The Frost of Destiny
The northern winds always carried the scent of pine and oncoming snow, but tonight, they carried a warning.
Aria pulled her thick fur cloak tighter around her shoulders as she stood at the edge of the pack borders. The Northern Trap—that was what the rogue wolves called this territory. It was a beautiful but deadly expanse of endless winter, ruled with an iron fist by the Bear Crest Pack.
For years, her people lived under the shadow of the Bear Crest warriors. They were ruthless, strong, and deeply feared. Yet, a strange pull in her chest kept drawing her closer to their lands It was a dangerous instinct. As a she-wolf without a pack, stepping an inch over the border meant execution.
Suddenly, a deep, resonant howl shattered the silence of the woods. The ground beneath her feet seemed to vibrate with power. It wasn't just any wolf. It was the Alpha of Bear Crest.
Aria’s heart hammered against her ribs. Her inner wolf stirred, pacing anxiously, whispering a single word she had spent her whole life running from: Mate.
She turned to flee, but the crunch of heavy paws on the frozen snow behind her made her freeze. Out of the darkness, a massive midnight-black wolf emerged, his golden eyes locking onto hers. The trap had sprung, and there was no escaping the Northern Alpha.
The air grew heavy, thick with the suffocating scent of dark chocolate and fresh rain—the unmistakable aroma of a powerful Alpha. Aria’s knees trembled under the sheer weight of his aura. Every instinct she possessed screamed at her to run, to hide, to disappear into the blinding snowstorm. But her feet remained glued to the frozen earth.
The midnight-black wolf stepped closer, his massive form throwing a long, terrifying shadow over her. With a swift, fluid motion, the wolf began to shift. The bones cracked and reshaped, the dark fur receding into smooth, sun-kissed skin. Within seconds, a tall, muscular man stood before her, unbothered by the biting cold of the northern winds.
His golden eyes hummed with an intense, possessive light as they swept over her small frame. Aria took a frantic step backward, her back hitting the rough bark of an old pine tree. She was trapped.
"You are far from home, little wolf," the man spoke, his voice a low, gravelly rumble that sent shivers straight down her spine. It wasn't just a statement; it was an accusation.
"I... I was just leaving," Aria stammered, cursing herself internally for showing weakness. She forced herself to look up, meeting his piercing gaze. "I didn't mean to cross the border. The storm confused me.
"A cold, humorless chuckle escaped his lips as he stepped into her personal space, trapping her between his massive body and the tree. He leaned down, his breath warm against her freezing ear. "The Northern Trap does not accept excuses. Out here, rogues are executed on sight."
Aria swallowed hard, her heart pounding like a trapped bird in her chest. She closed her eyes, bracing for the worst. But instead of teeth tearing into her throat, she felt the gentle, calloused brush of his fingers against her jawline. A sudden spark of electricity jolted through her veins at the contact, making her gasp.
The man froze, his golden eyes widening in sheer disbelief as he stared at her. The anger in his face faded, replaced by shock and a raw, primal hunger.
"Mated," he whispered, the word carrying a weight that changed the course of their lives forever. "The moon goddess has a twisted sense of humor. A rogue... as my Luna."
Aria's eyes went wide. She was looking directly at Alpha Kael, the ruthless leader of the Bear Crest Pack—and according to the heavens, her destined mate.
The silence that followed his declaration was deafening. The northern wind seemed to die down, leaving only the sound of Aria’s ragged breathing and the steady, heavy thud of Kael’s heart. Her mind raced, rejecting the reality presented to her. A rogue she-wolf and the most feared Alpha of the northern territories could not be bound by destiny. It was a death sentence disguised as a blessing.
"No," Aria whispered, her voice shaking as she tried to pull away from his touch. The phantom sparks of the mate bond still danced on her skin, but fear overrode the primal pull. "This is a mistake. I am nobody. Just let me go, and I will never return to the north."
Kael’s grip on her jaw tightened slightly, not enough to hurt, but firm enough to ground her. His golden eyes flared with a dangerous intensity. "The Moon Goddess does not make mistakes, little wolf. Your scent, your blood—it calls to my wolf in a way no other ever has. You think I would let my destined Luna walk away into a freezing death?"
"I've survived this long on my own!" she snapped, a flash of her defiant spirit breaking through her terror. "I don't need the protection of a pack that executes my kind on sight."
A dark smirk played on Kael’s lips, though his eyes remained serious. He leaned in closer, his scent of rich chocolate and rain enveloping her senses entirely, making it hard for her to think straight. "You survived the wild, yes. But you will not survive the storm that is coming. And more importantly, you belong to me now."
Before Aria could protest further, Kael stripped off his heavy fur coat and draped it over her shoulders. The warmth of his body heat trapped in the fabric hit her instantly, making her shiver with relief despite herself. He didn't wait for her permission. With a swift movement, he scooped her up into his arms, lifting her effortlessly against his chest.
"Put me down!" Aria gasped, kicking her legs, but it was like trying to move a mountain. His arms were like iron bands around her.
"Save your breath, Aria," Kael murmured, already turning back toward the deeper part of the forest, away from the border.
She froze. "How do you know my name?"
"The bond tells me what I need to know," he replied smoothly, his long strides cutting through the deep snow with ease. "And right now, it tells me you are freezing, hungry, and terrified of what happens next."
As they moved deeper into the Bear Crest territory, the landscape began to change. The wild, unkempt forest gave way to structured paths, marked by towering stone pillars carved with the crest of a roaring bear. Aria watched in silence, her heart heavy with anxiety. She was entering the heart of the beast. Every wolf they passed along the path stopped, bowing their heads in deep respect to their Alpha, their eyes widening in shock as they noticed the small woman cradled in his arms, wrapped in his personal cloak.
The murmurs began almost instantly. A rogue? Why is the Alpha carrying a rogue?
Kael ignored them all, his gaze fixed straight ahead until they reached the Pack House—a massive, fortress-like structure made of dark timber and stone, glowing with warm lights from the inside. He carried her up the wide wooden steps and kicked the heavy front doors open.
The grand hall was bustling with pack members, but the moment the Alpha stepped inside, a hush fell over the room. At the center of the hall stood a tall, older man with silvering hair—Gideon, the pack’s Beta and Kael’s most trusted advisor.
