CHAPTER 1
The Transfer Student Chapter 1: The New Face in Class The first day of the new school term always felt the same at Maple Ridge High School. Students hurried through the front gates with backpacks slung over their shoulders, chatting excitedly about holidays that had ended too quickly. Some reunited with friends they hadn't seen for weeks, while others silently wished the semester would somehow disappear before the first bell rang. Ethan Brooks leaned against the hallway lockers, scrolling through his phone while pretending not to notice the growing crowd. He wasn't unpopular, but he wasn't the kind of student who loved attention either. He preferred a quiet life—good grades, basketball practice after school, and spending weekends playing video games with his best friend, Noah. "You know we're going to be late if you keep standing there," Noah said, nudging him. "I'm moving." "You've been saying that for five minutes." Ethan laughed before slipping his phone into his pocket. Inside Room 203, students settled into their seats while conversations buzzed around the classroom. Their homeroom teacher, Mrs. Carter, walked in carrying a stack of papers. "Good morning, everyone." "Good morning, Mrs. Carter," the class answered. "I hope you all had a wonderful break. Before we begin today's lessons, I'd like everyone to welcome a new student." The room immediately fell silent. Every pair of eyes turned toward the classroom door. A girl stepped inside quietly. She wore the same school uniform as everyone else, though it still looked brand new. Her dark hair rested neatly over her shoulders, and she carried her books carefully against her chest. There was nothing flashy about her appearance, yet something about her calm expression drew everyone's attention. "This is Lily Anderson," Mrs. Carter said with a warm smile. "She transferred here during the break. Please make her feel welcome." "Hello," Lily said softly. Her voice was gentle, but confident enough to be heard throughout the room. Mrs. Carter looked around. "The only empty seat is next to Ethan." Several classmates turned toward him. Noah smirked from across the room. "Lucky you." Ethan rolled his eyes. Lily walked over and sat beside him. "Hi," Ethan said politely. "Hi." "I'm Ethan." "I know. The teacher mentioned your name." He chuckled awkwardly. "Right... I guess she did." For the rest of the morning, Lily hardly spoke. She paid close attention to every lesson, taking neat notes while answering questions whenever the teacher called on her. During mathematics, she solved a difficult equation that left several students confused. Even Mrs. Carter seemed impressed. "Excellent work." Whispers spread through the classroom. "She's really smart." "I thought transfer students usually struggle." "She solved that faster than anyone." At lunch, Lily carried her tray to an empty table. Most students watched her from a distance, unsure whether to approach. Ethan hesitated. "You should invite her," Noah whispered. "Why me?" "Because she's sitting next to you." "That's not a reason." "It is today." After a deep breath, Ethan walked over. "Mind if I sit here?" Lily looked surprised. "Of course." A few moments later, Noah joined them. "I'm Noah." "Lily." The conversation started awkwardly. "So... where did you transfer from?" Noah asked. "A town about three hours away." "Do you miss it?" "A little." She smiled faintly before looking down at her lunch. Ethan noticed that she answered every question politely but never shared more than necessary. It wasn't that she seemed unfriendly. She simply appeared cautious. When lunch ended, Lily thanked them before heading back to class. Noah watched her leave. "She's mysterious." "I think she's just shy." "Maybe." That afternoon, the principal announced the upcoming Autumn Festival, one of the school's biggest annual events. Students immediately began discussing class competitions, performances, and sports tournaments. Mrs. Carter clapped her hands. "We'll be organizing committees tomorrow." Excited chatter filled the room. Everyone seemed eager. Everyone except Lily. She stared out the classroom window, her smile fading for just a moment before returning as quickly as it had disappeared. Ethan noticed. He couldn't explain why, but he had the feeling that behind her quiet personality was a story she wasn't ready to tell. As the final bell rang, students rushed toward the exits. Lily packed her bag carefully. "See you tomorrow," Ethan said. She looked at him, genuinely smiling this time. "See you tomorrow." It was only a simple goodbye. Yet somehow, Ethan couldn't stop thinking about it during the walk home. He had no idea that meeting the transfer student would slowly change not only his school year—but also the lives of everyone around him.
