blood. My eyes shot open. Why I would dream of something like this was beyond me.
Realizing I had lost track of time, I quickly cleaned myself and let the water drain. Grabbed a towel for my hair and twisted it into a poof on my head. I dried my body and turned back to my room. The clock said eight thirty.
Mentally berating myself for taking longer than I wanted, I walked to my wardrobe. A matching set of pink lace underwear sat at the front, so I decided to put it on. Not like anyone was going to see it, but it felt nice to have the option open. I giggled to myself as I put on a low cut ocean shirt and pulled on some dark hip hugger jeans.
My stomach growled as I finished dressing. Deciding not to fix my hair today, I tossed it up in a high pony tail. I did my makeup quickly, just some eyeliner, mascara, and some eye shadow. After making sure I looked half way decent, I grabbed my purse, phone and keys. I thought I'd stop off at a restaurant to grab a quick bite before I headed to the campus. Out the door I went, with more confidence than I expected. Today will be a great day!
I jumped in the car and sped off to the nearest place serving breakfast. I walked into the restaurant to be seated, and seen a small girl with a plain black dress approach me.
"Hello, welcome to The Bull Ranch. I am your hostess Emily. Would you like a booth, chair, or bar seat?" Emily smiled at me.
"Just a chair, smallest table preferably." I replied.
"Right this way." She turned on her heels and led me to a 2 seat table with chairs. Emily handed me a menu. "Your waitress will be with you shortly."
Emily retreated to the front doors again, and soon a woman with an apron came to the table. I had looked at the menu but nothing looked really appetizing. Ordering the simple breakfast of eggs, sausage and pancakes was always a safe choice. The waitress took my order to the chef, and soon brought my food. I ate quickly and paid. Now that I wouldn't embarrass myself from hunger pains, I got into my car and raced toward the program address.
As I reached my destination, I was in shock. This place was enormous. So many buildings, all nicely put into one campus. If I hadn't known better, I'd have thought this was a castle. A large gate stood at the entrance with a small speaker on the driver side. I drove up, clicked CALL and waited.
"Hello! Welcome to the Knight Campus. Are you faculty or student?" A sweet young girl's voice came from the speaker.
"I am Sophia Delrosa, student." I replied into the box.
"Ah, yes. Please come in, Sophia." I heard a faint click and the gates started opening.
I drove my car slowly through the gates, everything around was phenomenal. The road looked hand paved, with red and white bricks. Even the topiary around was in pristine condition. All the small bushes were trimmed evenly across the top and the larger ones were cut into intricate designs. As I passed, I noticed a horse, bat, elephant, and wolf. This had to take a long time to look this immaculate.
I got to the main building and shut off my engine. There were so many cars here, all very luxurious. My beat up little sedan stuck out like a sore thumb, and instantly made me feel embarrassed. People going to this school must be from rich families. Second guessing walking in, I sighed.
The front doors opened, and a model-like woman started walking my way. I looked around, nobody else was outside. She walked straight up to me, holding a packet.
"You must be Sophia, welcome to the Knight Campus! My name is Claire." It was the girl from the speaker earlier. She seemed over enthusiastic to be here as a welcome party. "Everything you need to know about your courses here is detailed in this welcome packet. I do hope you enjoy your stay here."
"Wait, stay? Do you mean I will be living here?" I asked astonished.
"Why, of course you will sweetie! The Knight Campus has enough room for all our students, and to participate in this program, you need no outside distractions. Now, will this be a problem?"
"No. No, of course not. I just didn't know. I wasn't told much before I came here." I said looking at the packet. Hopefully it will have some more answers for me. Guess that's why we were coming in on Friday, to get acquainted with the school grounds before classes started.
"Perfect! We are all so happy to have you here. Please, come join the rest of your classmates in the ballroom." Claire led me inside, through mahogany double doors, into a large room that was perfect for gatherings.
I glanced around the room, taking in my surroundings and my classmates. The outer wall was lined with french double doors, stained glass above each door. Red curtains streamed down each window. Columns were designed at each corner of the room in a roman style. I couldn't help but be overwhelmed by how alluring this room alone was. As I scanned my eyes down, I seen the other classmates. Most everyone in the room was staring at me though. I started to feel very self conscious.
Everyone in the room looked like they should be on the "world's most beautiful" list. Nobody had a hair out of place, and they were all so graceful. Maybe they were staring because I looked unkempt compared to them. As I was mentally beating myself down, I hadn't noticed a man walking toward me.
"Hello, I am Markus. I couldn't help but notice you walk in. And might I add, you smell amazing." Markus stated with a small smirk. He was tall, around six foot four probably. Perfection. Light skin, sapphire eyes that seemed to stare into your soul. He had a muscular but thin body type, with a short faded hair cut.
"Well, thank you. I'm Sophia." I looked down, he was so beautiful, he shouldn't waste his time with me. Suddenly, I felt his hand on my chin, lifting my face to meet his eyes again.
"You're too beautiful to not hold your head high." He was hitting on me. I giggled.
"With all the women in here," I looked around at the women that had to come from a magazine. "I have to believe that you're messing with me."
"Never." He gave me a wide smile. His teeth were flawless. "Everyone's staring at your beauty."
As I was about to respond, a hand touched Markus' shoulder. Another man, just as tall was standing by his side now. He was almost too beautiful to look at. His hair was dark, looked like it must have been cut by the best cosmetologist in the world, not too long but not too short. Muscles protruded from under his skin tight suit. He stood with so much pride, you could almost feel it rolling off him.
"Markus, I see you have introduced yourself already, do me the honors?" The man's voice was silk.
"Of course, sir. Sophia, this is Prince Kieran. Prince, this is Sophia." Markus' voice wasn't as confident as it was when he was flirting. He seemed to shrink next to the prince.
"Prince?" I asked. "Well, it's a pleasure to meet you."
"The pleasure is all mine, Sophia." The prince bent down and lifted my hand to his mouth. He lightly kissed the back of my hand and gently lowered it back to my side. He was such a charmer. As he looked up, I finally seen his eyes, soft golden with specs of green, blue and red. I'd never seen another person with eyes close to mine, now I meet one and he's a prince.
"If I may, what are you prince of?" Genuine curiosity danced in my words.
"I-" As the prince started to reply, someone over speakers cut him off.
"Welcome to the Knight Campus, everyone." I looked for the source, a quirky man was standing at a podium on the far side of the room. "I am the dean of this university, Johnathan Knight. You are all participants of an experiment about the day to day life of a college student. On top of your classes, you will be required to keep a journal of your day to day experiences and write how you felt with as much detail as you can. You are able to write about all experiences and anything you learn about other students or staff members. You may start writing in the journal any time between now and the first day of classes. We are conducting this experiment to see how close students get to one another and their teachers."
Director Knight continued on about sleeping arrangements, course schedules, and everything covered in the welcome packet. My mind was elsewhere, on a certain prince. As I wondered about Kieran, I overheard two women talking.
"Do they all know about us?" A tall woman with fiery hair asked.
"No, I think this is more an experiment to see if we can coexist..." A smaller girl said back. They were walking away, so I couldn't hear anything else from their conversation. Coexist? What in the world did they mean by that?
"I look forward to seeing you around, Sophia." Kieran's smooth tone broke through my thoughts.
"Yeah, I do too your highness" I stated back with a small bow.
"Please, just call me Kieran, and no need for you to bow to me." He put his hand on my shoulder. He didn't act like a prince. I'd always heard stories of the egotistical princes, but this man was the opposite. I gave him a big smile and he turned to join a few other guys that had gotten closer to us, pulling Markus along with him.
"Sophia?" Claire was standing beside me with a cautious look. She had a book in hand, and a large piece of folded paper. "This is your journal, when you get close to the end, don't hesitate to let a staff member know and we will get you a new one. You aren't required to write a whole page each day, just whatever you feel we should know, and make sure you write down all you learn about classmates. That is specifically what you are here for."
"Oh, thank you so much, Claire" I received the book and paper.
"That is a map of the full campus as well. Your dorm building has been marked. The dorm president will show you to your room and give you a tour when you get there. You can go any time you'd like." She slowly walked off toward other students.
I unfolded the paper, and took a long look to try to memorize the grounds. It would take a bit to get used to, but my dorm was on the far east side of campus. I had a bit of a walk, so I decided to go there now to see what I was in store for. As I started walking out the doors, I turned to take one last look at my beautiful classmates, which was a mistake. More than half were staring at me again.
Walking out the front, I expected to see the vehicles all parked along the road, but there were none. My car was even gone. Oh well, we were asked to stay on campus grounds anyways. I'm sure it'll be in some fancy garage somewhere. So, I started walking east toward my specified dorm. This entire place was something out of a fairy tale.
Wide open fields were in sections for students to have some space. Each section was big enough to have a full football game. I walked past so many buildings, I was sure there was a building here for every subject they teach. One building stood out from the rest. Instead of a normal door, it looked like a gate, just metal bars. I'd just avoid that area.
Finally, I arrived at my dorm. The doors were intricately carved with a medieval feel to it. They were stained into a sandy beach with black swirls. The stairs leading up were onyx, with light padding. I walked up the stairs, admiring the work that had been done for these dormitories.
As my hand reached the handle, the door flew open, revealing yet another gorgeous man. Was this a school for models or something? The man was smiling at me, almost blinding me with his dazzling white teeth. He stood about six foot tall with a slender frame. I swear I haven't seen anyone have any body fat since coming in the campus gates.
"Hi there! I'm Jacob. Your dorm president." He ran his long fingers through his sandy blonde hair as he introduced himself.
"Hi, um. I'm Sophia. I must have read the map wrong. I thought this was where I was supposed to be." I replied, feeling more out of place than ever.
"Sophia," Jacob grabbed a clip board from the table next to the door. "No, you are at the correct dorm. Sophia Delrosa, right?"
"Uh, yeah. So we have co-ed dorms here?" I asked embarrassed.
"Yes, of course. The owner wants to make sure we have a full experience while we are here." The way he said experience made me blush a little. "If you would follow me, we have a room set up for you upstairs."
"Lead the way." I said and he quickly started heading for a grand staircase. I walked in and gasped. The walls were adorned with dark iron sconces, going with the medieval theme of the exterior. Gold and silver undertones drew my eye to the tiled floor. I couldn't help myself from saying "Wow!"
"Yes, many of your classmates are from prestigious families and Dean Knight wanted to make sure everyone felt comfortable." He laughed a bit at the end as if he was in on a joke that I had no idea about. He kept walking up the stairs as he was talking, so I followed closely.
As we reached the top landing, I noticed a large painting hanging on the far wall. It was of Kieran. I guess I wouldn't mind seeing his face looking at me every time I had to come to my room.
"Jacob?" I asked as we kept walking down a long corridor toward my room. "Why is there a painting of Prince Kieran in the main room?"
"Oh, this is his dorm as well. Have you met him?"
"Yes, he introduced himself in the ball room." Jacob stopped walking before I finished my sentence. He stopped so abruptly, I almost ran into him.
"You say he introduced himself to you, really?" I didn't like the way he said that. Like somehow I was inferior. I may not be a princess, but nobody is better than anyone else.
"Yeah, he walked over and asked Markus to do him the honors." I said smugly as he stared at me.
He started walking down the hallway silently. Nothing was said until he stopped beside a door. The door had SOPHIA written on it with bold letters. At least it'll be easy to remember my room. I laughed inward at myself.
"This is your room. Please enjoy your stay." Jacob hurried back toward the front before I could even say a word.
I decided to brush it off and walk into my room. The door opened noiselessly, and the most elegant bedroom I'd ever seen was filling my senses. Simple white walls had golden trim. The bed was a king with gold silk sheets. Thank goodness. I love silk for sleeping. I always got too hot with anything else. The carpet was white, with patches of gold throughout. A tall wardrobe sat parallel to the bed's foot, with a vanity next to it. A door stood at the other end of the room.
I walked over to open the door. I had my own bathroom! It was also white and gold, but tile. White marble counters with golden swirls surrounded a swan neck golden sink. Around the sink was everything I would need to keep up my hygiene and beauty standards. I didn't expect them to have everything down to the eyeliner I wear! There was a walk-in shower with glass sliding doors in one corner. Opposite the shower was a jacuzzi bath with marble steps leading up to it. I could handle living like this. Hopefully this program never has to end.
Walking back into the bedroom, I was curious what else they may have done. I decided the wardrobe was my next goal. I opened it, and had every type of outfit, shoe, and underwear I could ever need. There were multiple dresses that looked more expensive than the old apartment I was renting. High heel shoes lined the sides, some flats, even a few pair of sandals. Jeans of all colors were stacked neatly, as well as multiple t-shirts, both low cut and modest. I checked the sizes of everything and couldn't believe it. They were all my size, perfectly.
At the bottom of the wardrobe was a large wrapped box with a note:
Sophia,
Please put this on and meet everyone in the ballroom by 7 p.m. for a supper with all the classmates.
-Mr. Knight
Peeking into the box, I noticed a black dress. Gold lined the neck and hem. I needed to look nice for this supper. I laid the box on the foot of my bed. Deciding to start on my hair and makeup, I made my way back into the bathroom. On the sink was a hair straightener and curling iron.
I started curling my hair. Each strand was a bouncy coil when I had finished. Pulling half my hair up, I secured it with a golden clip. This bathroom had everything I could possibly need to look my best. Looking in the mirror, I had no blemishes on my face, so I decided against putting on any foundation. I always hated the way it felt anyways.
My eyes were lined in a cat style with light tones of golden eyeshadow to match my dress. I curled my eyelashes and put my mascara on to accent my eyes. I never needed fake lashes, my eyelashes were full enough to not need mascara but I liked that it kept its curl afterwards. Now it was time to try on the dress. I composed myself as I walked to the present laying on my bed.
I opened the box and pulled up the dress. It was more beautiful than I expected. Hints of sequins flowed through the dress. I walked to the full length mirror and slipped on a set of black lace underwear, then the dress. It looked better on me than I had even expected. It clung to every curve and accented every bit of my best assets. The neckline sat right on the top of my boobs and showed just enough cleavage to make you want to see more. I looked better than I think I ever have before.
After I finished the last touch ups to my look, including black high heels, some gold bangles, earrings, and a small golden watch, I decided it was time to walk to the ballroom. Out my bedroom door, down the hall, the stairs, I opened the front door. Sitting at the bottom of the stairs was a nice little golf cart, and leaned up against it, was none other than the prince.
"Sophia, would you like to accompany me to the ballroom? Wow! You look amazing." He was wearing a black tuxedo with a gold tie clip, golden cufflinks, and had his hair styled with some volume.
"Oh, thank you. I did decide on wearing terrible shoes for the walk. I'd enjoy that." I replied walking to the passenger side. "So with us not being able to have our cars, we can have these?"
"Not everyone gets one. I have one, and a few others. But, you are more than welcome to use it at any time." He smiled at me and my heart started to flutter. I swear I seen his smile widen.
"Well, you are generous. Thank you."
We sped off, not having to walk that distance in heels was nice. As we arrived at the ballroom, Kieran parked and quickly came to my side to help me, holding his hand out for me. He wrapped my arm around his and walked me to the doors. They opened as we got to the top step, so we kept walking to the ballroom.
Every eye was on us as we entered the room. I gently pulled my arm away from him, worried everyone wouldn't like me touching a prince. Kieran ushered me to a round table that Markus was also sitting at. He pulled out a chair for me to sit, and gently pushed it in as I sat down. Kieran sat down between Markus and myself.
"You're going to make a lot of people jealous." Markus' words surprised me. There is absolutely no reason for anyone to be jealous of me.
"I don't care if they are jealous or envious. I do what I want." Kieran almost sounded mad, but his soft tone said otherwise.
"Thank you all for joining us on this most wonderful first night!" Mr. Knight's voice blared over the speakers. "Let the feast begin!"
Multiple staff members started walking around, putting plates down in front of everyone. I looked down at my plate. Lobster for our first supper here. Mr. Knight must have more money that he could spend in a lifetime. I slowly ate some lobster, but ultimately decided I wanted the side salad and nothing more. I was never one for super fancy food. I'd take a burger over lobster any day.
"Are you dissatisfied with the food?" Kieran broke the silence that haunted the table. I looked up, he was looking at me.
"Oh, I'm just not a fan of lobster. I don't mean to be disrespectful." I replied as he called over a staff member.
"Can you please bring this young lady a different dish?" He asked the woman that walked over.
"No, I think I'm just going to head back to the dorm. thank you all so much for your hospitality." I cut off the woman about to speak, and started walking to the exit.
"Let me take you." Kieran put his hand on my shoulder and turned me to face him.
"No, enjoy the supper, I would like to get some fresh air." I replied and started walking out again. This time he didn't follow.
Realizing soon that I had made a big mistake wearing heels, I slipped out of them, carrying them with me. The ground felt nice against my feet. I walked through the grass, feeling the night air on my face. Suddenly, I felt like someone was watching me. I spun around, looking through the moonlit grounds to see who it could be, but seen nothing.
Walking faster, I could see my dorm in sight, it was a small distance away. I picked up the pace a little more, then felt something crash into my back. I was forced against a tree, chest and face smashing into it slightly. Struggling was no use, it was like I was bound, or whatever hit me was just too heavy.
I couldn't see anyone, and couldn't turn to look. Suddenly I felt hands exploring my body, cupping my breasts, feeling down my body, then rubbing my ass. Fear shot through me faster than I could think. I needed to run, scream, do something.
"I'm not sure why, but I have never smelled anything as pure as you. I have to taste." A gruff voice filled my ears as I felt his hot breath against my neck. Suddenly I felt searing pain on the left side of my collar.
"Please, stop!" I screamed. I had never felt pain like this before. I just wanted it to end. Starting to feel my knees giving out, I was sure I was going to pass out.
As if my cries for help were heard, the weight was lifted from my back. My eyesight was blurry, but I'm sure it was Kieran, holding another man by his throat. I had seen him in the ballroom, he was a classmate. I had no idea who though.
"You ever touch her again, and I will kill you." In the groggy state I was in, I must have misheard Kieran. Before I could do anything, I blacked out.
At one point, I woke up and was being carried by Kieran. I felt safe in his arms. His chest was nice to be against too. I tried to open my eyes, but don't remember anything else. I must have passed out again.
When I woke up, I was in my bed. Still had the dress on from supper. As I stretched, a small pain shot through my neck, sending shivers down my spine. I ran straight to the bathroom to see what had happened.
Horror washed through me as I seen the two punctures in my neck. I pressed my fingers against them and more pain radiated down into my collar bone. There was no mistaking it, I was attacked by a vampire . How did Kieran overpower him though? Was my mind playing tricks on me?
I grabbed two towels and started running water in the shower to get to a good temperature. Once the water was warm enough, I stepped in and let it flow over me, washing away the feel of that creature against me. The water stung on my neck at first, but eased the pain quickly. I cleaned myself of all traces of the night, but nothing could be done for the wounds.
Turning off the water, I grabbed a towel for my hair and started drying off my body. I wrapped myself up and went back to the sink. There had to be something around to cover this, I didn't want anyone to see these marks. Finally, I found some bandages in the bottom drawer, and one large enough to cover both openings. I tore the wrapper off and placed it over my neck gently, securing the edges.
I went to get clothes, starting with a set of red silk underwear and matching bra. I tossed on a pair of light jeans and a purple low cut shirt. The wardrobe might have something to keep anyone from seeing the evidence of what transpired, so I looked around. Resting my eyes on a set of different colored scarves, I chose a purple one with black hearts and wrapped it around my neck, hiding the bandage.
A knock on my door startled me as I finished dressing. Preparing myself mentally, I walked slowly toward my door. I wasn't in the mood for company. I opened the door to see Kieran, standing firm with a blank expression.
"Can I come in, Sophia?" He asked with pain in his voice. "Please, we need to talk."
