18th Birthday
My friends had thrown me a surprise birthday party. I never enjoyed my birthdays but I always put up a happy face. It wasn’t their fault I felt like a failure. But every year on the day of my birth I was reminded of it. Every year they got me books of the ancient history or the fundamentals of magic and every year it reminds me of the fact that I couldn’t study anything else than just that. I was born incapable of using any sort of magic. I always let them believe I loved the books, that the history of our people was way more interesting than they thought.
Truth however is that I hate it probably more than they do. It’s endless pages of powerful mages, dragons, elf’s and how magic makes us stronger. I let them believe I love it so they would not worry about me, I mean there is nothing they can do anyway. I’m a failure of my people and that’s something I’ve learned to except.
“Ey Iris open my present next” Maya excitingly skipped over to me with a present that could only be one thing, another book. I open it with a fake excitement and indeed it’s what I thought it would be.
“Thanks, it’s perfect!” I say with a smile. I was thankful for all the gifts but ones I’d like to get something not related to magic.
“Read the title” she couldn’t contain her excitement.
“The legend of the dragon flame” I read out loud to my surprise.
“I know you don’t believe in legends but this one is actually based on an ancient scroll. No one has ever proven the story to be true or false so I think you might find it interesting.” And I did, it was different. Not a reminder of what I can’t do but a fiction on what could be true.
“I love it” I answer honestly. This made her light up even more.
“Great” she clapped her hands together and turned to the rest of the group. “Now let’s party! We got booze and no parents around” she yelled and turned the music to the max. The living room had been soundproofed by magic so we could party without disturbing anyone.
I watched the crowd for awhile until I finished my drink giving me an excuse to leave for the kitchen.
“Hey Rowen” he had never been much for crowds so I wasn’t surprised to see him here.
“Oh hi” he choked on his drink. “I didn’t see you” he said with a smile.
“What are you doing drinking alone in the kitchen?” I asked him.
“Just getting myself some liquid courage before I get out there again” he chuckled.
“Wait, are you going to do it tonight?” I asked him.
“Do what?” He looked away evading my eyes.
“You know what I’m talking about. Are you finally going to ask him out?” He looked back at me and thought for awhile.
“Probably not, I’m probably just going to chicken out. I mean I’m not even sure if he likes guys.” He looked down.
“You know he does. He even had a freaking coming out party” I knew he wasn’t really worried about that he was just insecure if he the bookworm would have a chance with him.
“I don’t know” he really needs a friendly push.
“You know what?” I gave him a mischievous smile.
“What?” He looked up.
“Vodka” I said taking down a bottle I had stored for the right opportunity. “Enchanted vodka. All the good stuff with non of the bad”. He looked at me surprised.
“Where did you get it?”
“Doesn’t matter” I pored two big shot glasses full of it and gave one to him.
A couple of shots later we where both laughing and talking about the best way for him to approach Dewin.
“Oh I almost forgot. I haven’t given you your present yet. It felt a bit to crowded there earlier so I missed my chance.” He handed me a small neatly folded present.
“What is it?” I asked surprised.
“Well it’s not a book. I mean I love a good book as much as the next guy but there is no way you can read that many books until you next birthday.” He wasn’t wrong.
The present contained a necklace in the shape of a beautiful flower in silver. “It’s beautiful” I whisper. It looked just like the flower marking between my collarbones.
“I know you’re not a fan of your mark but I want you to have a reminder of how beautiful you look in it”. He gave me the most adorable smile.
“Thank you, I don’t know what to say” I was speechless it was probably the best gift I’d gotten in years.
“No problem, now where exactly did Dewin go?” He looked over to the living room scouting for his crush.
The rest of the evening was really pleasant. I enjoyed myself and Rowen seemed to finally be talking to Dewin, even Maya noticed it.
“He finally did it! Tell me, did you use the vodka I brought you”.
“I might have”. I answered with a laugh.
The evening really was a success but than again all of Maya’s party’s where. But than when everyone except for her had left the house something happened. Something that would change my life for the better or worse.
