Although Ryder loved his mother, he was annoyed with her timing.
“So why did The Elders call you?”
Ryder walked over and poured himself a drink, then leaned on his desk facing his mother.
She took a sip and waved her hands,
“Same s**t different day, telling me you still haven’t found a mate yet and it’s my job to convince you to claim Amber. Ryder I can only stall them for so long, you’re running out of time. Alpha Dwight and Alpha Jack are already negotiating on how to split up your pack. Have you found any suitable mate?”
Ryder clinch his jaw and took a deep breath,
“I don’t know, it’s complicated.”
His mother studied him then she scoffed,
“You found your second mate didn’t you, who?”
Ryder took a sip from his drink and pointed to the door,
“Theodore and Sally’s niece, but them and Rodrick claim she has Lycanthexia. I don’t believe it but if Rodrick does he won’t allow the bond.”
Ryders mother blew raspberries,
“Never trust a man whose name rhymes with ‘d**k’, he can’t deny you your true mate without good reason and approval from the rest of the counsel. She doesn’t look like she has it and if she does, then she has a small case that can be managed with elixirs.”
She finished her drink.
Ryder shook his head,
“I think they’re hiding something, I don’t think she has Lycanthexia. I’ve been reading book after book and even a small case she doesn’t show symptoms.”
She shrugged,
“Use your Alpha power on her, demand her to tell the truth.”
Ryder shook his head,
“It doesn’t work on her for some reason, Rodrick said the Alpha powers don’t affect her because of the Lycanthexia. But in all the books I’ve read, that wasn’t a symptom.”
Ryder mother crossed her arms and sighed,
“Well you better figure it out soon, the Elders insist you take Amber as a chosen if you don’t find a second mate and there’s nothing I can do sweetheart. I’ve been trying but there’s only so much I can do.”
Ryder nodded,
“I know mom, I appreciate everything you’ve done. I don’t know what I would have done without you.”
Ryder hugged his mother and kissed her forehead, she returned a hug.
“If this little one is truly your second mate I suggest you get to the bottom of this. Figure out what they’re hiding and why, do you have any assumptions as so why they would lie?”
Ryder shook his head,
“All I know is they are on the run from their old alpha from New York. He was obsessed with her, so they fled. They didn’t exactly go into why he was obsessed, but it was enough for him to kill his own mate.”
His mother pulled back and looked at Ryder with a confused face,
“Very odd, I have some connections in New York I’ll see if I can get ahold of them and see if they have any insight. In the meantime watch her closely, gain her trust. If you feel the bond there’s a good chance she may as well. Maybe she’ll open up to you.”
Ryder nodded,
“Thanks mom, I love you.”
She smiled and patted his chest,
“I love you too baby. Now I’m going to get some rest, I’ll see you at dinner.”
Ryder nodded and watched her leave, Ryder decided to go to the library and look at more books.
Instead of looking into Lycanthexia, he looked into what would drive an Alpha to kill his own mate.
Madness was really the only explanation, then one word caught Ryders attention, hybrid.
Ryder looked through more book about hybrid, he only found one.
Excerpt from The Bestiary of the Supernatural: Rare Creatures and Their Secrets
The concept of hybrids—beings born of a vampire and a werewolf—is steeped in mystery and speculation. No verifiable accounts of such a creature have ever been recorded, leading many to dismiss their existence as myth. However, among the supernatural communities, whispers persist of their potential reality, supported by ancient prophecies and fragmented lore.
If hybrids do exist, they would represent a perfect storm of genetic contradictions, combining the traits of predator and prey, beast and immortal. Below are the theoretical descriptions compiled from centuries of rumor and conjecture.
Ryder flipped thought pages.
Human Form: It is said that hybrids in human form would be strikingly distinct, their appearance betraying their supernatural lineage.
Skin: Hypothetically, a hybrid’s skin would be porcelain-like—pale, smooth, and seemingly untouched by time or imperfection. This could be attributed to their vampiric heritage, with its associations of ageless beauty.
Hair: Many theories suggest hybrids would exhibit dual-toned or shimmering hair, possibly a manifestation of their mixed lineage. Shades of black interwoven with silver or white tips are often described in old texts.
Eyes: Their eyes are the most debated feature. Some claim hybrids would have a singular shade—most often burgundy or crimson—while others argue their gaze might shift under certain emotional states, reflecting their internal conflict.
Aura: Accounts suggest their presence would feel simultaneously alluring and unsettling, an intoxicating mixture of grace and danger.
Ryder couldn’t help but compare Kyras features to the book, they were on point. He kept reading the book,
Abilities
Should hybrids exist, they would likely wield an array of abilities drawn from both parent species, though with unpredictable enhancements.
Enhanced Senses: Combining the acute senses of a wolf with the heightened awareness of a vampire, hybrids are theorized to perceive their environment on an almost supernatural level.
Immortality and Regeneration: Vampiric blood would likely grant hybrids a prolonged lifespan and accelerated healing, though some theorize their werewolf side could temper their immortality with periodic vulnerabilities.
Scent: The scent of a hybrid is often described in lore as a paradox—earthy and warm, like a werewolf, yet musky and floral, reflecting their vampiric allure. This unique scent is said to both attract and unsettle other supernatural beings.
Ryder thought about Kyra’s scent, Vanilla and roses, which was unusual combination for a werewolf.
Speculation and Fear
Hybrids, if real, are a subject of both fascination and dread. Theoreticians argue that such creatures could represent a bridge between the two worlds, uniting vampires and werewolves—or they could bring ruin, amplifying the worst traits of both species. Their hypothetical existence is often tied to prophecies, suggesting that hybrids may be destined for greatness or destruction. Whether the hybrids are mere myths or hidden realities remains to be seen, but their concept lingers in the collective consciousness of all supernatural beings—a tantalizing mix of beauty, power, and danger.
Ryder flipped around to how a hybrid can be conceived.
Theoretical Conditions for Hybrid Creation
The union of a werewolf and a vampire is inherently problematic, as their natures are oppositional in almost every sense. Vampires are creatures of death and shadow, sustained by blood and bound by darkness. Werewolves, by contrast, are beings of life and vitality, intrinsically tied to the cycles of nature and the moon. These differences make conception nearly impossible, but under specific conditions, it is theorized that a hybrid could be born:
The Fated Bond
A true mate bond between a werewolf and a vampire—a union guided by destiny itself—could override the natural barriers between the species. Such a bond is believed to be nearly impossible, as it would require both participants to suppress their primal instincts and fully accept one another.
The bond might manifest during events of heightened supernatural energy, such as a Bloodmoon.
Theoretical texts suggest the bond could stabilize the conflicting natures within the child.
Magical Intervention
The role of magic cannot be ignored in the creation of a hybrid. A skilled witch or sorcerer could theoretically manipulate the forces of life and death to enable the conception and survival of a hybrid offspring.
A ritual performed during rare cosmic alignments, such as a total lunar eclipse or the convergence of ley lines, might suspend the natural opposition between werewolf and vampire biology.
Some believe that ancient artifacts or forbidden spells, long buried in secrecy, could hold the key to artificially creating such a being.
The Influence of Prophecy
Legends and prophecies have often hinted at the existence of hybrids, suggesting their creation is tied to the will of fate rather than chance. A prophecy could align events to make the impossible a reality, ensuring that the hybrid serves a specific purpose in the grand design of supernatural balance or chaos.
Rare Genetic Compatibility
If both the werewolf and vampire carried specific, recessive traits in their bloodlines, their union might produce a viable offspring. These traits could be tied to ancient, powerful bloodlines capable of harmonizing the clashing energies of their respective species.
Ryder closed the book and processed everything he just read.
Ryder couldn’t shake the gnawing feeling clawing at his chest. The pieces didn’t add up, yet they fit too perfectly to ignore. He had read about hybrids—myths and theories in old books meant to frighten or intrigue. They were supposed to be impossible, a forbidden blend of predator and prey. But as he thought about Kyra, the similarities were there, clear as the moonlight that bathed the forest. Her unique scent, her eyes that seemed too sharp, too knowing, the effortless strength she carried—things he had dismissed as extraordinary but never questioned.
The thought sent a chill down his spine. Was it true? Could she be hiding something so monumental? His wolf bristled at the idea, torn between instinct and the bond they shared. The potential betrayal stung, but it wasn’t anger he felt. It was confusion. Fear.
And yet, despite his doubts, his love for her didn’t waver. If the impossible was true, what would that mean for them? For his pack? For everything he thought he knew? Ryder couldn’t leave it alone. He had to find answers—he had to find the truth about her, no matter how much it might hurt.
