CHAPTER 8

The rain had stopped by the time Lily stepped out of the library, but the sidewalks were still wet, reflecting the golden glow of the evening sun. Students were already making their way home, chatting about homework and the weekend ahead. Lily walked slowly toward the school gate, her phone still tucked tightly inside her bag. She couldn't stop thinking about the message. «You can't keep running forever. We'll meet again soon.» Who had sent it? Why now? She had changed schools to leave all of that behind. She had hoped the distance would be enough. Apparently, it wasn't. "Lily!" She turned at the sound of her name. Ethan jogged toward her, his basketball bag hanging over one shoulder. "I thought you'd already left." "I stayed in the library a little longer." "Finished the history project?" She nodded. "Almost." He noticed she wasn't smiling. "You okay?" For a brief moment, Lily considered telling him everything. The rumors. Her old school. The mysterious messages. But the words refused to come. Instead, she smiled gently. "I'm just tired." Ethan wasn't convinced, but he respected her answer. "My bus is running late," he said. "Want to wait together?" "I'd like that." They sat on a bench near the front gate while the evening breeze rustled the trees lining the street. For several minutes, they simply watched students leave campus. "You know," Ethan said at last, "when you first arrived, I thought you didn't like anyone." Lily looked at him in surprise. "Really?" "You were so quiet." She laughed softly. "I was terrified." "You hid it well." "I've had a lot of practice." Ethan frowned slightly. "That doesn't sound like a good thing." "It isn't." She looked toward the sky, where the clouds were beginning to break apart. "When you move somewhere new..." She paused. "...you wonder if people will accept you before they even know your name." Ethan thought about her words. "I'm glad you came here." Lily looked at him. "You are?" "Yeah." "The school would have been a lot quieter without you." She smiled. "And the garden wouldn't look nearly as nice." Lily laughed. "I'll accept that compliment." For the first time that day, the worry in her heart eased. Maybe only a little. But enough. --- The next morning, Maple Ridge High was buzzing with excitement. The principal had called a short assembly. Students gathered in the auditorium, whispering to one another as teachers organized the rows. Principal Harrison stepped onto the stage. "Good morning, everyone." "Good morning," the students replied. "As many of you know, the Autumn Festival is only two weeks away. Your teachers have told me how much effort you've all been putting into your projects." The audience applauded. "I also have another announcement." The room quieted. "Beginning next week, Maple Ridge High will welcome another transfer student." Whispers spread instantly. "Another one?" "I wonder if it's a boy." "Maybe they're joining our class." Ethan glanced toward Lily. She remained calm, but he noticed her fingers tightening around the edge of her seat. Why did she suddenly look nervous? --- After the assembly, students flooded back into the hallways. Noah caught up with Ethan. "Think the new student will end up in our class?" "Maybe." "I hope they're interesting." As they talked, Lily quietly walked ahead. She couldn't explain the uneasy feeling growing inside her. Another transfer student. It shouldn't matter. Hundreds of students changed schools every year. So why couldn't she shake the feeling that this announcement had something to do with the text message? She reached into her pocket. The message was still there. She had almost deleted it. Almost. --- That afternoon, the history presentations began. Each group took turns presenting stories about Maple Ridge and the town's history. When it was Ethan and Lily's turn, they walked confidently to the front of the classroom. Their presentation included old photographs, interviews with retired teachers, and even a short timeline Noah had designed. When they finished, the class applauded enthusiastically. Mrs. Carter smiled proudly. "Excellent work." "You worked together very well." As they returned to their seats, Noah whispered, "We're definitely getting an A." Ethan laughed. "Let's not celebrate too early." Lily smiled quietly. It felt good to accomplish something together. For a moment, everything seemed normal again. --- After school, Ethan visited the restored garden one last time before heading home. He found Lily sitting beneath the cherry tree, watching a few pink petals drift through the air. "Mind if I sit here?" "Not at all." He sat beside her. Neither of them spoke immediately. Sometimes silence said enough. Finally Ethan looked toward the flowers. "You know..." "Hm?" "I think this garden became my favorite place at school." Lily smiled. "Mine too." "Maybe because we built it together." She nodded. "Maybe." The wind carried another shower of petals across the pathway. Lily watched them carefully. "I used to think starting over meant forgetting everything." "And now?" "I think..." She smiled gently. "...it means finding people who help you keep moving forward." Ethan didn't know how to respond. Those words stayed with him long after they left the garden. Neither of them noticed the black car parked across the street from the school. Inside, a teenage boy watched the campus through the window. His gaze stopped on Lily. "So..." he murmured quietly, "You really did find a new place." He closed a folder resting on the passenger seat. On its cover was a single photograph. It showed Lily in the uniform of her previous school. Beneath the picture, one sentence had been written in blue ink. Lily Anderson – Transfer Request Approved. The boy smiled faintly. "See you soon." Far away, thunder rumbled across the evening sky. A new chapter in Lily's past was about to arrive at Maple Ridge High. And this time... Running away would no longer be an option.
