Chapter one
Speeding through the traffic on my teal colored bike, pedalling so hard my legs were hurting, but I am so late to work; so I picked up the pace of the pedalling. I am working in a library on the outskirts of New York. I live not so far from it so I am always on time, but today my alarm clock failed to wake me up since I forgot to change the battery. Little things can change your life, can't they? Suddenly a car horn stopped me from my thinking and I turned around to see what the fuss was about. A fancy looking black polished car was on the one side of me and was trying to make me move even though it's my time to cross the street. Ugh, I thought. These men and their mad hurries, well at least I think it was a man. I made an are-you-kidding-me face and showed my sweet little finger to the nice gentleman, I couldn't see his face because the glass was tinted a black color. And I started to move away from it before he could answer me with a worse response. After a moment I reached work with a delay of 15 minutes. I placed my bike in my spot and secure it in. I was entering from the back door, panting like a tired dog with its long tongue out. I know, I look fricking beautiful. Feel my sarcasm. "Darcy dear is that you?" Mrs. Harrison, my boss and the library owner greeted me. She was my grandma's best friend, I only knew my grandmother a little, and she died when I was four years old from breast cancer. "Yes Mrs Harrison, it's me, I'm so sorry I'm late." She turned to look at me from the inventory checklist that I'm supposed to be doing. I felt bad for making her do it. "Don't worry dear girl" she answered with the motherly tone that her lovely voice had always held since I was a little girl. It made me miss my mom, she died more than a year ago, but it still hurt so much, I blinked the tears back and cleared my throat to control my voice, I didn't want Mrs Harrison to worry again. "I'll do that Mrs Harrison go lie down and rest I'll manage with the library" I was trying to get her to rest, she never wants to and says she's fine but I know the truth. "Fine dear but in an hour, you go get some lunch for the both of us and I work from there on, all right?" She had a warm smile. "Deal" Lunch time comes round and I go out to our favourite coffee place that's on the same street as the library. Once I return with our coffee and bagels, I got inside to Mrs Harrison's office and take a seat to eat. After I'm on the back room where the newly arrived books are, and as I'm checking the packages, when I hear Mrs Harrison call out for me "Yes? Were you calling me?" I asked She nodded with tired face, the coffee still in her old, wrinkled hands. "What's up, are you ok?" In her eyes I see hesitance, as she motions me to take a seat next to her. I wondered what it was be about, everything is going fine "I'm sorry darling girl, but I am closing the library we are not doing well at all, and I have been putting it off for weeks but we have no one here ever, I can't even pay your salary anymore dear, I'm sorry." She explains while rubbing my hands in a circular motion "What? But Greta that cannot happen, you love this place and I do too! it doesn't matter that you can't pay me I'll get another job, and help you in here or anything, we can work this out together!" "Oh dear girl, you are so nice to me, but I'm fine, I have my life savings and I'll rent this place and go live with my sisters in Florida, it's you I'm worried about, you have no one but me here, and no money, you need a better job, maybe as a personal assistant or something so you can go to college." I smiled in return I can't have a job as a PA, I just studied till the end of High-school and started working as a waitress or other lower paying jobs . I need to pay last month's rent tomorrow and I don't even have enough at the moment. What the frack am I going to do now?! We said goodbye and hugged, it was already 7pm and I took my bike and started pedalling home. Okay, maybe I'll check the newspaper for job options even though I'm sure they are not gonna be that well paying but at least I could get some much needed money. Once outside the apartment I stepped off of the bike and secured it on my parking spot, also known as the only bike spot. Walking to the steps of the apartment building, my place was on the second floor of an old building in a horrible street. I finally reached my apartment and I was happily opening the wooden door; my apartment was nice, well nicer than the outside but in other known ways it sucked! It was miniature; all it had was my mom's blue couch and a little table where I placed all my books and my morning cup of much needed coffee. On the other side there was a little kitchen to the wall divided by an ugly looking breakfast bar and barstools And then a door and my bed with a lamp on the nightstand, a little closet and a door which led to the bathroom, everything was painted white by me because the previous owner had the walls a horrible yellow tone. I so tired that I just went straight to bed with the newspaper looking for a decent paying job.
