Chapter 8: Reunion

1641 Words
The next morning, Ellie found herself humming carols as she moved through the castle. Her heart felt lighter, and she couldn't help the smile that played on her lips as she gave the tours. She spoke of the castle's history, gestured towards its grand halls, and led her groups through the cold, stone passageways, her voice filled with cheer she hadn't felt in so long. For once, she wasn't weighed down by the past—instead, she felt like she was part of the festive joy that surrounded her. When it came time to collect her next tour group, Ellie made her way to the entrance hall, her heart still humming with warmth. But as she scanned the crowd, her eyes caught on a familiar face. The smile fell from her lips, her heart sinking as shock washed over her. Megan. Her sister. The sister who had betrayed her. Megan stood there, her eyes searching the crowd until they landed on Ellie. She gave a small, hesitant wave, her expression a mix of hope and worry. Ellie blinked, inhaling sharply, her nostrils flaring. She hadn't expected this. She wasn't ready for this. Kida growled in the back of her mind, her voice filled with anger. "She dares to show her face after what she did?" But there was no time to think. She had a tour to give, and Ellie forced herself to smile, to keep her voice light and cheerful as she called out to the group. "Good morning, everyone! Welcome to Krähenburg Castle. I'll be your guide today." She could feel Megan's gaze on her, but Ellie refused to look at her sister, refused to acknowledge her presence. Instead, she focused on the tour, leading the group through the castle with as much enthusiasm as she could muster. The tour felt like it went on forever, every moment made heavier by the knowledge that Megan was there, watching her. Ellie spoke of the castle's history, its secrets, its mysteries—all the while feeling her sister's eyes on her, a weight she couldn't shake. When the tour finally ended, Ellie let out a breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding. She thanked the group, her smile tight, and turned to leave. Megan took a hesitant step forward, her hands twisting together in a nervous gesture Ellie remembered from their childhood. "El, I... I had to see you. To explain..." Ellie raised a hand, cutting off her sister's words. "Explain? You mean explain why you betrayed me? Why you destroyed everything I held dear?" The words came out harsher than she intended, her carefully constructed walls crumbling in the face of her sister's unexpected arrival. Stay calm, Ellie reminded herself. You're not that person anymore. You're stronger now. Megan flinched as if struck, her lower lip trembling. "Please, Ellie. I know I don't deserve your forgiveness, but I need you to understand. I was... I was lost, and jealous, and so, so stupid." Ellie's gaze roamed over her sister's face, searching for any hint of deception. The Megan she knew was impulsive, attention-seeking. Could it be real? Ellie wondered, her intuition warring with the pain of betrayal. Or is this another act? "Why now?" Ellie asked, her voice softening despite her best efforts. "Why come all this way?" Megan's eyes glistened with unshed tears. "Because I couldn't bear it anymore. The guilt, the knowledge of what I'd done to you. I had to make it right, even if... even if you can never forgive me." Ellie closed her eyes for a moment, centering herself. When she opened them, she fixed Megan with a steady gaze. "I don't know if I can trust you again, Megan. But I'm willing to listen." As Megan began to speak, Ellie braced herself for the flood of emotions to come, knowing that whatever happened next would shape the course of both their futures. Megan took a shaky breath, her delicate features contorting with anguish. "When Scott... when he showed interest in me, I thought I'd finally found something that was mine." Ellie's jaw clenched, the memory of that betrayal still raw. She remained silent, her piercing eyes never leaving Megan's face as her sister continued. "But it was all a lie," Megan whispered, her voice cracking. "He never cared about me. I was just a way to hurt you. And I let him use me because I was too blinded by my own jealousy to see the truth." Is this the real Megan? Kida wondered, her analytical mind dissecting every word, every gesture. Or just another performance? "I've spent every day since then regretting what I did," Megan continued, her words tumbling out in a desperate rush. "I know I can never undo the pain I caused, but I had to come here, to tell you how sorry I am. To beg for your forgiveness, even if I don't deserve it." Ellie's expression remained unreadable, but inside, her emotions churned like a storm-tossed sea. Part of her yearned to embrace her sister, to mend the rift between them. But another part, hardened by betrayal, warned her to stay guarded. "Megan," Ellie said softly, her voice steady despite the turmoil within, "I hear your words. But trust... trust isn't something that can be fixed with an apology, no matter how heartfelt." "Please, El," Megan pleaded, her voice trembling. "I know I don't deserve it, but I need you to understand. I need you to see how sorry I am." "Tell me," Ellie continued, her voice steady despite the ache in her chest, "was it worth it? Betraying me, betraying the pack... did it finally make you feel like you were stepping out of my shadow?" Megan flinched as if struck, her grip on Ellie's hands loosening. "I... I thought it would," she admitted, her gaze dropping to the stone floor. Ellie nodded slowly, pieces falling into place. "And now?" "Now?" Megan's laugh was bitter, tinged with self-loathing. "Now I realize I threw away the one person who always believed in me, who always had my back. I let my jealousy destroy everything good in my life." As Megan's words hung in the air, Ellie found herself torn between sympathy and caution. She understood the roots of her sister's actions all too well, but understanding didn't erase the pain of betrayal. Ellie took a deep breath, the cool air of Krähenburg Castle's grand hall filling her lungs. The weight of her role as former Luna settled on her shoulders, reminding her of the duty she still felt towards her pack, her family – even those who had wronged her. Megan's face crumpled, her composure finally shattering. "Oh, Ellie," she choked out, her voice raw with emotion. "I'm so sorry. I never meant to hurt you like this. Please, please forgive me." Tears streamed down her cheeks as she reached out, her fingers trembling in the space between them. Ellie stood motionless, her heart pounding against her ribs. She watched her sister's breakdown with a mixture of sympathy and wariness, her intuition working overtime to decipher Megan's true intentions. The grand hall suddenly felt suffocating, the weight of their shared history pressing down on her. Is this real? Ellie wondered, studying Megan's anguished expression. Or just another act? Her mind raced, recalling countless moments when her impulsive sister had manipulated situations to her advantage. After a long moment, Ellie took a deep breath, decision crystallizing in her mind. "Megan," she said softly, reaching out to grasp her sister's hands. "I hear you. And... I forgive you." The words felt strange on her tongue, a bittersweet lie. Ellie mustered a small, tentative smile, hoping it masked the calculations whirring behind her eyes. Keep your enemies close, she reminded herself, and your potentially dangerous sister closer. "Really?" Megan gasped, hope blooming across her tear-stained face. "Oh, El, I promise I'll make it up to you. Things will be different now, you'll see." Ellie nodded, maintaining her facade of acceptance. "We'll take it one day at a time," she said, her tone measured. Inside, her mind was already racing ahead, plotting how to use this newfound closeness to uncover Megan's true motives and protect those she cared about. Megan's face transformed in an instant, joy radiating from her like sunlight breaking through storm clouds. She flung her arms around Ellie, pulling her into a tight embrace. "Thank you, thank you!" she exclaimed, her voice muffled against Ellie's shoulder. Ellie stiffened for a moment, caught off guard by the sudden display of affection. She slowly raised her arms to return the hug, her movements mechanical. Too quick, she thought, her suspicions deepening. She's relieved, not remorseful. "I've missed you so much, El," Megan whispered, her grip tightening. Ellie closed her eyes, allowing the embrace but feeling a world away. Her mind raced, conjuring images of the challenges that lay ahead. The grand hall of Krähenburg Castle seemed to fade around her, replaced by a tapestry of potential futures. "I've missed you too," Ellie replied softly, the half-truth tasting bitter on her tongue. She pulled back slightly, meeting Megan's gaze. "But we have a lot to work through. This isn't going to be easy." Megan nodded eagerly, her eyes bright. "I know, I know. But we're sisters. We can do anything together, right?" Ellie managed a small smile, even as her heart clenched. One step at a time, she reminded herself. Focus on now. Unravel the rest later. "Right," she agreed, her voice steady despite the turmoil within. "Together." As Megan finally released her grip, Ellie took a step back, her keen eyes scanning her sister's face. The familiar features were alight with relief, but something lurked behind that joyful facade—a flicker of... what? Anxiety? Guilt? Ellie couldn't quite place it, but her instincts screamed that there was more to uncover.
