I am the heiress to a multi-billion-dollar trust fund and Asher Sterling’s fiancée. For years, everyone assumed I would stand quietly behind the empire he inherited. Then my illegitimate half-sister appeared. One by one, Asher handed her the privileges and protection meant for me. At our engagement party, he gives her our penthouse and demands that I sign over access to my trust. I let him finish. Then I take my billions to the one man he fears most.

Chapter 1 The Broken Promise
The crystal chandelier scattered light over the grand ballroom. Every chair faced the stage, where Asher Sterling stood with one arm around my half-sister, Chloe. Chloe cried into a lace handkerchief. She had learned how far tears could carry her in this family. “Serena has always been generous,” Asher announced through the speakers. He used the warm, patient tone he saved for promises made with my money. “She understands that family is about what you give. Chloe has been through enough. She deserves somewhere safe to rebuild her life.” He found me in the front row and held my gaze. That was my cue to smile and nod. “So Serena has agreed to give Chloe the keys to our penthouse. She will also add Chloe as a signatory on the Vance Trust, ensuring her financial security.” Conversation stirred around me. Several members of my board turned in their seats. The penthouse was mine. So was the trust. Asher had just given both away before asking me. One of his sapphire cufflinks hung open. I had bought the pair for his birthday. His thumb worried the loose clasp while his eyes searched the front row for help. For ten years, I had fixed his tie, straightened his collar, and caught every small mistake before anyone else saw it. Even now, he expected me to walk up and fix him. Chloe raised a silver key fob for the cameras. On a rainy Tuesday, Asher had pressed that same key into my palm and talked about children laughing across the marble floors. Now it swung from Chloe’s fingers while she dabbed at her eyes. In my first life, I had shouted until my throat gave out. I had begged him to remember every promise he had made. Years later, I died alone in a cold hospital room while my fortune paid for their life together. I pushed back my chair and stood. The ballroom went quiet. Asher’s smile tightened. He could tolerate a private argument; a public one was harder to contain. I walked onto the stage and stopped beside the lectern. The microphone was still live. “You’re right,” I said. “Chloe should have it all.” Relief moved through the Sterling side of the room. Asher dropped his hand from the cufflink. “She can have the penthouse. She can have the signature rights to the trust.” I looked at the Vance board members, then back at him. “As of tonight, she can have you too.” The music stopped. “I am canceling our engagement.” Asher stared at me. “Serena, stop. This is no time for your theatrics.” “The timing is perfect. We all heard the new arrangement.” He reached for my arm, but I stepped away and looked toward an alcove at the back of the ballroom. Julian Sterling stood there with a whiskey in his hand. He was Asher’s older brother, exiled by their father for being too ambitious and too ruthless. Asher feared him enough to avoid speaking his name. Julian had no invitation to the party. I had still expected him to come. He watched me cross the room without moving from the wall. His expression held no sympathy. He was already calculating what my decision might be worth. Behind me, Asher hissed my name. I kept walking. Guests shifted out of my path, and their phones followed. I stopped in front of Julian. “They say you can turn a hundred-dollar investment into a million overnight.” His mouth twitched. “I’ve done it with less.” “Good.” I offered my hand. “I have a multi-billion-dollar investment for you. I provide the capital.” “You take back the Sterling empire and crush Asher. In return, you become my partner and my enforcer.” Julian studied my face, then glanced at the stage where Asher stood beside Chloe. “What makes you think I’m the man for the job?” “You’re the only person in this room who hates him as much as I do.”
