The garden felt strangely quiet after Ryan walked away.
Ethan remained standing beneath the cherry tree, staring at the path where both Lily and Ryan had disappeared. The gentle breeze carried pink petals through the air, but the peaceful scenery no longer matched the thoughts racing through his mind.
"She hasn't told you why she transferred."
Ryan's words echoed over and over.
Ethan knew Lily had a past she wasn't ready to talk about. From the day she arrived at Maple Ridge High, he had noticed the sadness hidden behind her gentle smile. He had chosen not to ask because he believed everyone deserved the chance to tell their story in their own time.
Now he wondered if that had been the right decision.
Noah's voice interrupted his thoughts.
"There you are!"
Ethan turned to see his best friend jogging toward the garden with his basketball tucked under one arm.
"I've been looking everywhere. Practice starts in ten minutes."
"I'm coming."
Noah looked around.
"Where's Lily?"
"She left."
"And the new guy?"
"He left too."
Noah studied Ethan's face.
"Something happened, didn't it?"
Ethan sighed.
"I think Ryan knows why Lily transferred here."
Noah frowned.
"So they really do know each other."
Ethan nodded slowly.
"But I don't know what happened between them."
Noah placed a hand on his friend's shoulder.
"Whatever it is, don't pressure her."
"I won't."
"If she wants you to know, she'll tell you."
Ethan managed a small smile.
"You're right."
The two boys headed toward the gym, but Ethan couldn't shake the uneasy feeling in his chest.
---
Meanwhile, Lily sat alone on the bus ride home.
She rested her forehead lightly against the window, watching buildings and trees blur together as the bus rolled through town.
She hadn't expected to see Ryan again.
Not here.
Not after everything that had happened.
Closing her eyes, she remembered her final day at Westbrook High.
Students whispering in the hallways.
Friends refusing to meet her eyes.
The feeling of walking through corridors where everyone seemed to believe a story that wasn't true.
She opened her eyes immediately, forcing the memory away.
"No," she whispered to herself.
"That part of my life is over."
But was it?
Her phone vibrated.
Her heart skipped a beat.
With trembling fingers, she reached into her bag.
This time, it wasn't another unknown number.
It was a message from her mother.
«How was school today? We're making your favorite pasta for dinner.»
Lily smiled with relief.
She quickly typed back.
«It was okay. I'll be home soon.»
Sometimes, ordinary messages meant more than people realized.
---
That evening, the Anderson family gathered around the dining table.
Lily's father noticed she was unusually quiet.
"Everything alright at school?"
She hesitated.
"There was another transfer student."
"Oh?"
"He came from my old school."
Her parents exchanged a quick glance.
Her mother gently asked,
"Ryan?"
Lily nodded.
A heavy silence settled over the room.
Finally, her father spoke.
"Did he bother you?"
"No."
"He just wanted to talk."
"And?"
"I walked away."
Her mother reached across the table and gently squeezed Lily's hand.
"You don't owe anyone a conversation before you're ready."
Lily looked down.
"I know."
"But seeing him brought everything back."
Her father sighed.
"We hoped changing schools would give you peace."
"It has."
She looked up and smiled faintly.
"I've made friends."
Her mother's face softened.
"Ethan?"
Lily's cheeks warmed slightly.
"And Noah."
Her father noticed the tiny blush but decided not to tease her.
"What matters," he said, "is that you finally have people who care about you."
Lily nodded.
She knew he was right.
---
The next morning, Ryan arrived at school earlier than everyone else.
He stood outside the classroom window, looking across the sports field.
He barely noticed the footsteps approaching.
"You must be Ryan."
He turned.
Mrs. Carter smiled politely.
"I hope you're settling in."
"I am. Thank you."
"You seem thoughtful this morning."
Ryan gave a small laugh.
"I guess I have a lot on my mind."
Mrs. Carter nodded kindly.
"Starting over isn't always easy."
Ryan looked toward the rising sun.
"No."
"It isn't."
---
During first period, the class was assigned partners for a literature discussion.
Mrs. Carter read through the list.
"Ethan and Noah."
The boys grinned.
"Lily and Olivia."
Both girls smiled politely.
"And Ryan..."
She glanced at her paper.
"...you'll work with Daniel."
Ryan nodded without complaint.
Throughout the lesson, Ethan couldn't help noticing that Ryan never once tried to interrupt Lily or force a conversation with her.
Instead, he quietly focused on his own assignment.
It confused him.
If Ryan had come here to cause trouble, why was he keeping his distance?
---
Lunch arrived.
The restored garden was filled with students enjoying the cool weather.
Lily and Olivia sat together beneath the cherry tree.
For a while, they discussed their literature assignment.
Eventually, Olivia asked carefully,
"Can I ask you something?"
"Of course."
"Ryan..."
Lily looked up.
"...did you know him before?"
Lily hesitated.
"Yes."
"You don't have to explain."
Olivia smiled gently.
"I was just wondering."
Lily appreciated that she hadn't pushed further.
"I'll tell you someday."
"When you're ready."
Lily smiled gratefully.
"Thank you."
Across the garden, Ethan watched the conversation from a distance.
He couldn't hear what they were saying.
But seeing Lily smile again eased some of the worry he had been carrying since yesterday.
---
As classes ended, students hurried toward the school gates.
Ryan packed his bag slowly.
Just as he stepped into the hallway, Ethan caught up with him.
"Ryan."
Ryan stopped.
"Can we talk?"
He nodded.
The two boys walked toward the quiet courtyard outside the gym.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Finally, Ethan broke the silence.
"You said yesterday that Lily hadn't told me why she transferred."
"I did."
"Why?"
Ryan looked at the ground.
"Because that's her story to tell."
Ethan frowned.
"Then why mention it at all?"
Ryan sighed.
"I wanted you to understand something."
"What?"
"Lily isn't the person people at my old school believed she was."
Ethan remained silent.
Ryan continued.
"She protected someone."
"What do you mean?"
"I can't say anymore."
Ryan shook his head slowly.
"If Lily wants you to know the truth, she'll tell you herself."
Before Ethan could ask another question, Ryan walked away.
Ethan watched him disappear down the corridor.
Instead of answering his questions...
Ryan had only created more.
Who had Lily protected?
What had really happened at Westbrook High?
And why did Ryan carry so much regret whenever he looked at her?
As the sun began setting over Maple Ridge High, Ethan realized one thing.
The mystery surrounding Lily wasn't getting smaller.
It was only beginning.
