NEW GIRL , OLD MONEY
Chapter 1: New Girl, Old Money
The alarm buzzed sharply through the small apartment, echoing off the plain walls. Kelea groaned and rolled over, slapping the snooze button with a tired hand. Another day, another reminder that her world was about to shift completely. Her mother was already up, humming in the kitchen, while her dad sat at the small dining table sipping coffee before heading off to his construction job. Their combined income barely brushed $20,000 a year, but it had always been enough to make their life feel full simple, but filled with love.
Now, everything was about to change.
Kelea stood in front of the mirror, adjusting the new uniform she’d gotten for Cresthill Academy. The blazer felt stiff and foreign on her shoulders, the plaid skirt a sharp contrast to the jeans and hoodies she usually wore. The school was exclusive, elite, and just the kind of place that didn’t accept girls like her—except when they were offered rare scholarships for being ridiculously smart or talented. In Kelea’s case, it was both.
She walked out to catch the school shuttle, her heart pounding. The ride to Cresthill was quiet, the city slowly shifting from cracked sidewalks and corner stores to mansions behind gates and spotless roads. When the gates of Cresthill Academy opened, she felt like she’d stepped into a Netflix series.
The buildings were gothic and stunning, the students even more so. Designer bags, luxury watches, girls with thousand-dollar lip gloss, and boys who looked like they stepped off magazine covers. Kelea hugged her backpack tighter, ignoring the stares as she walked through the courtyard.
“Who’s the new girl?” someone whispered.
“She came on the scholarship. Probably can’t even spell Gucci.”
Kelea kept walking, chin up, but her cheeks were hot. She found her way to the main office, collected her schedule, and followed the map to her first class. But nothing could’ve prepared her for what came next.
As she pushed the classroom door open, the room fell silent. Sitting by the window, slouched in his chair like he owned the damn world, was a boy with jet-black hair, silver rings, and a jawline sharp enough to cut glass. His cold eyes flicked up to her, unreadable.
“That’s Luca Moretti,” a girl behind her whispered with a little tremble in her voice. “His dad runs the Moretti crime family. Like, actual mafia. And he’s hot as sin but dangerous.”
Luca didn’t say a word. Just stared.
Kelea held his gaze for a second too long before turning to find a seat. The tension was electric.
Second period wasn’t much better. She walked into the literature class and spotted someone who looked like he belonged in a royal portrait. Blonde hair, perfect posture, dressed in a tailored uniform with a pin that looked suspiciously like a royal crest. As he stood to hand in his assignment, people practically bowed.
“That’s Prince Adrien of Montelarre,” the same girl whispered again. “Literal royalty. Billionaire. He never talks to anyone unless he thinks you're worth it.”
So why, when Kelea accidentally dropped her pen, did he bend down, pick it up gently, and offer her the softest smile she’d ever seen?
“Welcome to Cresthill,” he said.
Her heart flipped.
By lunch, the entire school was buzzing. The scholarship girl had caught the attention of both the mafia heir and the royal prince. Two boys who never looked twice at anyone. Two boys who didn’t talk to each other, either. In fact, they seemed to hate each other.
Luca brushed past Adrien in the cafeteria line, shoulder-checking him.
Adrien barely flinched. “Watch yourself, Moretti.”
“You first, Your Highness.”
Kelea stood frozen, her tray in her hands. Was this her life now?
She sat alone under a tree, trying to breathe.
One day in, and already the world was watching.
Two sets of eyes. One cold, one warm. Both burning into her like fire.
