A toy worth breaking
The party bled sin. Music pumped through the club like a pulse—loud, relentless, impossible to ignore. Beneath the haze of smoke and neon light, bodies writhed in slow, sensual chaos. Designer perfume clung to the air, mixing with champagne and secrets no one dared speak aloud. Young men with hollow eyes and swollen wallets laughed too loud. Girls in dresses that weren’t really dresses slipped into laps like whispered promises. It was the kind of place where people went to forget themselves—and maybe, if they were lucky, find something darker in return. Soraya Monroe didn’t need to forget. She didn’t drink to drown emotions, didn’t dance to escape. She wasn’t like them. She had no regrets. No softness left to bury. She was the reason people forgot. The reason they unraveled. From her seat in the farthest booth—upholstered in blood-red velvet, half-shadowed by the curtain of thick cigar smoke—Soraya watched them. Like a queen above her kingdom. Like a predator watching prey. Her black silk slip dress hugged her curves with lethal elegance. Slits high enough to be dangerous, heels sharp enough to kill. But it wasn’t the outfit that made heads turn. It was the energy. Cold. Commanding. Calculated. Her dark eyes scanned the room, not for pleasure, but with clinical boredom. No one impressed her. Not tonight. Not ever. These people were predictable. Plastic. They begged for her attention without daring to meet her gaze. She took a long drag from her cigarette and blew smoke like a goddess punishing the earth. “Another night, another sea of pathetic men,” she muttered, voice like honey over razors. “Soraya,” came a smooth voice beside her. Roman, her occasional companion, leaned in with a lazy smirk. “You look like a widow ready to bury the world.” She didn’t even glance at him. “That’s because I already have.” He laughed, but it was brittle. He knew better than to think she was joking. Just then, something shifted. A disturbance in her periphery. Her gaze snapped to the entrance. And that’s when she saw him. Not the richest man in the room. Not the most handsome. But something about him—messy dark hair, a vulnerable slouch, hands shoved awkwardly in his pockets—made the rest of the noise fall away. He didn’t belong here. That much was obvious. He walked in like he’d been dared. Or dragged. Like someone had promised him escape and instead handed him a cage wrapped in gold. She leaned forward, lips parting slightly. There was nothing special about him—and yet everything about him was *wrong*. Wrong in a way that thrilled her. Like a piano key out of tune that made the whole melody ache. He hesitated in the entrance, gaze sweeping nervously. He wasn’t hunting. He wasn’t chasing. He was surviving. And Soraya, for the first time in months, felt… interested. Roman noticed. “Really? Him?” She didn’t answer. Didn’t have to. --- Jace Halston hadn’t meant to end up here. He’d said no to Max’s invitation a dozen times. This wasn’t his scene. Never had been. But Max was insistent, and Jace—the people-pleasing mess he was—had finally given in. Just for one drink. Just for one night. He should’ve stayed home. The moment he stepped inside, he knew he didn’t fit. His jacket was borrowed, his shoes scuffed. His eyes darted around like he expected someone to yell at him for existing. But then he felt it. That gaze. Heavy. Icy. Burning through the fog and noise like a blade. He turned. Met her eyes. And forgot how to breathe. She was staring at him like he was something to dissect. Or devour. He looked away too quickly, heart hammering. “Max,” he muttered, stepping closer to his friend. “Maybe we should go.” Max laughed, already halfway drunk. “Dude, you just got here.” Jace didn’t explain. Couldn’t. Because how do you tell someone you’re being hunted by a woman who hasn’t even moved? --- Soraya rose from her seat. Roman raised an eyebrow. “You never approach.” She smiled, slow and cruel. “Tonight, I’m bored enough to make an exception.” The dancefloor parted for her without touch. People felt her before they saw her. She moved like smoke—ungraspable, untouchable, and chokingly present. Jace saw her coming and forgot how to stand. She stopped in front of him, lips curved in a smile that promised nothing good. “You,” she said, voice low, rich, and terrifying. “What’s your name?” Jace swallowed. “J-Jace.” “You look lost, Jace.” “I… kind of am.” Her smile widened. “Perfect.” He didn’t understand. Not until she took his chin between her fingers, tilted his face up, and looked him dead in the eyes. “Let’s play a game,” she whispered. He blinked. “What kind of game?” Soraya leaned in, breath brushing his ear. “The kind where I break you slowly, and you thank me for it.” Jace froze. She let go, turned, and walked away—not waiting to see if he would follow. He did. Because some people run from fire. And others? Others step right into it.
