Chapter 1: Live
"Say hi, guys!" I lifted my phone up as I walked through the tunnel. Three thousand people were already watching.
"I'm about to surprise my boyfriend before his game. Wish me luck!"
Hearts and fire emojis filled the screen. Someone typed, ‘he's so lucky.’
I smiled at that. For one more second, I actually believed it.
I turned the corner toward the locker rooms, still holding the phone up, still smiling for an audience I had almost forgotten was real.
Then I saw him.
Derek was pressed against the wall with his hands buried in someone's hair. Bianca's hair.
My stomach dropped before my brain could catch up. Her fingers were curled into the back of his jersey, the one with VANCE printed across the shoulders. He was kissing her like it wasn't the first time. Like he knew exactly how she liked it.
I froze. My phone stayed pointed straight at them.
The comments exploded.
‘OH MY GOD.’
‘IS THIS LIVE?!’
‘SIS RUN.’
Derek's eyes flicked toward the small red light on my screen.
"Nora…"
I didn't wait to hear my name in his mouth. I ended the stream and ran.
I didn't know where I was going. I just needed to be somewhere else. My shoes hit the floor hard, my chest felt tight, and I turned a corner too fast and crashed straight into someone.
A pair of steady hands caught my shoulders before I could fall.
I looked up.
It was Sawyer Kane, Derek's biggest rival in the league. Tall, calm, and dangerous on the ice. He stood there in his away jersey, stick still in one hand, staring down at me like I had just interrupted something important.
I probably had.
"I'm sorry," I said, breathless. "I didn't see you…"
"I saw everything." His voice stayed even, like he was simply stating a fact. "You went live. It's already been clipped and shared."
My whole body went cold. "What?"
"Give it ten minutes," he said. "Every hockey account online will have it by then."
I covered my mouth with my hand as the tears started. I hated that he was watching this happen. I hated that out of everyone in the building, it was him I had run into.
"I need to go," I said. "I need to delete it, call someone, I don't know…"
"Nora."
I stopped moving. I hadn't realized he even knew my name.
He crouched slightly so he wasn't towering over me anymore. There was no smirk on his face, no trace of ‘I told you he was trash.’ Just something calm and steady, completely different from what I had just watched Derek do to me in front of thousands of strangers.
"You don't owe him ten minutes of dignity," he said. "Let the whole world see exactly who he is."
"You hate him," I whispered. "This benefits you."
His jaw tightened slightly. "This isn't about hockey."
Footsteps echoed down the tunnel behind us. Derek's voice followed, sharp and panicked, calling my name like he still believed he had any right to.
Sawyer's gaze shifted past my shoulder, and his expression hardened.
"Nora!" Derek was closer now. "Baby, wait, let me explain…"
Sawyer straightened to his full height beside me. He wasn't looking at me anymore. He was looking directly at Derek.
"She isn't going anywhere with you," Sawyer said, his voice low and certain, as if he had already decided how this would end.
Derek's face flushed red. "This isn't your business, Kane."
"It is now," Sawyer said without blinking.
Derek stopped a few feet away, chest heaving, his eyes darting between me and my phone as if he could still fix everything with the right words. "Nora, it's not what it looked like."
"It's exactly what it looked like." My voice cracked, but I forced the words out anyway. "I saw it. Everyone saw it."
"Turn the phone off. Delete the post. I'll call our PR team and we can control the story…"
"Control it?" I let out a bitter laugh. "You want to control the fact that you were kissing Bianca against a wall?"
Bianca stepped up behind him, arms crossed, completely unbothered. She looked at me the way she always did, like I was something she had simply stepped over on her way to something better.
"Nora, don't make a scene," she said flatly. "It's not that serious."
Sawyer moved half a step in front of me, not to block me, but simply to be there.
"You should leave," he told Derek quietly. Quiet was somehow worse than shouting. "Before this gets even worse for you."
"Worse how?" Derek snapped. "Are you going to hit me, Kane?"
"No," Sawyer said, his eyes never leaving Derek's. "I don't need to. You already destroyed yourself. On camera."
For a moment, no one spoke. Down the hallway, I could hear the crowd beginning to chant, waiting for a game that suddenly felt very far away.
Derek looked at me one last time, and for a second I saw something that wasn't fear of losing me. It was fear of losing his image, his sponsors, his perfect reputation.
"This isn't over," he muttered before walking away with Bianca trailing behind him, already checking her phone.
The moment they disappeared, my legs gave out slightly. Sawyer's hand was already back on my shoulder, steadying me before I could fall.
"Breathe," he said gently. "You're okay."
"I'm not okay," I whispered. "Everyone just saw that."
"They saw him," Sawyer said. "Not you. There's a difference."
I looked up at him, this man who was supposed to be my boyfriend's rival, who had just stood between me and the wreckage of my own life like it cost him nothing.
"Why did you help me?" I asked.
He studied me for a moment, as if deciding how honest to be.
"Because I've wanted a reason to since preseason," he said simply.
My heart, already cracked open from everything else tonight, did something unfamiliar.
Behind us, the arena roared to life. The game was starting without either of us.
Sawyer glanced toward the ice, then back at me, and for the first time all night, the corner of his mouth lifted.
"Come on," he said, holding out his hand. "Let's give them something better to talk about.”
