Kyra stared blankly out the window, not paying attention to what’s outside. Not like it mattered, it was nothing but trees anyway. This was their fifth move in two years, after the third she didn’t bother unpacking.
Her uncle Theodore glanced at her through the review mirror,
“This will be the last time, I promise.”
Kyra scoffed,
“You said that last time, and the time before that, and the time before that.”
Theodore glanced over to his wife Sally and gave her a small smirk, in response rubbed his arm.
Kyra knew it wasn’t their fault, it was hers. It was because of what she is, a hybrid. Half werewolf half vampire, a very rare and dangerous breed. Werewolves and vampires have been enemies for decades, so how Kyra became to be was a mystery. She knew nothing of her parents, her aunt and uncle have taken care of her since she was a baby. They refused to tell her anything about them, she didn’t even know who was the vampire or who was the werewolf. Also considering vampires are created, not born. They can’t reproduce which made Kyra’s existence even more a mystery and complicated. But they cared for her as if she was their own, they couldn’t have children so she was the closest thing they had. They have sacrificed so much to keep her safe and never made her feel bad about having to move.
Kyra took a deep breath and rolled her eyes,
“Sorry uncle Teddy, it’s just been a long ride. How much longer?”
A smile wrinkled across his face, he was in his early fifties but you’d never of known. He had sandy blond hair and bright brown eyes, he had a little stubble following his jawline that got thicker when it met his chin.
“Not much longer, about another hour or so, this pack is one of the strongest in the region. And they like to keep to themselves, so we won’t worry about outsiders crossing our paths.”
Kyra turned her head giving him a confused look,
“Aren’t we outsiders?”
Sally chuckled, she too was in her early fifties but didn’t look it. She looked very youthful, she had bright auburn hair the fell like a waterfall past her shoulders. Her skin was young and tight with a sun kissed glow, her eyes were a bright hazelnut brown. It made it hard for Kyra to figure out who she was blood related to, she looked nothing like either of them. Kyra had flawless porcelain skin with full plumb lips, she had long big curly pitch black hair that half way down slowly faded to white. Her eyes were a bright burgundy, they really stood out against her pale skin. She was a very beautiful girl, all the boys would stop and stare at her drooling over her in front of their girlfriends.
“Your uncle and I were born and raised in the Bloodstone pack, your uncle is close to the Alpha.”
Kyra cleared her throat,
“Do they know about ‘me’?”
Theodore and Sally looked at each other,
“Not exactly we just told them your… sick.”
Kyra’s eyes widened,
“Great, I’m a walking S.T.D. I don’t mind being ignored but I do mind people whispering and staring at me.”
“Ky, it will be alright. The only person who will know your ‘sick’ will be Alpha Ryder and he doesn’t run his mouth. He’s a lot like you, he keeps to himself specially after.. he lost his family.”
Kyra noticed Theodore swallow hard when he said that. She rested her head back and stared off out the window, more trees. The Bloodstone pack lived deep in the forest far away from the rest of the werewolf community, which was nice. As long as they were far away from the SilverFangs pack the better. The SilverFangs were the pack that was hunting them down, their Alpha Wyatt found out Kyra was a hybrid. He saw Kyra’s power and potential as a valuable weapon, Kyra was stronger than any werewolf or vampire. She is also the only one who can regenerate from both werewolf and vampire attacks. Neither werewolf nor vampire can regenerate from each other wounds. Wyatt wanted to claim Kyra as his “Chosen Mate” and breed an army of hybrids, he even went as far as killing his actual mate to do so. Luckily they snuck away before he could claim her and they’ve been on the run ever since. They were able to lose them in Texas with the help of a witch who was able to mask Kyra’s scent long enough for them to flee to Alaska where the Bloodstone pack resides. Theodore said they’d never find them there cause they’d have to travel through vampire territory to get to them. There’s only one safe passage through and it’s only known to the Bloodstone pack, so now Kyra can finally have a normal life. Well somewhat normal life, she was about to turn 18 soon.
When a werewolf turns 18 they find their mate, someone who they spend the rest of their life with. It’s the most important part of a young werewolf’s life, but Kyra was terrified. She didn’t know if she was even going to have a mate or if she did if they’d accept her. Theodore used to tell her that her mate would love her no matter what, he said it was hard to explain but it was like a magnet that pulls you to a certain person. That they have a certain scent that only you can smell and it drives you to them, like Sally’s was pine and juniper berries. When you find that person and lock eyes with them, you’d do anything for them no matter the consequences. Kyra wanted to believe him she really did but after witnessing what Wyatt did, she was terrified.
“We’re here.”
Theodore said
Kyra looked ahead and saw a huge tall concrete wall that went on for miles with guard towers every mile or so.
They pulled up to were a guard was standing with a rifle,
“State your business.”
He had a deep booming voice, he was tall and very broad. His arm muscles were the size of Kyra’s head, she could see why they’d have him as the main guard at the front gate.
“I’m Theodore Brooks, Alpha Ryder is expecting us.”
Theodore said with a hint of worry in his voice.
The guard turned his head as if he heard something, Kyra heard a voice over the ear piece say let them through.
The guard nodded and waved them on.
Theodore sighed with relief and nodded. They drove through the gate, Kyra looked around there were a lot of guards. She didn’t know if that was a good or bad thing, Theodore noticed her looking around.
“I told you this time will be different, they won’t find us here and if they did. They won’t be able to get through.”
He had a serious look on his face as they drove down the road through the trees.
They finally came to a town, it was pretty big. It had everything, a hardware store, grocery store, a few daycares, schools, libraries everything. Kyra looked at all the buildings, she saw a bowling alley with a few teenagers hanging outside.
They drove out of the town and towards the neighborhoods, all the houses were 2 stories. They all looked alike, some were white, some were light blue or gray. They drove all the way to end of a cul-de-sac, they pulled into the last house closest to the forest.
“Home sweet home.”
Sally said opening her door.
Theodore turned to look at Kyra who was hesitant getting out of the car.
“Hey it’s going to be ok, I made sure we got the house on the end closest to the woods so you shift without being seen.”
Kyra gave a small smile and nodded.
When a werewolf hits puberty they shift into their wolf form, which is a normal wolf but much bigger. Kyra’s wolf wasn’t a normal wolf, hers had shorter hair little longer in the head, chest and tail area. She was a lot sleeker and sharper features than the normal werewolf, werewolves are big and shaggy.
It’s been awhile since Kyra shifted, she missed it.
Theodore walked to the back of the grey SUV and unhitched the small trailer that held only a few of their belongings.
He grabbed the hitch and dragged it to the side,
“We have to go up to the pack house in a few minutes, why don’t you go inside and pick your room. Freshen up and meet us back in the car in ten.”
Kyra growled, she hated meeting new people specially Alphas and Betas. Normally Alphas have this power that makes other werewolves obey them but not Kyra, they have no affect on her.
“Don’t worry, this should be the only time you’d have to be face to face with Alpha Ryder, just act like his power affects you. Just don’t make eye contact and keep your head down, just be submissive.”
Theodore said handing her boxes that said her name on it.
Kyra tucked her lips in and sighed,
“I’ll try.”
She walked into the front door, this house was bigger and more open then their last one. Big windows that let in lots of natural sunlight, Kyra walked up the stairs. There were three rooms nicely spaced apart, Kyra picked the one all the way in the end. She liked having the room away from her aunt and uncle for many reasons, mainly one was so she didn’t hear them having s*x. Not only did it gross her out but it saddened her, knowing she’ll most likely never have that with someone. Never experiencing the intimacy and bond of a man, never being able to experiencing true love.
Tears threaten to sting Kyra’s eyes, she blinks rapidly to stop them from pooling up. She placed her boxes down and looked out the window, the wall went around for miles. It reminded her of a prison with the guard towers, the other werewolf territories had walls but nothing like this. Of course the Bloodstone pack was fairly close to vampire territory, which explains way they have such a big, heavily guarded wall.
Kyra opened one of the big boxes and pulled out her air mattress, she laid it out. She opened the little compartment on the end and pulled out the cord, plugged it to the wall and turned it on. It slowly stared to inflate, while her mattress grew she took a smaller box and walked it into her own personal bathroom. It was a decent size with a full mirror, deep basin sink and a soaking tub with a separate shower.
She put her toiletries where they belonged and looked at the tub, she couldn’t wait to take a nice long hot soak in it.
“Ky!!! Come on we have to go!!”
Sally yelled from the bottom of the stairs.
Kyra let out a deep sigh preparing herself to met their new Alpha.
